        Multi-focus Image Fusion Based on Random Walk

        An effective multi-focus image fusion algorithm based on random walk is proposed in this paper. Random walk and guided filter have attracted extensive attention in image fusion. Random walk is usually used to solve probability problems and it has a good smoothing effect, and guided filter can preserve the gradient information of the image well. The combination of two algorithms can better retain the edge information of the input image. Six sets of source images and five existing methods are used in the experiment and the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing methods in both subjective and objective evaluation.

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Herein, electrochemically sluggish polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) is successfully introduced into NiCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> to form hybrids of NiCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> and PCN, in which PCN nanosheets are regarded as a substrate to promote the nucleation and subsequent in-situ growth of NiCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> nanosheets. The surface of as-prepared hybrids are rich in Ni and Co ions in low and high valence state, respectively. In addition, the hybrids exhibit more hydrophilic compared with that of pristine NiCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> due to its higher amounts of hydroxyl group. It has been found that the nitrogen species originated from PCN nanosheets tend to bond with the metal ions and electrolyte used, resulting in tuning the electronic structural states and coupling effects with NiCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> nanosheets.         Synthesis of novel diosgenyl saponin analogues and apoptosis-inducing activity on A549 human lung adenocarcinoma

        <P>We synthesized a diosgenyl saponin bearing a unique disaccharide from the natural product β-hederin, together with twelve glycosylated derivatives and determined their cytotoxicity against five different human cancer cell lines. Most of them showed weak cytotoxicity, with the exception of compound <B>20</B>, diosgenyl α-<SMALL>L</SMALL>-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-[α-<SMALL>L</SMALL>-arabinopyranosyl-(1→4)]-α-<SMALL>L</SMALL>-arabinopyranoside, which exhibited strong cytotoxicity against A549 cells. The cytotoxicity of <B>20</B> was associated with apoptotic cell death, which was characterized by morphological changes, chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation, and phosphatidylserine externalization. Compound <B>20</B> induced apoptosis of A549 cells through a caspase-8-mediated extrinsic pathway and a caspase-9-mediated intrinsic pathway. In addition, phosphorylation of JNK increased but the phosphorylation of ERK decreased after treatment with <B>20</B>.         A New Strategy for Secretory Expression and Mixed Fermentation of Recombinant Human Collagen α1 (III) Chain in Pichia pastoris

        Recombinant human full-length mature collagenα1 (III) chain (rhCOL3A1) was secreted by Pichia pastorisGS115, using the Saccharmyces cerevisiae á-mating factorprepro signal, and the theoretical molecular weight ofrhCOL3A1 was 95.344 kDa. The gene cloned from humanplacenta, was designed and cloned into expression vectorpPIC9K under the control of a strong inducible promoterAOX1.The expression stage of rhCOL3A1 was sensitiveto different carbon ratios through mixed fermentation. LCMS/MS analysis and western blotting demonstrated thatthe recombinant human full-length mature collagen α1(III) gene was successfully expressed in P. pastoris GS115during the methanol induction stage. Furthermore, aneffective strategy of mixed fermentation was established toexpress rhCOL3A1 in shake flash. Compared to singlecarbon induction, when induced with mixed carbon at theration of 0.8 (glycerol/methanol), the time corresponding tothe highest yield of rhCOL3A1 (1.27 g/L) was drasticallyreduced by 50%. The same conclusion was observed fromRT-qPCR. Consequently, a new strategy which was moretime-saving and effective was provided for the large-scaleproducing the full-length mature rhCOL3A1.

        Edge Computing-based Differential Positioning Method for BeiDou Navigation Satellite System

        BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS) is one of the four main types of global navigation satellite systems. The current system has been widely used by the military and by the aerospace, transportation, and marine fields, among others. However, challenges still remain in the BeiDou system, which requires rapid responses for delay-sensitive devices. A differential positioning algorithm called the data center-based differential positioning (DCDP) method is widely used to avoid the influence of errors. In this method, the positioning information of multiple base stations is uploaded to the data center, and the positioning errors are calculated uniformly by the data center based on the minimum variance or a weighted average algorithm. However, the DCDP method has high delay and overload risk. To solve these problems, this paper introduces edge computing to relieve pressure on the data center. Instead of transmitting the positioning information to the data center, a novel method called edge computing-based differential positioning (ECDP) chooses the nearest reference station to perform edge computing and transmits the difference value to the mobile receiver directly. Simulation results and experiments demonstrate that the performance of the ECDP outperforms that of the DCDP method. The delay of the ECDP method is about 500ms less than that of the DCDP method. Moreover, in the range of allowable burst error, the median of the positioning accuracy of the ECDP method is 0.7923m while that of the DCDP method is 0.8028m.

        Transcriptome profiling of PeCRY1 transgenic Populus tomentosa

        Cryptochromes, a class of blue light photoreceptors, play vital roles in regulating growth and development in higher plants. Despite their control over various important traits, there have been few studies focusing on cryptochromes in forest trees to date. In this study, the Euphrates poplar (Populus euphratica) gene PeCRY1 (cryptochrome 1 of Populus euphratica) was isolated and heterologously expressed in Populus tomentosa. Three biological replicates of each of the PeCRY1 transgenic P. tomentosa (CRY1) and wild-type (WT) plants were processed for transcriptome profiling. We found 34792 commonly expressed transcripts among the 93868 detected unigenes. Using R package DESeq, we identified 357 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 132 upregulated and 225 downregulated genes. Gene ontology (GO) enrichment and KEGG pathway enrichment were used to better understand the functions of detected DEGs. Biosynthetic processes, such as starch and sucrose metabolism, which are closely related to growth and development, were highly enriched. Organic cyclic compound biosynthesis was downregulated, whereas carbohydrate metabolism was upregulated. Through KEGG pathway enrichment, we observed that the pentose phosphate pathway, photosynthesis, and circadian rhythm were significantly enriched. Another method of expression analysis based on quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) validated our RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) results.

        Multifunctional nanofiber membrane with anti-ultraviolet and thermal regulation fabricated by coaxial electrospinning

        Ultraviolet radiation is extremely harmful to humans and often occurs in high-temperature weather. Thedevelopment of intelligent textiles based on UV protection and thermal regulation is paramount. In thisresearch, we use coaxial electrospinning technology to prepare anti-ultraviolet smart thermo-regulatingnanofiber membranes. The zinc oxide (ZnO) and octadecane were incorporated into nanofibers with thepolyacrylonitrile (PAN)/ZnO as sheath and the octadecane as core successfully. The composite nanofibershave excellent comprehensive properties, the highest melting enthalpy is 111.38 J/g, and the UPF value is86.21. This multifunctional nanofiber membrane has broad prospects in outdoor products, electroniccomponent protection, and military products.

        Serum metabolomics in mice after paraquat posioning

        Backgrounds: Paraquat is toxic to humans and there is no antidote for paraquat poisoning. Moreover, the mechanisms of paraquat toxicity have not been clearly defined. Methods: In this study, we developed a serum metabolomic method using gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to evaluate the effects of paraquat poisoning on mice. Pattern recognition analysis, including both principal component analysis and cross orthogonal partial least squares-discriminate analysis revealed that paraquat poisoning induced energy/redox cycle and metabolic perturbations. Results: Compared with the control group, the levels of creatinine, citric acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid and glycine in the sub acute paraquat poisoning group increased (P<0.05), while the levels of alpha-Tocopherol, 6-phosphogluconic acid and palmitoleic acid decreased (P<0.05). Conclusion: These findings provide an overview of systematic responses to paraquat exposure and metabolomic insight into the toxicological mechanism of paraquat. Our results demonstrate that the metabolomic method based on GC-MS can be a useful tool to elucidate the mechanism of PQ toxicity, and provide a new direction for its clinical diagnosis and treatment.

      • On-line Rock Fragment Delineation on Simple Thresholding with Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation

        The classification and measurement of rock fragments is very important in mining and construction engineering. The monitoring system acquires and analyses the fragment images from a gravitational falling stream at the end of a moving conveyor belt, and the key function of the system is to construct an image segmentation algorithm. To achieve this goal, an adaptive thresholding algorithm with fuzzy comprehensive evaluation is proposed. Firstly, a grabbed image is roughly segmented by using a global auto-thresholding algorithm. Then each of the objects is measured and analyzed if it includes the multiple fragments touching each other, based on the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method in which the salient fragment features of area, perimeter, shape, gradient magnitude and gray-level flatness are extracted, and for each of the features, the membership function is constructed experimentally. Finally, each of the touching fragment regions, as one image, is auto-thresholded again, and this procedure is repeated until no region can be further separated. The experimental results show that compared to cluster analysis, graph based, and FCM image segmentation algorithms the new algorithm can make image segmentation well for the falling fragments on-line.

        Ginseng berry polysaccharides on inflammation-associated colon cancer: inhibiting T-cell differentiation, promoting apoptosis, and enhancing the effects of 5-fluorouracil

        Background: Ginseng is a commonly used herbal medicine in treating various medical conditions. Chronic gut inflammation is a recognized factor for the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). In this project, Asian ginseng berry polysaccharide preparations were used to assess their effects on CRC and related immune regulation mechanisms. Methods: Ginseng berry polysaccharide extract (GBPE) and purified ginseng berry polysaccharide portion (GBPP) were used to evaluate their activities on human HCT-116 and HT-29 CRC cell proliferation. Interleukin-8 secretion analysis was performed on HT-29 cells. Naive CD4 cell isolation and T-helper cell differentiation were performed and determined using flow cytometry for Th1 and Treg in addition to cell cycle and apoptotic investigation. Results: GBPE and GBPP significantly inhibited interleukin-8 secretion and cancer cell proliferation, inhibited CD4<sup>+</sup>IFN-γ<sup>+</sup> cell (Th1) differentiation, and decreased CD4<sup>+</sup>FoxP3<sup>+</sup> cell (Treg) differentiation. Compared to the GBPE, GBPP showed more potent antiinflammatory activities on the malignant cells. This is consistent with the observation that GBPP can also inhibit Th1-cell differentiation better, suggesting that it has an important role in antiinflammation, whereas Treg cells hinder the body's immune response against malignancies. Supported by cell cycle and apoptosis data, GBPE and GBPP, at various degrees, remarkably enhanced the anticancer activities of 5-fluorouracil. Conclusion: Data from this project suggested that Asian ginseng berry potentially has clinical utility in managing enteric inflammation and suppressing CRC through immunomodulation mechanisms.
