Diagnosis of Obscure Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) is defined as gastrointestinal bleeding from a source that cannot be identified on upper orlower gastrointestinal endoscopy. OGIB is considered an important indication for capsule endoscopy (CE). CE is particularly useful forthe detection of vascular and small ulcerative lesions, conditions frequently associated with OGIB, particularly in Western countries. On the other hand, balloon enteroscopy (BE) can facilitate the diagnosis of lesions presenting with minimal changes of the mucosalsurface, such as submucosal tumors, and can be used not only for diagnosis, but also for treatment, including endoscopic hemostasis. In other words, the complementary use of both CE and BE enables OGIB to be more efficiently diagnosed and treated. However,rebleeding can occur even in patients with negative results of CE, and such patients require repeat CE or BE. It is essential to effectivelyuse both CE and BE based on a thorough understanding of the strong points and weak points of these procedures. Further advancesand developments in virtual endoscopy incorporating computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are expected in thefuture.

Resonant neutral particle emissions at the energies of 6–7eV were observed, as well as a rise towards zero-energy, which are typical electron-capture dissociation profiles. The presence of disulfide (S–S) bonds tends to enhance the resonant bump heights. Chemical nature of the amino-acid residues adjacent to cysteines appears to correlate with the bump strength. Molecular-dynamical simulations help clarify the role of molecular vibration modes in the electron-capture dissociation process.</P>
Growth of the substrate crystals for $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ thick films

The distribution coefficients of Ni and Zn to the Cu site in $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$(LCO) were investigated to determine the suitable solvent composition ofr crystal growth of $La_{2}{Cu}_{1-x}{M}_{x}{O}_{4}$(M=NI, Zn)(LCMO), and were found to be 4.2 for NI and 0.66 for Zn, respectively. Single crystals of LCO, and LCMO of high homogeneity were grown by traveling solvent floating zone technique using suitable solvents. NO diamagnetic signals were observed for all substituted crystals. This fact suggests that crystals of LCO partially substituted by Ni or Zn are useful as substrate crystals.
LPE growth of $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ single-crystalline films

$La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ single-crystalline films were prepared on bulk single crystals of Zn-doped $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ as the substrates by LPE technique using two deferent methods. When prepared using an alumina crucible in normal electrical furnace, the $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ films were contaminated with less than 3 at% aluminum from the alumina crucibles. Aluminum contamination either reduced or completely destroyed the superconductivity of the $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ films, For LPE growth by modified TSFZ method using an infrared heating furnace without crucibles, the $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ films of x=0.11 showed superconducting with $Tc_{onset}=36\;K$, which is 10 K higher than that in the $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ bulk single crystals.

Skeletal muscle is a major organ that is important for whole-body glucose metabolism. We found that when isolated rat epitrochlearis muscle was incubated with a Pu-erh tea hot-water extract (PTE) for 30 min, the rate of 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3MG) transport increased in the absence of insulin. This activation was associated with an increase in Ser473 phosphorylation of Akt, a signaling intermediary leading to insulin-dependent glucose transport, but not Tyr458 phosphorylation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase p85, an upstream molecule of Akt. PTE-stimulated 3MG transport was also not accompanied by Thr172 phosphorylation of the catalytic α-subunit of 5′-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Gallic acid, a water-soluble ingredient in Pu-erh tea, stimulated Akt phosphorylation, but not AMPK phosphorylation. These results suggest that Pu-erh tea potentially promotes skeletal muscle glucose transport at least in part by activating Akt.

Purpose: Promoter DNA methylation of various genes has been associated with metachronous gastric cancer (MGC). The cancer-specific methylation gene, cysteine dioxygenase type 1 (CDO1), has been implicated in the occurrence of residual gastric cancer. We evaluated whether DNA methylation of CDO1 could be a predictive biomarker of MGC using specimens of MGC developing on scars after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Materials and Methods: CDO1 methylation values (TaqMeth values) were compared between 33 patients with early gastric cancer (EGC) with no confirmed metachronous lesions at >3 years after ESD (non-MGC: nMGC group) and 11 patients with MGC developing on scars after ESD (MGCSE groups: EGC at the first ESD [MGCSE-1 group], EGC at the second ESD for treating MGC developing on scars after ESD [MGCSE-2 group]). Each EGC specimen was measured at five locations (at tumor [T] and the 4-point tumor-adjacent noncancerous mucosa [TAM]). Results: In the nMGC group, the TaqMeth values for T were significantly higher than that for TAM (P=0.0006). In the MGCSE groups, TAM (MGCSE-1) exhibited significantly higher TaqMeth values than TAM (nMGC) (P<0.0001) and TAM (MGCSE-2) (P=0.0041), suggesting that TAM (MGCSE-1) exhibited CDO1 hypermethylation similar to T (P=0.3638). The area under the curve for discriminating the highest TaqMeth value of TAM (MGCSE-1) from that of TAM (nMGC) was 0.81, and using the cut-off value of 43.4, CDO1 hypermethylation effectively enriched the MGCSE groups (P<0.0001). Conclusions: CDO1 hypermethylation has been implicated in the occurrence of MGC, suggesting its potential as a promising MGC predictor.

A novel Gram-negative, aerobic, moderate halophilic, and psychrotolerant bacterium, designated as strain H7T, was isolated from a hypersaline lake located in Skarvsnes, Antarctica. Cells were filaments with varying lengths. Coccoid bodies developed in old cultures. Growth occurred with 0.5-15% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 5.8-7.0%), at pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0-8.0), and at 10-28°C (optimum, 25°C). The strain had a G+C content of 34.9 mol%, which is within the range of 32-36 mol% reported for the genus Psychroflexus. Chemotaxonomic data (major respiratory quinone: MK-6; major fatty acids: aC15:0, iC16:0 3-OH, and aC15: 1 A) supported the classification of strain H7T within the genus Psychroflexus. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain H7T should be assigned to the genus Psychroflexus and has a homology with Psychroflexus salinarum (98.2%), P. sediminis (96.1%), P. torquis (95.2%), P. tropicus (95.8%), and P. gondwanense (92.2%). Strain H7 is not identified as P. salinarum because that DNA-DNA hybridization data were 8.5% between strain H7T and P. salinarum. The combination of phylogenetic analysis, DNA-DNA hybridization data, phenotypic characteristics, and chemotaxonomic differences supported the view that strain H7T represents a novel species of the genus Psychroflexus. The name Psychroflexus lacisalsi is proposed,and the type strain is H7T (=JCM 16231T =KACC 14089T).
DOUBLE PEAKED OUTBURSTS OF THE BLAZAR OJ 287 IN 1994 - 1996

VRI bands CCD photometric observations of the BL Lac object OJ 287 have been carried out during the period from October, 1994 to May, 1996. OJ 287 underwent two major outbursts during our observations. The first peak (V14.0 mag.) occurred in the first half of November, 1994 and faded out to 16.5 mag within 150 days. The second peak (14.0 mag.) was observed in late December, 1995. The latter peak continued at nearly the same brightness until May, 1996. Such a long lasting outburst has never been reported for OJ 287. Color indices (V - R and V-I) remained nearly constant during the outbursts.
