Combatiendo en tierra de nadie: representación, pornografía y deseo en Mambrú, de R. H. Moreno Durán
Sebastian Patron Saade 서울대학교 라틴아메리카연구소 2019 이베로아메리카硏究 Vol.30 No.3
This article explores how in Mambrú the soldiers of the Colombian Battalion represent Korea as a blank slate––that is, as a place from which all specific cultural and geographic referents have been erased. To give meaning to this empty landscape, the soldiers fill in the blanks that the destruction of the war has left behind with comparisons to Colombia’s politics and geography, and to the body of the women the see and meet in Asia. Using these referents, the soldiers draw a symbolic map of their surroundings. This is a map that allows them to navigate through the Korean ruins, avoid the threat of castration, affirm their masculinity, and dominate the other both sexually and militarily.
Un rastro de sombras: deseo, cuerpos y memoria en Corazon tan blanco
( Sebastian Patron Saade ) 한국스페인어문학회(구 한국서어서문학회) 2017 스페인어문학 Vol.0 No.83
This article analyses how Corazon tan blanco, by the Spanish writer Javier Marias, exposes the importance of desire to articulate an open narrative about the past. Instead of arguing in favour of a transparent language to reconstruct the past, Marias`s narrator is conscious of the need to preserve what he terms areas of shadow inside his tale. Through his depiction of the male and female bodies of his story, his narrative introduces ambiguity and creates empty zones in which desire emerges. The parallels that the protagonist weaves between the bodies he describes are fundamental to create an alternative story in which the past loosens its grip on his life. After reaching a dead point in his life, the narrator realizes that the empty areas that the bodies produce prevent the past from becoming a mere anecdote and thus losing relevance, and for overcoming the traumatic irruption of the past into the present. The ambivalence these shadowy areas create is necessary to maintain the narrator`s ability to engage creatively with both his past and his future.
Antimicrobial Activity of Two Propolis Samples Against Human Campylobacter jejuni
Raffaella Campana,Vania Patrone,Ingrid Tarsilla Maria Franzini,Giuseppe Diamantini,Emanuela Vittoria,Wally Baffone 한국식품영양과학회 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.5
The aim of this study was to analyze the antimicrobial activity of two ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEPs) and selected flavonoids against 16 Campylobacter jejuni clinical isolates and several Gram-positive and Gram-negative human pathogens. The antimicrobial activity of EEPs and flavonoids was evaluated by the agar well diffusion method. The EEPs inhibited the growth of C. jejuni, Enterobacter faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus. The most active flavonoid was galangin, with the highest percentage of sensitivity among C. jejuni strains (68.8%); lower percentages of sensitivity were observed for quercetin (50%). The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of EEPs and flavonoids for C. jejuni isolates were determined by the agar dilution method. EEPs showed MIC values of 0.3125–0.156mg/mL for all C. jejuni strains; galangin and quercetin gave MICs ranging from 0.250 to 0.125mg/mL. Thus propolis preparations could be used as support to traditional therapy for Campylobacter infection, especially when the antibiotic agents show no activity against this microorganism.
Los Días de la Fiebre de Andrés Felipe Solano: De la Crisis Ontológica a la Realidad Cíborg
Gerardo Gomez Michel,Sebastian Patron Saade 한국라틴아메리카학회 2021 라틴아메리카연구 Vol.34 No.2
In Los días de la fiebre, the Colombian writer Andres Felipe Solano recounts his experience in South Korea during the first three months of the pandemic, in 2020. From February to April, Solano describes his personal feelings, as well as his impressions regarding the changes that viral pandemic has introduced in the habits of the inhabitants of this East Asian country. Like other contemporary writers and thinkers who have written about the pandemic and the new normality that it has ushered in, Solano’s narrator uses the current circumstances to reflect on the growing tension between the right to privacy and state intervention, the new challenges imposed by stricter social distancing and isolation rules, and the collapse of Korea’s consumer society, and the collapse of capitalism overall. Beyond these topics, however, Los días de la fiebre is a book in which Solano explores and erases the limits between mind, body and machines, and between living and inanimate beings underlining the risks of post-humanism and a cyborg reality . The virus’s constant threat and the technology deployed to facilitate its detection and prevent its spread lead Solano to modify his self-image and to question both the autonomy and rationality on which rest many of the fantasies of modern man’s domination, and the ontological hierarchies through which this subject has organized his surroundings which are now in crisis.

Summary

Attenuated strains of mycobacteria can be exploited to determine genes essential for their pathogenesis and persistence. To this goal, we sequenced the genome of H37Ra, an attenuated variant of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv strain. Comparison with H37Rv revealed three unique coding region polymorphisms. One polymorphism was located in the DNA-binding domain of the transcriptional regulator PhoP, causing the protein's diminished DNA-binding capacity. Temporal gene expression profiles showed that several genes with reduced expression in H37Ra were also repressed in an H37Rv phoP knockout strain. At later time points, genes of the dormancy regulon, typically expressed in a state of nonreplicating persistence, were upregulated in H37Ra. Complementation of H37Ra with H37Rv phoP partially restored its persistence in a murine macrophage infection model. Our approach demonstrates the feasibility of identifying minute but distinct differences between isogenic strains and illustrates the consequences of single point mutations on the survival stratagem of M. tuberculosis.
