A regional approach for health risk assessment of toxicants in plastic food containers

        Nguyen Lan Binh Thi,Thanh Truc Nguyen Thi,Nguyen Ngoc Tran Thi,Vu Dinh Khang,Lee Byeong-Kyu 한국독성학회 2023 Toxicological Research Vol.39 No.4

Plastic food containers are being used popularly, generating a waste of about 115 million tons in Vietnam. Such waste is causing environmental and health issues. This study conducted a field survey with 250 local people and selected 59 samples out of 135 plastic food containers collected in Go Vap district, Vietnam. Collected plastic samples identified compositions were PET 13.6%, PP 28.8%, PS 16.9%, and 40.7% undefined plastics. Collected plastic samples were classified based on the plastic type using recycling code and quantitatively analyzed with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy method to assess concentrations of Cd, Sb, Pb, Hg, Sn, Cr, Br, Cl, and S. Most of these collected plastic samples (91.5%) were found to contain 8/9 hazardous substances and most elements contained in these plastics were below their standard thresholds. These elements in plastic samples could be divided as the result into three hazard groups: (1) high hazard group (Sb, Cl, and S); (2) medium hazard group (Cr, Br and Hg); and (3) low hazard groups (Cd, Pb and Sn). Among substances in the high hazard group, element Sb was assessed for its migration because only Sb is regulated in Vietnam in QCVN 12-1: 2011/BYT. Substances of Cl, S, Cr, Br, and Hg (group 1, 2) do not have regulations related to the method of decontamination. Thus, additional health risks need to be assessed using the USEtox model. Finally, this study proposed a screening process to assess the risk of toxicity of elements contained in plastic food containers through ISO 31000:2018.

The ride-hailing service is considered as an exploding transportation mean throughout Vietnam. While most of citizens in big cities have accepted ride-hailing service, there are still a significant number of non-users in small and non-cities. Analyzing the factors that influence the adoption intention toward Grab ride-hailing service in Vietnam is especially critical to encourage the usage of this service. This paper proposes the structural framework based on the combination between the theory of perceived value, perceived risks and theory of innovation acceptance to predict the adoption intention of nonusers. The perceived value is measured by utilitarian benefits and hedonic benefits (perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEOU) – the former, perceived enjoyment – the latter). The perceived risk is conceptualized by three variables: privacy risk, security risk, and performance risk. Subjective norms also support the adoption intention. The new variable automobile dependency is added to examine its positive impact on adoption intention. The data was collected in Vietnam, the respondents are non-users or indirect users of Grab ride-hailing service from small or non-cities. The result shows that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived enjoyment, subjective norms directly affect perceived value, which directly affect the adoption intention. Additionally, perceived risk also significantly impacts the adoption intention and moderates the relationship between perceived value and adoption intention. Finally, the automobile dependency influences the adoption intention of Grab ride-hailing service.

Environmental-friendly method for preparing CoFe2O4 coated biopolymer extracted from dragon fruit peel: Characterization and application as nanocomposite adsorbent for removal of As(III) pollutants from aqueous solution

Lan Huong Nguyen,Van Son Le,Luu Dung Tran,Nam Van Thai,Ho Thi Ngoc Tram,Bui Quang Minh,Van Huy Nguyen 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.118 No.-

This study successfully developed a low-cost adsorbent from compositing between magnetic nanoparticle(CoFe2O4) and dragon fruit peel-derived biopolymer (DFP-BP) and applied it to remove arsenite (As(III)) from contaminated water. The batch experiments were designed to study the influence of operationalparameters on As(III) adsorption by nanocomposite (CoFe2O4@DFP-BP). With mapping analysis, the synthesized CoFe2O4@DFP-BP was characterized using SBET, SEM, FTIR, XRD, and EDS mapping. TheAs(III) adsorption mechanism was discussed based on material property data and isotherm and kineticanalysis. The result suggests that 5% is the best modification ratio on the CoFe2O4@DFP-BP for As(III)adsorption. The highest adsorption capacity of As(III) under the optimal conditions of pH 7, adsorbentdosage of 1.6 g/L, initial As(III) concentration of 2000 lg/L and the best described by the Sips modelwas 1922.7 lg/g. The adsorption kinetic followed pseudo-second-order, proving As(III) adsorption processcontrolled by chemisorption. The primary reaction pathway of As(III) adsorption on theCoFe2O4@DFP-BP5 was inner-sphere complexation through exchange between the nanoadsorbent’s surfaceand As(III) ions via oxygen-containing functional (carboxyl and hydroxyl) groups. The CoFe2O4 magneticnanoparticles coated by biopolymer overcame drawbacks, including low stability and mechanicalstrength of biopolymer and agglomerate trend of magnetic nanoparticles. The adsorption process washighly reversible and accessible in the separation of nanoadsorbent after adsorption by the magnet. Therefore, the nanocomposite formed from solid waste has excellent potential as a material for removingAs, contributing to sustainable development and feasibility in practical application.

The Determinants of Profitability in Listed Enterprises: A Study from Vietnamese Stock Exchange

NGUYEN, Thi Ngoc Lan,NGUYEN, Van Cong Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.1

The research aims to investigate the determinants of the financial performance of 1343 Vietnamese companies categorized into six different industries listed on the Vietnamese Stock Exchange over a four-year period from 2014 to 2017 using STATA software. Those determinants include firm size, liquidity, solvency, financial leverage, and financial adequacy while the financial performance is evaluated by three different ratios: return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and return on sales (ROS). The research results from these companies during the given period indicate that: (1) Firm size has a positive impact on both ROA and ROS, especially ROA but it has the opposite effect on ROE, (2) Adequacy ratio impacts positively on ROA and ROS but negatively on ROE, (3) Financial leverage considerably negative influences on ROE and ROS but positively impacts on ROA, (4) Liquidity has a positive effect on both ROA and ROE but a negative one on ROS and (5) Solvency has a positive impact on ROA and ROS but the negative impact on ROE. Furthermore, agriculture accounted for the highest percentage of profitability at the beginning, which was replaced by service for ROA but manufacture for ROE from 2016 to 2017 as opposed to the least in transportation.

Effect of salicylic acid and yeast extract on curcuminoids biosynthesis gene expression and curcumin accumulation in cells of Curcuma zedoaria

Lan, Truong Thi Phuong,Huy, Nguyen Duc,Luong, Nguyen Ngoc,Quang, Hoang Tan,Tan, Trinh Huu,Thu, Le Thi Anh,Huy, Nguyen Xuan,Loc, Nguyen Hoang The Korean Society of Plant Biotechnology 2019 식물생명공학회지 Vol.46 No.3

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of yeast extract (YE) and salicylic acid (SA) on the expression of curcuminoid-biosynthesis genes (CzDCS and CURS1-3), and accumulation of curcumin in Curcuma zedoaria cell cultures. The results showed that, in cells treated with YE or SA, the expression levels of curcuminoid genes were 1.14- to 3.64-fold higher than the control (untreated cells), in which the YE exhibited a stronger effect in comparison with SA. Curcumin accumulation also tended to be similar to gene expression, curcumin contents in YE- or SA-treated cells were 1.61- to 2.53-fold higher than the control. The SA treatment at the fifth day of culture stimulated the curcumin accumulation and expression in all four genes compared to that at the beginning. While the YE treatments gave different results, the CzCURS1 and CzCURS3 genes were expressed strongly in cells that were treated at the beginning. However, the CzDCS and CzCURS2 genes showed the opposite expression pattern, they were activated strongly in the treatments at day five of the culture. However, the content of curcumin reached its maximum value on the fifth day of culture in all investigations.
