        Eryngium carlinae Ethanol Extract Corrects Lipid Abnormalities in Wistar Rats with Experimental Diabetes

        Abnormalities in lipid metabolism, associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), frequently occur in people with diabetes. Eryngium carlinae is a plant used in traditional medicine to treat lipid abnormalities. The chemical composition and hypolipidemic activity of the ethanolic extract of E. carlinae were analyzed to broaden our knowledge of its mechanism of action. The ethanolic extract of E. carlinae was tested for hypolipidemic activity by oral administration for 40 days. Atorvastatin, a widely used statin, was also administered to compare its effect with that of the extract. Serum was used for analysis of the lipid profile and liver microsomes to assess 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase activity and low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-r) levels. The extract was able to reduce total cholesterol and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (C-HDL) levels and increase the C-HDL levels reduced in diabetes, decreasing the atherogenic index and therefore the risk of suffering CVD at the same level as atorvastatin. The HMG-CoA reductase activity and LDL-r levels were not modified by the administration of E. carlinae. The results demonstrate the hypolipidemic potential of ethanol extract of E. carlinae and support its use in traditional medicine as a hypolipidemic agent.

      • Audio Watermarking Based on Wavelet Transform and Quantization Index Modulation

        In this paper, we present a technique for embedding digital watermarks into digital audio signals. Watermarking is a technique used to label digital media by hiding copyright or other information in the underlying data. In the case of digital audio, the main constraint is the tradeoff between robustness and imperceptibility, as hearing is one of the most sensitive human senses. In our method, the audio host signal is divided into several frames; each of these frames is decomposed using a wavelet transform. To the wavelet coefficients we apply distortion compensated (DC) quantization index modulation (QIM). For additional security we use dither modulation (DM). As a result, for our proposed method the watermarked host signal has good quality, and is robust over common attacks such as MPEG- 1 layer 3 (mp3 compression), low pass filtering, white noise and echo.

        Preoperative implant planning considering alveolar bone grafting needs and complication prediction using panoramic versus CBCT images

        Purpose: This study was performed to determine the efficacy of observers’ prediction for the need of bone grafting and presence of perioperative complications on the basis of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic radiographic (PAN) planning as compared to the surgical outcome. Materials and Methods: One hundred and eight partially edentulous patients with a need for implant rehabilitation were referred for preoperative imaging. Imaging consisted of PAN and CBCT images. Four observers carried out implant planning using PAN image datasets, and at least one month later, using CBCT image datasets. Based on their own planning, the observers assessed the need for bone graft augmentation as well as complication prediction. The implant length and diameter, the need for bone graft augmentation, and the occurrence of anatomical complications during planning and implant placement were statistically compared. Results: In the 108 patients, 365 implants were installed. Receiver operating characteristic analyses of both PAN and CBCT preoperative planning showed that CBCT performed better than PAN-based planning with respect to the need for bone graft augmentation and perioperative complications. The sensitivity and the specificity of CBCT forimplant complications were 96.5% and 90.5%, respectively, and for bone graft augmentation, they were 95.2% and 96.3%, respectively. Significant differences were found between PAN-based planning and the surgery of posterior implant lengths. Conclusion: Our findings indicated that CBCT-based preoperative implant planning enabled treatment planning with a higher degree of prediction and agreement as compared to the surgical standard. In PAN-based surgery, the prediction of implant length was poor.

        Does cone-beam CT alter treatment plans? Comparison of preoperative implant planning using panoramic versus cone-beam CT images

        Purpose: The present study was performed to compare the planning of implant placement based on panoramic radiography (PAN) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, and to study the impact of the image dataset on the treatment planning. CBCT provided images with improved scores for subjective image quality and surgical confidence levels. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, there was a trend toward PAN-based preoperative planning of implant placement leading towards the use of longer implants within the posterior jaw bone.

        Prolonged excretion of a low-pathogenicity H5N2 avian influenza virus strain in the Pekin duck

        H5N2 strains of low-pathogenicity avian influenza virus (LPAIV) have been circulating for at least 17 years in some Mexican chicken farms. We measured the rate and duration of viral excretion from Pekin ducks that were experimentally inoculated with an H5N2 LPAIV that causes death in embryonated chicken eggs (A/chicken/Mexico/2007). Leghorn chickens were used as susceptible host controls. The degree of viral excretion was evaluated with real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RRT-PCR) using samples from oropharyngeal and cloacal swabs. We observed prolonged excretion from both species of birds lasting for at least 21 days. Prolonged excretion of LPAIV A/chicken/Mexico/2007 is atypical.

        Adaptive Super Twisting Control of a Dual-rotor VTOL Flight System Under Model Uncertainties

        This paper addresses an adaptive super twisting control for a dual-rotor flight system subject to uncertainties. The system can perform vertical take-off and landing, roll and yaw movements. The dynamical model is described under the Euler-Lagrange approach, where a characterization of the thrust and the torque of the rotors is included. However, uncertainties such as friction and unmodeled dynamics remain. To overcome these problems, a class of adaptive sliding mode control is designed, which is robust to bounded uncertainties and external perturbations, offers reduced chattering, and not overestimate the control gain. Furthermore, the closed-loop stability is analyzed. Finally, simulation and experimental validation, and a comparison versus other standard control approaches illustrate the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed controller.

        Long-Term Outcomes of Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Using Stand-Alone Ray Threaded Cage for Degenerative Disk Disease: A 20-Year Follow-Up

        Study Design: Retrospective study. Purpose: To analyze outcomes of posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) stand-alone cages. Overview of Literature: PLIF for degenerative disk disease using stand-alone cages has lost its popularity owing to implant-related complications and pseudoarthrosis. Methods: We analyzed the records of 45 patients (18 women, 27 men), operated between January 1994 and December 1996, with a mean follow-up of 18 years 3 months (20 years 3 months–22 years 3 months). Clinical outcomes were measured using visual analogue score (VAS), Oswestry disability index (ODI), Odom’s criteria, and radiological measurements of fusion rate, Cobb angle, and implant-related complications conducted at the preoperative evaluation, hospital discharge, 12-month follow-up, and final follow-up. Results: Preoperative mean VAS (back) was 6.9 and VAS (radicular) was 7.2, with mean improvements (p <0.05) of 2.9 and 3.1, respectively, at the final follow-up. Median preoperative ODI was 64.5, with a mean improvement to 34 and 42 at the 12-month and final follow-ups, respectively (p <0.05). Odom’s criteria at the 12-month follow-up were excellent in 11.2% patients, good in 57.7%, fair in 31.1%, and poor in none of the patients; at the final follow-up, no patient was classified as excellent, 71.1% as good, 22.2% as fair, and 6.7% as poor (p <0.05). Pseudoarthrosis was observed in five patients (11.1%), of whom, three (6.6%) required re-operation. Preoperative disk height was 9.23 mm, which increased to 13.33 mm in the immediate postoperative evaluation and was maintained at 10.0 mm at the final follow-up (p <0.05). The preoperative mean L1–S1 Cobb angle was 34.7°, which changed to 44.7° in the immediate postoperative evaluation and dropped to 39.7° at the final follow-up (p <0.005). Conclusions: PLIF stand-alone cages were associated with good clinical outcomes. Although the fusion rate was excellent, maintenance of disk heights and a lordotic alignment were not achieved in the long term.

        Tetravalent Dengue Vaccine Reduces Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Dengue Virus Infections in Healthy Children and Adolescents Aged 2–16 Years in Asia and Latin America

        <P><B><I>Background.</I></B> Asymptomatic dengue virus–infected individuals are thought to play a major role in dengue virus transmission. The efficacy of the recently approved quadrivalent CYD-TDV dengue vaccine against asymptomatic dengue virus infection has not been previously assessed.</P><P><B><I>Methods.</I></B> We pooled data for 3 736 individuals who received either CYD-TDV or placebo at 0, 6, and 12 months in the immunogenicity subsets of 2 phase 3 trials (clinical trials registration NCT01373281 and NCT01374516). We defined a seroconversion algorithm (ie, a ≥4-fold increase in the neutralizing antibody titer and a titer of ≥40 from month 13 to month 25) as a surrogate marker of asymptomatic infection in the vaccine and placebo groups.</P><P><B><I>Results.</I></B> The algorithm detected seroconversion in 94% of individuals with a diagnosis of virologically confirmed dengue between months 13 and 25, validating its discriminatory power. Among those without virologically confirmed dengue (n = 3 669), 219 of 2 485 in the vaccine group and 157 of 1 184 in the placebo group seroconverted between months 13 and 25, giving a vaccine efficacy of 33.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 17.9%–46.1%) against asymptomatic infection. Vaccine efficacy was marginally higher in subjects aged 9–16 years (38.6%; 95% CI, 22.1%–51.5%). The annual incidence of asymptomatic dengue virus infection in this age group was 14.8%, which was 4.4 times higher than the incidence for symptomatic dengue (3.4%).</P><P><B><I>Conclusions.</I></B> The observed vaccine efficacy against asymptomatic dengue virus infections is expected to translate into reduced dengue virus transmission if sufficient individuals are vaccinated in dengue-endemic areas.</P>
