Burned Area Detection After Wildfire Using Landsat 7 ETM+ SLC-off Images
Quoc, Khanh Le,Sy, Tan Nguyen,Nhat, Thanh Nguyen Thi,Thanh, Ha Le The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2013 IEIE Transactions on Smart Processing & Computing Vol.2 No.3
The increasing demand for monitoring wildfires and their impact on the land surface have prompted studies of burned area extraction and analysis. To differentiate burned and unburned area, the earlier method of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) Burned Area Detection Algorithm was proposed to estimate the change in land surface based on the reflectance energy. The energy, whose wavelengths are sensitive to burning, was selected to calculate the change parameter $Z_{score}$. This method was applied using the MODIS images to produce a MODIS Burned Area product. The approach was to simplify this algorithm to make it compatible with the Landsat 7 ETM+ SLC-off images. To extract the refined version of burned regions, post-processing was carried out by applying a median filter, dilation morphology algorithm, and finally a gap filling method. The experimental results showed that the detailed burned areas extracted from the proposed method exhibited more spatial details than those of the MODIS Burned products in the large U.S areas. The results also revealed the discontinuous distribution of burned regions in Vietnam forests.
BrainyEdge: An AI-enabled framework for IoT edge computing
Kim-Hung Le,Khanh-Hoi Le-Minh,Huy-Tan Thai 한국통신학회 2023 ICT Express Vol.9 No.2
Along with the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the surge in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), Edge Computing has proved considerable success in reducing latency, network traffic consumption, and security risks. The convergence of AI and Edge Computing, emerging a brand-new paradigm called edge intelligence, has been expected to unleash the full potential of intelligent IoT services. Unfortunately, integrating AI and Edge Computing into IoT is highly challenging due to the concerns over IoT device performance, energy efficiency, and privacy. In this paper, we present brainyEdge, an AI-enabled framework for edge devices able to jointly satisfy the Quality of Experience (QoE) criteria of IoT applications. We enhanced the intelligence of AI models operating at edges by designing a learning procedure consisting of transfer learning and incremental learning to dynamically retrain the models with personalized and incremental data locally stored. These data are classified into private data permanently stored in edges and public data shared in the cloud. This increases the edge-cloud collaboration level while preserving data privacy. To minimize the network cost of deploying the models to edge devices, we developed a lightweight deployment paradigm supporting cloud-compression and edge-decompression based on a user-desired compression ratio. Our prototype-based evaluation results indicate the superiority of brainyEdge over a typical edge-cloud paradigm.

Strongyloidiasis, a chronic helminth infection caused by the parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, has various clinical manifestations. Although rare, duodenal obstructions and venous thromboembolism are possible complications of strongyloidiasis. This paper presents the case of a 47-year-old Vietnamese male with a history of right lower limb edema, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort lasting for four months. Venous Doppler ultrasound detected a thrombus in the right femoral vein, while an abdominal CT scan revealed a mass lesion suggestive of a lower bile duct tumor. Esophageogastroduodenoscopy showed a friable duodenal cap mucosa with multiple ulcers and edematous mucosa of the second part of the duodenum that caused a partial lumen obstruction. The final histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed chronic duodenitis with larvae consistent with Strongyloides stercoralis. The patient was treated with Ivermectin for two weeks and anticoagulation therapy for three months. After treatment and a six-month follow-up, the patient's gastrointestinal symptoms and leg swelling resolved completely. This is the first documented case of a patient in Vietnam with strongyloidiasis who presented with venous thromboembolism and duodenal obstruction.

In vitro conservation is one of the most effective strategies for rare plant protection, especially for orchid species. To maximize the success rates of in vitro explant establishment (stage I) in conservation programs, the application of tissue culture additives such as Plant Preservative MixtureTM (PPMTM) should be emphasized. In this study, we used Dendrobium thyrsiflorum Rchb.f. (1875) seeds and seedlings as a model for the evaluation of PPMTM’s phyto- toxicity in the meristematic tissues of epiphytic orchids. PPMTM had no observable inhibitory effect on protocorm, shoot, or root development when it was supplemented at 0.1%. PPMTM supplementation caused adverse effects on D. thyrsiflorum explants at concentrations > 0.2%. At high concentrations, young in vitro seedlings showed damage, especially at the root tissue level. Based on this model, supplementation of 0.1-0.2% PPMTM to culture media was successfully implemented to establish in vitro cultures of other rare orchid species in our conservation program.
