Phytochemical and Pharmacological Investigations on Moringa peregrina (Forssk) Fiori

        Seham A. Elbatran,Omar M. Abdel-Salam,Khaled A. Abdelshfeek,Naglaa M. Nazif,Shams I. Ismail,Faiza M. Hammouda 한국생약학회 2005 Natural Product Sciences Vol.11 No.4

Investigation of M. peregrina aerial parts revealed the isolation and identification of 4-flavonoidalcompounds, quercetin, quercetin-3-0-rutinoside (rutin), chrysoeriol-7-0-rhamnoside and 6,8,3/,5/-tetramethoxyapigenin. The compounds were identified by TLC, PC, MS, and H1-NMR. The fatty acids and unsaponifiablematter were studied. The LD50 for M. peregrina was 113.4 mg/100 g b.wt. Repeated intraperitoneal injection of 1/20 and 1/10 LD50 (5.67 mg and 11.34 mg/100 g b.wt.) of defatted alcoholic extract of M. peregrina for 30 daysinduced significant decrease in serum glucose, liver enzymes and lipid components. M. peregrina administeredi.p., 30 min prior to carrageenan at the above doses significantly inhibited the rat paw oedema response. In acuteM. peregrina exhibited markedanalgesic properties. In addition, M. peregrina administered at time of indomethacin injection inhibited thedevelopment of gastric lesions in rats.

Management of Charcoal Rot of Sesame by Seed Soaking in Medicinal Plant Extracts and Hot Water

        Hoda A. M. Ahmed,A. A. Abdel-Razik,M. H. A. Hassan,S. A. Khaled 한국식물병리학회 2010 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.26 No.4

Macrophomina phaseolina causing charcoal rot was isolated from sesame seeds (cvs. Giza 32 and Shandawel-3)collected from different localities of Assiut, Sohage and El-Minia Governorates. The fungus was found in the highest frequently in samples collected from Assiut Governorate followed by Sohag and finally EL Minia Governorate. The obtained isolates were different in their virulence on the tested sesame cvs. Also, they differed in their growth nature including colony color and sclerotial production. The color of colonies of the pathogen seem to be correlated with density of sclerotial formation. Aqueous extracts of Majorna, Wild chamomile,Geranium oil and Nees plants were highly toxic to tested isolates of M. phaseolina, in vitro. On the other hand the rest of the tested aqueous extracts had no effect. Under greenhouse conditions in 2005 and 2006seasons, soaking seeds of sesame before sowing in aqueous extracts of Eucalyptus, Nerium, Ocimum and Roesmary plants decreased the disease incidence. Aqueous extracts of Eucalyptus and Ocimum were the most effective treatment. Dipping sesame seeds in hot water at 60oC for 5 minutes increased seed germination of Giza 32 and Shandawel-3 cvs. followed by 55 oC, 50oC and 45oC, while 40oC treatment resulted the lowest seed germination rate. Dipping sesame seeds in hot water at different temperature before planting decreased seed, seedling and charcoal rots. Soaking seeds in hot water at 60oC increased greatly plant height and decreased seed, seedling rot and charcoal rot followed by 55oC and 50oC, under greenhouse condition.

New issue of GaN nanoparticles solar cell

        M.A. Qaeed,K. Ibrahim,K.M.A. Saron,M.S. Mukhlif,A. Ismail,Nezar G. Elfadill,Khaled M. Chahrour,Q.N. Abdullah,K.S.A. Aldroobi 한국물리학회 2015 Current Applied Physics Vol.15 No.4

This study involves the synthesis of gallium nitride (GaN) nanoparticles (NPs) under different low temperatures using a simple chemical method. The nanoparticles are spin coated on Si substrate to fabricate the solar cell. The FESEM images obtained indicate the presence of cubic GaN nanoparticle with average diameter of 50 nm synthesized at 90 ℃. The spin coating technique deposited n-GaN NPs/Si(111) produced a heterojunction solar cell with fill factor of 0.56 and conversion efficiency of 2.06%. Based on these results, this study proposes a novel low cost technique for the fabrication of GaN NPs solar cells.

Shikimic acid recovers diarrhea and its complications in SD rats fed lactose diet to induce diarrhea

        Khaled M. M. Koriem,Alaa M. A. Abdeen 한국실험동물학회 2023 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.39 No.4

Background: Diarrhea is the increase of excretion of human water content and an imbalance in the physiologic processes of the small and large intestine while shikimic acid is an important biochemical metabolite in plants. This study aims to study the anti-diarrheal activity of shikimic acid through restoring kidney function, antioxidant activity, inflammatory markers, sodium/potassium-ATPase activity, apoptosis genes, and histology of the kidney in SD rats fed lactose diet to induce diarrhea. Results: Thirty-six male SD rats (150 ± 10 g, 12 weeks old) were divided into 2 equal groups (18 rats/group) as follows: normal and diarrheal rats. Normal rats were divided into 3 equal groups of 6 rats each: the control, shikimic acid, and desmopressin drug groups. Diarrheal rats were also divided into 3 equal groups of 6 rats each: diarrheal, diarrheal rats + shikimic acid, and diarrheal rats + desmopressin drug groups. Shikimic acid restored serum urea and creatinine, urinary volume, kidney weight, sodium, potassium, and chloride balance in serum and urine. The acid returned the antioxidant (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, malondialdehyde, NADPH oxidase activity, conjugated dienes, and oxidative index) activity and the inflammatory markers (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, and interleukin-10) to values approaching the control values. Shikimic acid also restored the sodium/potassium-ATPase activity, the apoptosis genes p53 and bcl-2, and the histology of kidney tissue in diarrheal rats to be near the control group. Conclusions: Shikimic acid rescues diarrhea and its complications through restoring kidney function, serum and urinary electrolytes, antioxidant activity, inflammatory markers, sodium/potassium-ATPase activity, the apoptosis genes, and the histology of the kidney in diarrheal rats to approach the control one.

Immune Defense of Rats Immunized with Fennel Honey, Propolis, and Bee Venom Against Induced Staphylococcal Infection

        S.M. Sayed,Ghada A. Abou El-Ella,Nahed M. Wahba,Neveen A. El Nisr,Khaled Raddad,M.F. Abd El Rahman,M.M. Abd El Hafeez,Ahmed Abd El Fattah Aamer 한국식품영양과학회 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.3

The objective of this work was to evaluate the potency of bee product-immunized rats to overcome an induced Staphylococcus aureus infection. Forty rats were divided to eight groups: T1, T3, and T5 received, respectively, fennel honey, ethanol, and aqueous propolis extracts orally, and T2, T4, and T6 were administered the respective materials intraperitoneally; T7 received bee venom by the bee sting technique; and T8 was the control group. All groups were challenged by a bovine clinical mastitis isolate of S. aureus. Each rat received 2mL of broth inoculated with 1×105 colony-forming units/mL intraperitoneally. Two weeks post-induced infection all rats were sacrificed and eviscerated for postmortem inspection and histopathological study. Three rats from T8 and one rat from T7 died before sacrifice. Another two rats, one each in T4 and T5, had morbidity manifestations. The remaining experimental animals showed apparently healthy conditions until time of sacrifice. Postmortem inspection revealed that all T8 rats showed different degrees of skeletal muscle and internal organ paleness with scattered focal pus nodules mainly on lungs and livers. All rats of the treated groups showed normal postmortem features except three rats. A dead rat in group T7 showed focal pus nodules on the lung surface only, whereas the affected two rats in groups T4 and T5 appeared normal except with some pus nodules, but much smaller than in the control, scattered on the hepatic surface and mesentery. Histopathological studies revealed that T8 rats had typical suppurative bronchopneumonia and or severe degenerative and necrobiotic changes in hepatic tissues. Three affected rats of the treated groups showed slight bronchopneumonia or degenerative hepatic changes only. The other animals of the treated groups showed completely normal parenchymatous organs with stimulated lymphatic tissues. It was concluded that all tested previously bee product-immunized rats could significantly challenge the induced S. aureus infection (P<.01). The effects were more pronounced in rats that had received fennel honey solution.

      • REVISITING THE (IN) EFFICIENCY OF EMERGING STOCK MARKETS

        Khaled Elkhal,Ali F Darrat,Tarik M Yousef 사람과세계경영학회 2008 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.13 No.2

Previous evidence on market efficiency in emerging economies could be tainted by the presence of' thin trading and price non-linearity. We examine the impact of' thin trading by decomposing weekly stock returns into permanent and cyclical components and then subject the permanent component (correct index) to a battery of efficiency diagnostic tests: and account for price non-linearity by modeling stock returns in the context of an EGARCH-in-mean Our results from weekly returns in twenty emerging markets are unanimous in rejecting efficiency in all markets after adjustments for thin trading and price non-linearity. We also find evidence that regulatory reforms have enhanced market efficiency but only in some of the sampled markets. implying that emerging markets can benefit from further regulatory changes. Until then. though. several emerging markets remain a potential lucrative source of arbitrage opportunities for international investors
