      • Single-Port Robotic Cholecystectomy: Early Experience from 8 Cases

( Hyung Jun Kwon ),( Horyon Kong ),( Sang Geol Kim ),( Yun Jin Hwang ) 대한간학회 2017 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2017 No.1

Aims: Single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SPLC) is a technical concept to reduced pain and improve cosmetic results when compared to multi-port cholecystectomy. However, SPLC is associated with technical limitation due to the enhanced complexity of the approach and limited number of specialized instruments or platforms. On the other hand, using a robotic platform may overcome these problems and enable more precise surgical actions by increasing freedom of movement and by restoring intuitive instrument control. In this presentation, we report the early clinical experience of our first 8 sing-port robotic cholecystectomy (SPRC) cases. Methods: Between November 2016 and February 2017, eight patients underwent SPRC with the da Vinci Xi robot and single-site instrumentation. We retrospectively reviewed clinical data on those patients. Results: All of 8 patients had completion of SPRC. Seven patients were female and one was male. Average patient age was 43.3±11.8 years and BMI was 22.4±1.4 kg/m2. Three patients (37.5%) were diagnosed with chronic calculous cholecystitis. Three patients (37.5%) underwent operation for polypoid lesions of the gallbladder. One patient (12.5%) was diagnosed with acute calculous cholecystitis. The mean operation time (skin-to-skin) was 83.9±30.7 min, docking time was 13.25±8.1 min, and console time was 42.1±26.4 min. The intraoperative blood loss was negligible. The mean Visual Analog Pain Scale score 6hr after the surgery was 2.9±0.4. The mean length of hospital stay average postoperative hospital stay was 2.3±1.0 day. There were no intraoperative complication and one patient developed seroma on port site. Conclusions: Robotic single-port cholecystectomy appears feasible and safe in our early experience.

Effect of hemin and ascorbic acid on colonic pre-neoplastic lesions induced by azoxymethane in mice

        Jun Ho Kim,Tae Ryong Kim,Hyo Suk Choi,Sung June Kim,Jae Hwang Jeong,Sang Yoon Nam,Young Won Yun,Beom Jun Lee 한국예방수의학회 2017 예방수의학회지 Vol.41 No.4

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most prevalent cancer in the world, and heme iron is known to promote the CRC in an animal model. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of ascorbic acid in the presence of hemin on the formation of pre-neoplastic lesions induced by azoxymethane (AOM)/disodium sulfate (DSS) in mice. After acclimation for 1 week, five-week old mice received three s.c. injections (0-2 weeks of the experiment) of AOM [10 mg/kg body weight (BW)] weekly and were treated with 2% DSS in drinking water for the next week to induce aberrant crypt foci (ACF). All animals were fed the AIN-76A purified rodent diet for experimental period of 6 weeks. Experimental groups were then divided into three groups: carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) alone (control), CMC + Hemin, CMC + Hemin + ascorbic acid (AA). The CMC was used as a solvent for hemin. The daily doses were 534 mg/kg BW hemin and 246 mg/kg BW ascorbic acid administered orally. After the colonic mucosa were stained with methylene blue, aberrant crypt foci (ACF), aberrant crypt (AC) and polyps were counted. Lipid peroxidation in liver was evaluated by the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) assay. The numbers of ACF, AC and large ACF (≥4 AC/ACF) per colon increased in the hemin group compared to the control group, while they decreased significantly in the hemin + ascorbic acid group compared to the control group or hemin group (p<0.01). The number of polyps/colon in the hemin + AA group was significantly decreased compared to the hemin group (p<0.05). In the liver, the TBARS value of the hemin group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p<0.01). Additionally, the TBARS value of the hemin + AA group decreased slightly compared to that of the hemin group. Taken together, these results suggest that hemin can promote colon carcinogenesis in a mouse model and that ascorbic acid has a protective effect against hemin-promoted colon carcinogenesis.

      • Antidiabetic Effect of Fresh Nopal ( <i>Opuntia ficus-indica</i> ) in Low-Dose Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet

Hwang, Seung Hwan,Kang, Il-Jun,Lim, Soon Sung Hindawi Publishing Corporation 2017 Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medic Vol.2017 No.-

<P>The objective of the present study was to evaluate <I>α</I>-glucosidase inhibitory and antidiabetic effects of Nopal water extract (NPWE) and Nopal dry power (NADP) in low-dose streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced diabetic rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). The type 2 diabetic rat model was induced by HFD and low-dose STZ. The rats were divided into four groups as follows: (1) nondiabetic rats fed a regular diet (RD-Control); (2) low-dose STZ-induced diabetic rats fed HFD (HF-STZ-Control); (3) low-dose STZ-induced diabetic rats fed HFD and supplemented with NPWE (100 mg/kg body weight, HF-STZ-NPWE); and (4) low-dose STZ-induced diabetic rats fed HFD and supplemented with comparison medication (rosiglitazone, 10 mg/kg, body weight, HF-STZ-Rosiglitazone). In results, NPWE and NADP had IC50 values of 67.33 and 86.68 <I>μ</I>g/mL, both of which exhibit inhibitory activities but lower than that of acarbose (38.05 <I>μ</I>g/mL) while NPWE group significantly decreased blood glucose levels compared to control and NPDP group on glucose tolerance in the high-fat diet fed rats model (<I>P</I> < 0.05). Also, the blood glucose levels of HR-STZ-NPWE group were significantly lower (<I>P</I> < 0.05) than HR-STZ-Control group on low-dose STZ-induced diabetic rats fed HFD. Based on these findings, we suggested that NPWE could be considered for the prevention and/or treatment of blood glucose and a potential use as a dietary supplement.</P>

      • Role of Electronic Perturbation in Stability and Activity of Pt-Based Alloy Nanocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction

        Hwang, Seung Jun,Kim, Soo-Kil,Lee, June-Gunn,Lee, Seung-Cheol,Jang, Jong Hyun,Kim, Pil,Lim, Tae-Hoon,Sung, Yung-Eun,Yoo, Sung Jong American Chemical Society 2012 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.134 No.48

<P>The design of electrocatalysts for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells must satsify two equally important fundamental principles: optimization of electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability in acid media (pH <1) at high potential (0.8 V). We report here a solution-based approach to the preparation of Pt-based alloy with early transition metals and realistic parameters for the stability and activity of Pt(3)M (M = Y, Zr, Ti, Ni, and Co) nanocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The enhanced stability and activity of Pt-based alloy nanocatalysts in ORR and the relationship between electronic structure modification and stability were studied by experiment and DFT calculations. Stability correlates with the d-band fillings and the heat of alloy formation of Pt(3)M alloys, which in turn depends on the degree of the electronic perturbation due to alloying. This concept provides realistic parameters for rational catalyst design in Pt-based alloy systems.</P>

Plasmon-Enhanced Ultraviolet Photoluminescence from Hybrid Structures of Graphene/ZnO Films

        Hwang, Sung Won,Shin, Dong Hee,Kim, Chang Oh,Hong, Seung Hui,Kim, Min Choul,Kim, Jungkil,Lim, Keun Yong,Kim, Sung,Choi, Suk-Ho,Ahn, Kwang Jun,Kim, Gunn,Sim, Sung Hyun,Hong, Byung Hee American Physical Society 2010 Physical Review Letters Vol.105 No.12

<P>We report substantially enhanced photoluminescence (PL) from hybrid structures of graphene/ZnO films at a band gap energy of ZnO (??.3??eV/376??nm). Despite the well-known constant optical conductivity of graphene in the visible-frequency regime, its abnormally strong absorption in the violet-frequency region has recently been reported. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the resonant excitation of graphene plasmon is responsible for such absorption and eventually contributes to enhanced photoemission from structures of graphene/ZnO films when the corrugation of the ZnO surface modulates photons emitted from ZnO to fulfill the dispersion relation of graphene plasmon. These arguments are strongly supported by PL enhancements depending on the spacer thickness, measurement temperature, and annealing temperature, and the micro-PL mapping images obtained from separate graphene layers on ZnO films.</P>

        Hwang, Jun-Mo,Kim, Dong-Won,Lee, Sung-Yeal,Kim, Il-Man,Lee, Chang-Young,Yim, Man-Bin,Son, Eun-Ik The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2005 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.37 No.3

Objective: Strategies for managing supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors(PNETs) in children include surgical resection, craniospinal irradiation and chemotherapy. This study is performed in order to compare the efficacy of various methods of treatment and to describe its optimal management. Methods: We have reviewed all medical records and pathology slides of six children(four males and two females) with supratentorial PNET from November, 1987 to May, 2003. The extent of resection was confirmed by computed tomography and magnetic resonance studies. Results: The patients were aged 1 to 13 years and treated postoperatively with/without adjuvant therapy. Tumor location included was four cortical, one gangliobasal, and one pineal region. The presenting symptoms and signs consisted of increased intracranial pressure and focal neurological deficits such as seizure and hemiparesis. The treatment consisted of surgical resection alone in one patient, postoperative radiotherapy in one patient, postoperative chemotherapy in one, and postoperative radiotherapy with chemotherapy in three. Five patients lived more than 12 months after diagnosis and one patient among them has been living more than 5 years after diagnosis. Conclusion: We can improve the survival and prognosis of supratentorial PNET patients by radical gross total resection of tumor followed by craniospinal irradiation and aggressive chemotherapy. First of all, gross total resection of tumor is the most important among many factors.

      • Multi-pulsed flash light sintering of copper nanoparticle pastes on silicon wafer for highly-conductive copper electrodes in crystalline silicon solar cells

        Hwang, Hyun-Jun,Kim, Dug-Joong,Jang, Yong-Rae,Hwang, Yeon-Taek,Jung, IL-Hyoung,Kim, Hak-Sung Elsevier 2018 APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE - Vol.462 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this work, ultra-high speed flash white light (FWL) sintering method of copper nanoparticle pastes on silicon wafer substrate, was developed to produce highly conductive and low-cost copper electrodes for crystalline silicon solar cells. FWL sintering of copper nanoparticles on silicon wafer substrate has been regarded to be very difficult, due to its high thermal conductivity (<I>k</I>) compared with that of polymer (PI and PET) substrates. To overcome this limitation, we applied multiple pulsed FWL to sinter copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) printed on silicon wafer. Furthermore, bimodal Cu NPs with different size were also applied to enhance the packing density of Cu films for highly conductive Cu electrodes. Finally, this work demonstrated that Cu NP-pastes are successfully sintered on crystalline silicon wafer substrate by multiple pulsed FWL irradiations.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A new way to fabricate Cu electrodes using flash white light is demonstrated. </LI> <LI> Flash white light sintering process is dramatically simple and high speed process. </LI> <LI> Multi-pulsed FWL sintering method was developed for crystalline Si solar cells. </LI> <LI> Artificial oxidation treatment improves the FWL sintering of Cu NPs on Si wafer. </LI> <LI> Highly conductive Cu films were successfully produced under ambient conditions. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>Scalable Flash White Light (FWL) sintering of copper nanoparticles on silicon wafer is used to create highly conductive electrodes for crystalline silicon solar cells. • New Records of Endocoelantheainea and Nynantheae (Anthozoa: Zoantharia: Actiniaria) from Korea

Hwang, Sung-Jin,Song, Jun-Im The Korean Society of Systematic Zoology 2010 Korean Journal of Systematic Zoology Special Issue Vol.26 No.3

Actiniarians were collected from the rocks and sand bed of Jejudo Island, Ulleungdo Island, and Wangdolcho in Korean waters from 2004 to 2009. They were classified as two species of two families belonging to the suborders Endocoelantheainea and Nynantheae. Especially, suborder Endocoelantheainea, with distinct development of mesenteries, was firstly added to Korean athenarian fauna with the species, Halcurias carlgreni McMurrich, 1901. Calliactis polypus (Forsk$\aa$l, 1775) showing the commensalism with hermit crab, was easily distinguished from C. japonica by external features and the composition of cnidae. These two species were described in detail with tables and figures.
