Residential Development and Hierarchical Governance: Multifamily Housing and Multilevel Analysis
( Sang Chul Park ),( Chang Gyu Kwak ),( Sung Wook Kwon ) 서울대학교 행정대학원 2012 Journal of Policy Studies Vol.27 No.2
This study investigates factors that influence multifamily housing zoning from a hierarchical governance perspective. Local zoning is a product of interactive processes among various stakeholders and of local politics. Since local zoning represents community interests in land development and has an exclusionary characteristic, multifamily housing zoning is controversial in some localities, We hypothesize that a hierarchical governance structure influences the supply of local multifamily housing zoning, The result of a hierarchical generalized linear model shows evidence that state smart growth reform and state intervention in local land use are positively associated with the establishment of local multifamily housing zoning. The decisions are also affected by local factors such as the supply of land, density restrictions, cost of new infrastructure, and city budget constraints. This study concludes that state authority and smart growth reform make it possible for local governments to commit to multifamily housing zoning to achieve housing affordability and high-density development.
Multi-Point Aerodynamic Shape Optimization of Rotor Blades Using Unstructured Meshes
Sang Wook Lee,Oh Joon Kwon 한국항공우주학회 2007 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.8 No.1
A multi-point aerodynamic shape optimization technique has been developed for helicopter rotor blades in hover based on a continuous adjoint method on unstructured meshes. The Euler flow solver and the continuous adjoint sensitivity analysis were formulated on the rotating frame of reference. The 'objective function and the sensitivity were obtained as a weighted sum of the values at each design point. The blade section contour was modified by using the Hicks-Henne shape functions. The mesh movement due to the blade geometry change was achieved by using a spring analogy. In order to handle the repeated evaluation of the design cycle efficiently, the flow and adjoint solvers were parallelized based on a domain decomposition strategy. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique was adopted for the accurate capturing of the wake. Applications were made to the aerodynamic shape optimization of the Caradonna-Tung rotor blades and the UH-60 rotor blades in hover.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the validity of using cannulated screws as a method for predicting avascular necrosis of the femoral head after a fixation of fractures in patients with femoral neck fractures. Materials and Methods: Between March 1999 and January 2001, 44 patients with a femoral neck fracture that had been fixed with cannulated screws were enrolled in this study. The follow up period was more than 25 months and the mean age of the patients was 51 years (range, 18 to 76 year). Blood drainage in the holes of the screw head was checked. There were 38 cases in the bleeding group, and 6 cases in the non-bleeding group. The development of head necrosis was evaluated using plain radiography. The validity of the relationship between the two groups and head necrosis was evaluated by the sensitivity, specificity, the positive predictive value, and the negative predictive value. Results: An avascular necrosis of the femoral head developed in 7 cases (16%). Only one of the 38 patients in the bleeding group developed head necrosis (2.6%). However, all those in the non-bleeding group developed head necrosis (100%). The sensitivity was 86%, the specificity was 100%, the positive predictive value was 100%, and the negative predictive value was 97%. Conclusion: Bleeding from holes in the cannulated screws is a simple and accurate perfusion assessment for predicting the development of an avascular necrosis of the femoral head after a femoral neck fracture.

The fluorescence of norfloxacin was quenched by various nucleotides. The ratio of the fluorescence intensities in the absence and presence of nucleotide was linearly dependent on nucleotide concentration, suggesting that quenching occurred through the formation of nonfluorescent norfloxacin-nucleotide complexes. The gradient of the linear relationship represented the equilibrium constant of complex formation; it decreased with increasing temperature. The slopes of van't Hoff plots constructed from the temperature-dependent equilibrium constants were positive in all cases, indicating that complex formation was energetically favorable - i.e., exothermic, with negative Gibb's free energy. The equilibrium constant increased when triphosphate was used instead of monophosphate. It also increased when the oxygen at the $C'_2$ position of the nucleotide was removed. Both enhancements were due to entropic effects: entropy decreased when complexes with AMP or GMP formed, while it increased when norfloxacin complexed with ATP, GTP, dAMP and dGMP.

Background/Aims: Self-expandable metal stents (SEMSs) can be applied to relieve colorectal obstruction secondary to incurable primary colorectal cancer or extracolonic malignancy. We aimed to identify factors associated with clinical success and the reintervention-free survival (RFS) after palliative stenting. Methods: Cases of palliative SEMS placement between 2005 and 2019 were retrieved from the institutional database and reviewed retrospectively. Logistic regression and log-rank testing followed by Cox proportional hazard analyses were performed to investigate the predictors of the clinical success of palliative stenting and factors associated with RFS, respectively. Results: A total of 593 patients underwent palliative stenting for malignant colonic obstruction (MCO). The technical and clinical success rates were 92.9% and 83.5%, respectively. Peritoneal carcinomatosis was a predictor of clinical failure (odds ratio, 0.33; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.17 to 0.65) in the multivariate analysis. Peritoneal carcinomatosis (hazard ratio [HR], 2.48; 95% CI, 1.69 to 3.64) and stent expansion >90% on day 1 (HR, 1.62; 95% CI, 1.05 to 2.50) were associated with a shorter RFS. Neither clinical success nor RFS was associated with extracolonic malignancy. Re-obstruction, stent migration, and perforation were responsible for most reinterventions after clinically successful palliative stenting. Conclusions: In patients requiring palliative stenting for MCO, peritoneal carcinomatosis was associated with both clinical failure and short RFS. Stent expansion >90% on postprocedural day 1 was another predictor of a short RFS after clinically successful stenting. A large prospective study is warranted to establish factors associated with RFS after successful palliative stenting for MCO. (Gut Liver 2021;15:579-587)

While economic development and affordable housing are two important goals for city governments, balancing both values is challenging because they have conflicting policy natures that are not easily harmonized. According to Peterson (1981), cities inherently focus on economic development policy and tend to pay less attention to redistribution policy. In this study, we examine if cities pursue both economic development and affordable housing simultaneously. More specifically, we investigate whether cities support affordable housing to promote their key interest of economic development. In addressing this research question, we investigate the influence of state growth management policies and urban political institutions by using a 2009 leMA Economic Development survey. Preliminary results indicate that state growth management policies are a critical factor that assist city governments attempting to balance affordable housing and economic development, while form of government is not significant.

This study was designed to find the most suitable method and wall material for microencapsulation of the Lactobacillus plantarum to maintain cell viability in different environmental conditions. To improve the stability of L. plantarum, we developed an encapsulation system of L. plantarum, using water-in-oil emulsion system. For the encapsulation of L. plantarum, corn starch and glyceryl monostearate were selected to form gel beads. Then 10% (w/v) of starch was gelatinized by autoclaving to transit gel state, and cooled down at 60ºC and mixed with L. plantarum to encapsulate it. The encapsulated L. plantarum was tested for the tolerance of acidic conditions at different temperatures to investigate the encapsulation ability. The study indicated that the survival rate of the microencapsulated cells in starch matrix was significantly higher than that of free cells in low pH conditions with relatively higher temperature. The results showed that corn starch as a wall material and glycerol monostearate as a gelling agent in encapsulation could play a role in the viability of lactic acid bacteria in extreme conditions. Using the current study, it would be possible to formulate a new water-in-oil system as applied in the protection of L. plantarum from the gastric conditions for the encapsulation system used in chicken feed industry.
