Identification of the optimal faculty behaviors for performance improvement in distance education

Mehmet Kara,Zahide Yildirim 서울대학교 교육연구소 2020 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.21 No.1

The current study reports the findings of the first step of a comprehensive performance improvement study, identification of the optimal behaviors. In this sense, this study aims to determine the optimal faculty behaviors in distance education based on the perspectives of the stakeholders based on the framework of transactional distance (TD) theory. The data were obtained from the stakeholders of distance education practices; distance education experts from eight universities, and faculty members, administrators, and students from two universities as well as observations on online courses and available relevant documents. The data from the multiple sources were analyzed through constant comparison method. The emerged codes created the themes based on the TD theory. The findings indicated that the identified behaviors, which are student-centered and interrelated in producing the outcomes, are expected from all faculty at varying degrees in any context to manage TD outcomes. The identified behaviors might be used as the performance objectives in faculty professional development studies and practices in distance education.

Infill wall effects on the dynamic characteristics of RC frame systems via operational modal analysis

        Mehmet A. Komur,Mehmet E. Kara,Ibrahim O. Deneme 국제구조공학회 2020 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.74 No.1

This paper presents an experimental study on the dynamic characteristics of infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frames. A 1/3-scaled, one-bay, three-storey RC frame was produced and tested by using operational modal analysis (OMA). The experiments were performed on five specimens: one reference frame with no infill walls and four frames with infill walls. The RC frame systems included infill walls made of hollow clay brick, which were constructed in four different patterns. The dynamic characteristics of the patterns, including the frequency, mode shapes and damping ratios in the in-plane direction, were obtained by 6 accelerometers. Twenty-minute records under ambient vibration were collected for each model, and the dynamic characteristics were determined using the ambient vibration testing and modal identification software (ARTeMIS). The experimental studies showed that the infill walls significantly affected the frequency value, rigidity and damping ratio of the RC frame system.

The metameric effect of monolithic zirconias with varying yttrium ratios

Mehmet Ejder Güven,Özlem Kara 대한치과보철학회 2024 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.16 No.1

Purpose. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of different shade selection techniques and determine the matching success of crown restorations fabricated using digital shade selection techniques. Materials and methods. Teeth numbers 11 and 21 were prepared on a typodont model. For the #11 tooth, six different crowns were fabricated with randomly selected colors and set as the target crowns. The following four test groups were established: Group C, where the visual shade selection was performed using the Vita 3D Master Shade Guide and the group served as the control; Group Ph, where the shade selection was performed under the guidance of dental photography; Group S, where the shade selection was performed by measuring the target tooth color using a spectrophotometer; and Group I, where the shade selection was performed by scanning the test specimens and target crowns using an intraoral scanner. Based on the test groups, 24 crowns were fabricated using different shade selection techniques. The ΔE values were calculated according to the CIEDE2000 (2:1:1) formula. The collected data were analyzed by means of a one-way analysis of variance. Results. For the four test groups (Groups C, Ph, S, and I), the following mean ΔE values were obtained: 2.74, 3.62, 2.13, and 3.5, respectively. No significant differences were found among the test groups. Conclusion. Although there was no statistically significant difference among the shade selection techniques, Group S had relatively lower ΔE values. Moreover, according to the test results, the spectrophotometer shade selection technique may provide more successful clinical results.

HoneyThing: A New Honeypot Design for CPE Devices

( Omer Erdem ),( Abdurrahman Pekta ),( Mehmet Kara ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2018 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.12 No.9

The Internet of Things (IoT) has become an emerging industry that is broadly used in many fields from industrial and agricultural manufacturing to home automation and hospitality industry. Because of the sheer number of connected devices transmitting valuable data, the IoT infrastructures have become a main target for cyber-criminals. One of the key challenges in protecting IoT devices is the lack of security measures by design. Although there are many hardware and software based security solutions (firewalls, honeypots, IPDS, anti-virus etc.) for information systems, most of these solutions cannot be applied to IoT devices because of the fact that IoT devices have limited computing resources (CPU, RAM,). In this paper, we propose a honeypot system called HoneyThing for modem/router devices (i.e. a kind of IoT device). HoneyThing emulates TR-069 protocol which is prevalent protocol used to remotely manage customer-premises equipment (CPE) devices, e.g. modems, routers. Honeything also serves an embedded web server simulating a few actual, critical vulnerabilities associated with the implementation of TR-069 protocol. To show effectiveness of the HoneyThing in capturing real world attacks, we have deployed it in the Internet. The obtained results are highly promising and facilitate to reveal network attacks targeting to CPE devices.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Patients with Psoriatic Arthritis: Ultrasonography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings

        Tezcan Ezgi Akyildiz,Levendoglu Funda,Durmaz Mehmet Sedat,Kara Hasan,Batur Elif Balevi,Gezer Ilknur Albayrak,Korez Muslu Kazım 대한류마티스학회 2023 대한류마티스학회지 Vol.30 No.1

Objective: The aim of the present study is to assess carpal tunnel syndrome's (CTS’s) ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and compare them with healthy controls. Methods: Thirty-nine PsA and twenty-eight healthy volunteers were examined in this study. Demographic and clinical features were recorded. CTS-6, a diagnostic algorithm, was used to estimate the probability of CTS. Electrodiagnostic study (EDS) was applied to all wrists included in the report, where the diagnosis of CTS was made by EDS. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve was measured at pisiform bone level by US and MRI. Results: Regarding to the demographic characteristics, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups. Twelve of 39 (30.76%) PsA patients had CTS, whereas CTS was not detected in the control group (p=0.001). US and MRI showed increased median nerve CSA in PsA patients compared to healthy controls (p=0.005, p<0.001; respectively). Also, US and MRI showed increased median nerve CSA in CTS patients compared to others (p=0.002, p<0.001; respectively). The Pearson correlation coefficient between MRI and US measurements of the CSA was 0.85 (p<0.001). Conclusion: CTS frequency in PsA patients is found higher than healthy controls. The relationship between CTS diagnosed by EDS and CSA measured by both US and MRI was observed in PsA patients.

      • Multi-biomarker approach to metabolic syndrome and associated diseases in Turkey: a cross sectional study

        ( Semra Can Mamur ),( Omer Colak ),( Selma Metintas ),( Inci Arikan ),( Mehmet Kara ) 한국정맥경장영양학회 2023 한국정맥경장영양학회지 Vol.15 No.3

Purpose: Biomarker for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are important in the clinical monitoring of individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). The use of these biomarkers in combination may be predictive of CVDs. This study aimed to demonstrate the ability of multiple biomarkers to predict MetS, diabetes mellitus (DM), and CVDs. The use of multiple biomarkers instead of a single biomarker may be more useful in early diagnosis. We investigated the use of a multi-biomarker approach in MetS and associated diseases. Methods: The study was performed by selecting control (n=30), MetS (n=30), MetS+DM (n=30), and MetS+CVD (n=30) groups from data of the Eskisehir Healthy Hearts Project conducted from January 2008 to October 2009 in Turkey. We recorded serum level of biomarkers, including lipid profile, liver enzyme, paraoxonase, arylesterase and arginase to find their difference among the groups. Results: Compared to the control group, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and arginase levels increased, while paraoxonase and arylesterase activity and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were low in the patient groups (P<0.001). A negative correlation was observed between paraoxonase and arylesterase activity and MetS. Conclusion: We believe that the combined use of biomarkers, including GGT, arginase, paraoxonase, and arylesterase, may be useful in predicting diseases such as MetS and CVDs.

Alveolar Bone Protective and Hypoglycemic Effects of Systemic Propolis Treatment in Experimental Periodontitis and Diabetes Mellitus

        Cu¨neyt Asım Aral,Servet Kesim,Henry Greenwell,Mehmet Kara,Aysun Cxetin,Birkan Yakan 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.2

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the anti-inflammatory effects of propolis on the systemic and local effects on experimental periodontitis and diabetes. Fifty-six Wistar rats were divided into seven groups: (1) negativecontrol (NC), (2) periodontitis (P), (3) diabetes (D), (4) diabetes + periodontitis (DP), (5) periodontitis + propolis (P-Pro), (6) diabetes + propolis (D-Pro), and (7) diabetes + periodontitis + propolis (DP-Pro). Periodontitis was induced by ligature placement and diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection. Propolis (Pro) was administrated by oral gavage (100 mg/kg/day). On day 21, plasma was obtained for analysis and alveolar bone level was evaluated using histomorphometric analysis. Compared to NC the final blood glucose levels for D-Pro was not significantly different (P = .052), however, D, DP, and DPPro were significantly different. There were no statistically significant differences in blood glucose concentrations between P and P-Pro, between D and D-Pro, and between DP and DP-Pro. All groups showed significantly more alveolar bone loss compared with NC. A significant difference in bone loss was found between P and P-Pro, and DP and DP-Pro, however there was no difference between D and D-Pro. Plasma interleukin 1beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) levels were not significantly different among groups. In conclusion, propolis reduced fasting blood glucose levels in diabetes. In addition, propolis might be beneficial as an adjunct treatment of diabetes associated periodontitis and periodontitis without diabetes.
