Experiences of Asian psychologists and counselors trained in the USA: an exploratory study

Michael Goh,연규진,Tatsuya Hirai,Yukiko Shimmi 서울대학교 교육연구소 2014 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.15 No.4

This study qualitatively explored the pre-departure to reentry experiences of Asian international psychologists and counselors trained in the USA. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 participants from four different Asian countries. Inductive analysis with Consensual Qualitative Research methods was used to analyze the interview data. Three domains and 25 themes emerged from the analysis of the data, representing participants’ key domains as motivation to study in the USA, various sojourn experiences, and multiple reentry challenges. Findings are discussed in terms of training applications for Asian counseling students as well as the cross-national application of US counseling training. Recommendations for educators, supervisors, and prospective international students are suggested.

Multi-view gait recognition using a doubly-kernel approach on the Grassmann manifold

Connie, Tee,Goh, Kah Ong Michael,Teoh, Andrew Beng Jin Elsevier 2016 Neurocomputing Vol.216 No.-

Abstract

View variation is one of the greatest challenges faced by the gait recognition research community. Recently, there are studies that model sets of gait features from multiple views as linear subspaces, which are known to form a special manifold called the Grassmann manifold. Conjecturing that modeling via linear subspace representation is not completely sufficient for gait recognition across view change, we take a step forward to consider non-linear subspace representation. A collection of multi-view gait features encapsulated in the form of a linear subspace is projected to the non-linear subspace through the expansion coefficients induced by kernel principal component analysis. Since subspace representation is inherently non-Euclidean, naïve vectorization as input to the vector-based pattern analysis machines is expected to yield suboptimal accuracy performance. We deal with this difficulty by embedding the manifold in a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS) through a positive definite kernel function defined on the Grassmann manifold. A closer examination reveals that the proposed approach can actually be interpreted as a doubly-kernel method. To be specific, the first kernel maps the linear subspace representation non-linearly to a feature space; while the second kernel permits the application of kernelization-enabled machines established for vector-based data on the manifold-valued multi-view gait features. Experiments on the CASIA gait database shows that the proposed doubly-kernel method is effective against view change in gait recognition.

Highlights

A Grassmann doubly-kernel approach is presented for multi-view gait recognition.

A collection of multi-view gait samples are represented as linear subspaces.

Non-linear variant of original subspaces are constructed via basis induced by KPCA.

Kernelized Grassmann kernels are introduced for application of vector-based method.

Experiments show promising results for gait recognition with vast view difference.

A longitudinal study of career maturity of Korean adolescents: the effects of personal and contextual factors

연규진,정주리,Michael Goh 서울대학교 교육연구소 2012 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.13 No.4

The purpose of this longitudinal study is to examine the effects of personal factors and contextual determinants on the career maturity change of Korean adolescents over a 5-year period. This study used data from the Korea Youth Panel Survey which was administered to 3,449 junior high students from Grades 8 to 12, starting in 2003. A linear mixed-effects regression was used to test the study model. The results showed the levels of Korean adolescents' career maturity were significantly influenced by personal predictors (gender, work values, career efficacy, self-efficacy, career development activities, school achievement, sex-role stereotyping, pressure for academic achievement, and part-time experiences) and contextual predictors (career conversations with parents, relationships with friends, and private education expense). Among career-related variables, only work values affected the slope of the career maturity growth curve. Implications for career counselors and educators are discussed.

        Drug—target network

        Yıldırım, Muhammed A,Goh, Kwang-Il,Cusick, Michael E,Barabá,si, Albert-Lá,szló,Vidal, Marc Nature Pub. Co 2007 Nature biotechnology Vol.25 No.10

The global set of relationships between protein targets of all drugs and all disease-gene products in the human protein–protein interaction or 'interactome' network remains uncharacterized. We built a bipartite graph composed of US Food and Drug Administration–approved drugs and proteins linked by drug–target binary associations. The resulting network connects most drugs into a highly interlinked giant component, with strong local clustering of drugs of similar types according to Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification. Topological analyses of this network quantitatively showed an overabundance of 'follow-on' drugs, that is, drugs that target already targeted proteins. By including drugs currently under investigation, we identified a trend toward more functionally diverse targets improving polypharmacology. To analyze the relationships between drug targets and disease-gene products, we measured the shortest distance between both sets of proteins in current models of the human interactome network. Significant differences in distance were found between etiological and palliative drugs. A recent trend toward more rational drug design was observed.

Multicultural Knowledge and Skills of Singaporean Master Therapists

        Len Jennings,Ashley Gulden,Michael Oien,Vilma D’Rozario,Michael Goh,Thomas M. Skovholt 한국상담학회 2012 Journal of Asia Pacific counseling Vol.2 No.2

An international team of researchers from Singapore and the United States conducted a qualitative investigation of the multicultural competencies of Singaporean master therapists (i.e., expert therapists). Six Singaporean master therapists, previously studied and identified through an extensive peer nomination sampling procedure (Jennings et al., 2008), were reinterviewed to explore how these master therapists conceptualize and conduct cross-cultural counseling. Utilizing data analytic procedures from consensual qualitative research (CQR) and grounded theory, eight themes within two categories were identified. The Multicultural Knowledge category contained four themes (Self-Knowledge, Cultural Immersion, Cultural Knowledge, and Knowledge of Systemic/Historic Oppression). Another four themes (Respect, Cultural Misunderstandings Lead to Humility and Growth, Ask, Dontained four th Suspend Judgment and Avoid Imposing Values) were organized under the Multicultural Skills category. Recommendations for future research and implications for clinical practice are discussed.

PARAGON (ANZGOG-0903): a phase 2 study of anastrozole in asymptomatic patients with estrogen and progesterone receptor-positive recurrent ovarian cancer and CA125 progression

        Peey-Sei Kok,Philip Beale,Rachel L. O'Connell,Peter Grant,Tony Bonaventura,James Scurry,Yoland Antill,Jeffrey Goh,Katrin Sjoquist,Anna DeFazio,Cristina Mapagu,Frederic Amant,Michael Friedlander,PARAGO 대한부인종양학회 2019 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.30 No.5

Objective: A subset of patients with recurrent ovarian cancer (ROC) may benefit from antiestrogen therapy with higher response rates reported in tumors that are strongly estrogen receptor (ER)-positive (ER+). PARAGON is a basket trial that incorporates 7 phase 2 trials investigating the activity of anastrozole in patients with ER+ and/or progesterone receptor (PR)-positive (PR+) recurrent/metastatic gynecological cancers. Methods: Postmenopausal women with ER+ and/or PR+ ROC, who were asymptomatic and had cancer antigen 125 (CA125) progression after response to first line chemotherapy, where chemotherapy was not clinically indicated. Patients received anastrozole 1 mg daily until progression or unacceptable toxicity. Results: Fifty-four patients were enrolled (52 evaluable). Clinical benefit at three months (primary endpoint) was observed in 18 patients (34.6%; 95% confidence interval [CI]=23%–48%). Median progression-free survival (PFS) was 2.7 months (95% CI=2.1–3.1). The median duration of clinical benefit was 6.5 months (95% CI=2.8–11.7). Most patients progressed within 6 months of starting anastrozole but 12 (22%) continued treatment for longer than 6 months. Anastrozole was well tolerated. In the exploratory analysis, ER histoscores and the intensity of ER staining did not correlate with clinical benefit rate or PFS. Conclusion: A subset of asymptomatic patients with ER+ and/or PR+ ROC and CA125 progression had durable clinical benefit on anastrozole, with acceptable toxicity. Anastrozole may delay symptomatic progression and the time to subsequent chemotherapy. The future challenge is to identify the subset of patients most likely to benefit from an aromatase inhibitor and whether the clinical benefit could be increased by the addition of other agents.
