      • Building Mobile Agents’ Applications Fault Tolerant

        A mobile agent is self-governing software that has one or more goals and can migrate from one node to another in a network. Mobile agent has received pervasive interest in both research and academia in recent years because of its support for asynchronous and disconnected operation capability in distributed system Along with these affirmative sides, the full scale adoption of mobile agent has been delayed by several fault tolerance complexities in untrustworthy network environments such as Internet. This paper proposed a framework to provide fault tolerant execution to mobile agents. Key concepts used to accomplish this goal include the transaction manager concept, checkpointing, timeout mechanism. Agent saves partial results at home server. The framework can tolerate agent failure, server failure and communication delay. It has been implemented as an add-on to mobile agent platform called Aglets. Experiments have been conducted to test the feasibility and performance of the proposal.

      • Intra-Operative Frozen Sections: Experience at A Tertiary Care Centre

        The present study was conducted to assess error rates with diagnosis using intra-operative frozen sections, and to indicate ways to increase overall performance. Over a period of two years, 227 cases were biopsied intra-operatively. Errors were observed in 14 cases. Four of these were sampling errors, one by a pathologist and three by surgeons. In seven cases incorrect interpretations were made. Epithelial dysplasia was observed on definitive histology in two cases which was not reported intra-operatively. One case was of ectopic thyroid. In cases of oral cancer where sentinel lymph nodes were sampled, immunohistochemistry for cytokeratin was performed to facilitate identification of micrometastasis. Only single case displayed tumor deposits which was not evident morphologically. Resection margins were reported in seventy eight cases. Some 18% (14/50) benefited from revision of margins; overall sensitivity of intra-operative frozen sections for marginal status was 71.4%, with a specificity of 90.3%. Overall sensitivity was 75% and specificity was 97.5%. Careful observation, pathologist experience and knowledge of limitations help in improving the overall diagnostic outcome.

      • Bayesian analysis of a repairable system subject to overhauls with bounded failure intensity

        This paper deals with the Bayesian analysis of the failure data of a repairable mechanical system subject to minimal repairs and periodic overhauls. The effect of overhauls on the reliability of the system is modeled by a proportional age reduction model and the failure process between two successive overhauls is assumed to be 2-parameter Engelhardt-Bain process (2-EBP). Power Law Process (PLP) model has a disadvantage which 2-EBP can overcome. On the basis of the observed data and of a number of suitable prior densities, point and interval estimation of model parameters, as well as quantities of relevant interest are found. Also hypothesis tests on the effectiveness of performed overhauls have been developed using Bayes factor. Sensitivity analysis of improvement parameter is carried out. Finally, a numerical application is used to illustrate the proposed method.

        Unsafe Disposal of Child Faeces: A Community-based Study in a Rural Block in West Bengal, India

        Objectives: A clean India is the responsibility of all Indians. One of the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Initiative) is to bring about behavioural changes regarding healthy sanitation practices. While large-scale programs in India have increased latrine coverage, they have to some extent failed to bring behavioural changes ensuring optimal latrine use, including the safe disposal of child faeces, which is a significant source of exposure to faecal pathogens. Hence, this study was done to explore child faeces disposal practices in rural West Bengal and to elicit the determinants of unhygienic faeces disposal. Methods: Data collection was done using an interview method among the mothers of 502 under-5 children, following a pre-designed, semi-structured schedule during house-to-house visits in a set of villages in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. Results: The prevalence of unsafe disposal of child faeces was 72.4%, and maternal education, per capita income, and water source were found to be significantly associated with unsafe child faeces disposal. Conclusions: This study draws attention to the unsafe disposal of child faeces in this area of India and raises questions about the efficiency of sanitation campaigns in rural India that focus on expanding coverage rather than emphasizing behavioural changes, which are crucial to ensure the safe disposal of child faeces. Thus, it is urgently necessary to strengthen efforts focusing on behavioural changes regarding the safe disposal of child faeces in order to minimise adverse health outcomes.

        Right sided descending and sigmoid colon: its embryological basis and clinical implications

        Anatomical variations of the colon are described by various authors, but the occurrence of right sided descending and sigmoid colon is rare and has not been reported. We found that the anomalous right-sided descending and sigmoid colon had four parts. The proximal segment of the first part consisted of the descending colon extending across the midline from the splenic flexure to the portion supplied by the left colic artery. The distal segment was supplied by the superior sigmoid artery. The second and third parts formed a loop in the right lumbar region anterior to the lumbar cecum. The fourth part was in the lesser pelvis, extending from right sacroiliac joint to the third sacral body. Parts two, three, and four were supplied by the inferior sigmoid artery, which arose from the right side of the inferior mesenteric artery. The ascending and transverse colon was normally placed. This is a rare anomaly that has not been reported so far in adults and is of immense importance to interventional radiologists and colorectal surgeons. The embryological basis of such an anomaly is defective fixation occurring as early as the 12th-17th week of intrauterine life.

        Computation of design forces and deflection in skew-curved box-girder bridges

        The analysis of simply supported single-cell skew-curved reinforced concrete (RC) box-girder bridges is carried out using a finite element based CsiBridge software. The behaviour of skew-curved box-girder bridges can not be anticipated simply by superimposing the individual effects of skewness and curvature, so it becomes important to examine the behaviour of such bridges considering the combined effects of skewness and curvature. A comprehensive parametric study is performed wherein the combined influence of the skew and curve angles is considered to determine the maximum bending moment, maximum shear force, maximum torsional moment and maximum vertical deflection of the bridge girders. The skew angle is varied from 0° to 60° at an interval of 10°, and the curve angle is varied from 0° to 60° at an interval of 12°. The scantly available literature on such bridges focuses mainly on the analysis of skew-curved bridges under dead and point loads. But, the effects of actual loadings may be different, thus, it is considered in the present study. It is found that the performance of these bridges having more curvature can be improved by introducing the skewness. Finally, several equations are deduced in the non-dimensional form for estimating the forces and deflection in the girders of simply supported skew-curved RC box-girder bridges, based upon the results of the straight one. The developed equations may be helpful to the designers in proportioning, analysing, and designing such bridges, as the correlation coefficient is about 0.99.

        Irrigation Pipe Network Planning at Tertiary Level: An Indian Case Study

        Two-third of cultivated land in India is monsoon dependent, due to global warming and the El Niño and La Niña phenomenon, an uncertainty loom occurs around monsoon which necessitates more irrigation periods. The conventional method for conveying irrigation water from the source to field is through open canals in the country causing huge losses in percolation and evaporation. Thus, modern system of irrigation such as Pipe Distribution Network (PDN) is desired. An application of PDN on the Left Bank Canal (LBC) of the Pench Irrigation project at distributary/tertiary level, India is proposed in the present study with the aim to design the least cost irrigation network of optimum pipe diameters thereby reducing the losses caused by canal for effective utilization of available water. EPANET 2.0 is used as the design tool with pressure and velocity as constraints. The design is also carried out using Critical Path Method (CPM) and optimized using Linear Programming (LP). Network costs are compared for both the approaches. Sensitivity analysis is also carried out for checking pressure variations for different materials by Hazen Williams (HW) and Darcy Weisbach (DW) major friction head loss formulas with variation in Loss Coefficients (LC). Proposed designed pipe irrigation system indicates significant reduction in losses compared to traditional conveyance system and thus will be beneficial if adopted in practice to the Indian fields which will significantly contribute to efficient management of available water.

        Histopathologic Characteristics of Canine Desmoplastic Melanoma

        An 11-year-old castrated male miniature Schnauzer, weighing 8 kg, presented with multiple masses on the humeri. Grossly, the masses were separated from the surrounding soft tissues. Desmoplastic melanoma is an uncommon tumor in dogs. Fine-needle aspiration cytology showed large spindle-shaped cells with a high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio. Histopathology showed interlacing bundles of fibroblast-like cells, highly pleomorphic multinuclear cells, occasional atypical spindle cells separated by fibrocollagenous stroma, and lymphocyte aggregates admixed with abundant collagen. The tumors were diffusely positive for S100a, a strong marker for desmoplastic melanoma, and negative for desmin. Herein, we report the pathobiology of a rare, uncommon variant of melanoma in a dog.

        Lipomatosis: a diverse form of hemifacial hyperplasia

        A case of hemifacial hyperplasia that presented with muscular, skeletal, and dental hyperplasia along with lipomatous infiltration was described. Advanced imaging was useful in identifying the lipomatous infiltration present in the lesion, which raises the possibility of lipomatosis having a diverse presentation in hemifacial hyperplasia. As there was a scarcity of related literature in the field of dentomaxillofacial radiology, this report would make us familiar with its computed tomographic and magnetic resonance image findings.

        Quality of Chilled Ready-to-Bake Pizza Stored in Air and under Modified Atmospheres: Microbiological and Sensory Attributes

        Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) studies on microbiological and sensory analysis were conducted to extend the shelf life of ready-to-bake pizza stored at 7±1ºC. The gas combinations used were: atm1: air (control), atm2:CO_2 (100%), atm3: N_2 (100%), atm4: 50% CO_2/50% N2. Total plate count (TPC), yeasts/molds (Y/M), coliforms,lactic acid bacteria (LAB), psychrotrophs, and anaerobic spore formers were estimated at time intervals of 0, 5, 10,15, and 20 days. TPC and LAB of pizza samples (atm1)reached 7.10 and 8.14 log CFU/g after 10 days of storage,respectively. Coliforms, psychrotrophs, and Y/M were significantly higher (p<0.05) for pizza samples stored in atm1 than other storage conditions of MAP. Finally, counts of anaerobic spore formers were low (<3 log CFU/g)irrespective of the packaging conditions throughout the entire storage period. It was concluded that among the 4atmospheres examined, atm2 (100% CO_2) was the best,followed by atm4>atm3>atm1 respectively, in descending order. MAP conditions under this study may extend shelf life of pizza to considerable amount of time.
