Fabrication of Well-Ordered, Anodic Aluminum Oxide Membrane Using Hybrid Anodization

<P>Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) is one of the most favorable candidates for fabrication of nano-meshed membrane for various applications due to its controllable pore size and self-ordered structure. The mechanism of AAO membrane is a simple and has been studied by many research groups, however the actual fabrication of membrane has several difficulties owing to its sensitivity of ordering, long anodizing time and unclearness of the pore. In this work, we have demonstrated enhanced process of fabrication symmetric AAO membrane by using 'hybrid anodizing' (Hyb-A) method which include mild anodization (MA) followed by hard anodization (HA). This Hyb-A process can give highly ordered membrane with more vivid pore than two-step anodizing process. HA was implemented on the Al plate which has been already textured by MA for more ordered structure and HA plays a key role for formation of more obvious pore in Hyb-A. Our experimental results indicate that Hyb-A with proper process sequence would be one of the fast and useful fabrication methods for the AAO membrane.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Objectives</B></P> <P>The central auditory pathway matures through sensory experiences and it is known that sensory experiences during periods called critical periods exert an important influence on brain development. The present study aimed to investigate whether temporary auditory deprivation during critical periods (CPs) could have a detrimental effect on the development of auditory temporal processing.</P> <P><B>Materials and methods</B></P> <P>Twelve neonatal rats were randomly assigned to control and study groups; Study group experienced temporary (18–20 days) auditory deprivation during CPs (Early deprivation study group). Outcome measures included changes in auditory brainstem response (ABR), gap prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex (GPIAS), and gap detection threshold (GDT). To further delineate the specific role of CPs in the outcome measures above, the same paradigm was applied in adult rats (Late deprivation group) and the findings were compared with those of the neonatal rats.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>Soon after the restoration of hearing, early deprivation study animals showed a significantly lower GPIAS at intermediate gap durations and a larger GDT than early deprivation controls, but these differences became insignificant after subsequent auditory inputs. Additionally, the ABR results showed significantly delayed latencies of waves IV, V, and interpeak latencies of wave I-III and wave I-V in study group. Late deprivation group didn't exhibit any deterioration in temporal processing following sensory deprivation.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>Taken together, the present results suggest that transient auditory deprivation during CPs might cause reversible disruptions in the development of temporal processing.</P>
Consistency of the Optimized Bandwidth in Filter-based Fatigue Index

In this study, we evaluated the cut-off frequency of the filter-based fatigue index using surface electromyography (EMG) signals from different upper and lower extremity muscles under different exercise conditions. Twenty seven subjects participated in isotonic knee extension exercises, fourteen subjects in isotonic elbow flexion and isokinetic knee extension exercises, and twenty subjects in isometric knee extension, isotonic ankle dorsiflexion, and isotonic elbow extension exercises. EMG signals were obtained from right rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), biceps brachii (BB), triceps brachii (TC), and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles during exercises. The filter-based fatigue index was compared with sEMG-based fatigue indices such as mean root-mean-square (RMS) values, median frequency, Dimitrov spectral index, and Gonzalez-Izal wavelet index. Results showed that optimized cut-off values for all muscles and all exercises approximated to 350 Hz. This implies that the cut-off frequency of 350 Hz is appropriate for general use, showing better determination coefficient with biomechanical fatigues such as joint torques and powers than the other fatigue indices in different muscles during different exercises.
Development of therapeutic technology through analysis of growth factor of myoma

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the level of expression of various growth factors in myoma and to investigate the effect of growth factor inhibitor and to compare the effect of conventional regimens. Methods: The expression levels of growth factors in normal myometrium and myoma were compared by immunohistochemical staining. After primary culture of normal myometrial cells and myoma cells, cell viability was confirmed by treatment with 100 nM Ulipristal acetate (UPA) and Mifepristone (RU486) for 48 hours. Western blot analysis was performed to determine the protein expression of each of these growth factors. Cell viability was determined by treatment with 10uM TGF inhibitor(LY364947) and 5uM VEGF inhibitor(Axitinib) for 24 hours in cultured normal myometrial cells and myoma cells. Results: Immunohistochemical staining revealed that TGF expression was 20% in normal myometrium and 60% in myoma. VEGF expression was 1% in normal myometrium and 16% in myoma respectively. Cell viability was the most significant decrease with 58.59% mifepristone treatment in myoma tissue, and 57.20% in normal myometrium with UPA treatment. In the protein expression, EGF was significantly increased by 80% and IGF was significantly increased by 250% when UPA treated to normal myometrial cells. The expression of VEGF was decreased by 70% when Mifepristone treated to myoma cells. In normal myometrial cell, cell viability was significantly decreased by 60% of the TGF inhibitor treated cells and by 70% of the VEGF inhibitor treated cells. Cell viability of myoma cells was significantly decreased by 27.69% treated with TGF inhibitor and 27.34% treated with VEGF inhibitor. Conclusion: In myoma, TGF was the most expressed among the various growth factors, and VEGF was next increased to be expressed. The administration of inhibitor significantly inhibited the growth of myoma cells, and the suppressive effect was significantly greater than that of conventional drug therapy.

Aims: PAGE-B is a validated simple score, made of age, sex and platelet count, that can help predict the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among chronic hepatitis B patients on antiviral therapy. Yet, PAGE-B score encompass patients at intermediate risk, and requires cross-validation from Asian countries. We tested usefulness of PAGE-B score among chronic hepatitis B patients on entecavir therapy. We also tested whether performance of PAGE-B score can be improved by adding albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade. Methods: A total of 894 treatment-naïve, chronic hepatitis B patients, who started entecavir therapy between January 2007 and June 2012 were analyzed. The virological parameters and biochemical laboratory data including platelet, albumin, bilirubin for calculation of ALBI and PAGE scores were measured at baseline and at 1 year of entecavir therapy. Results: During a median 5.6 years of follow-up (range: 1.0 - 10.2 years), HCC was diagnosed in 100 patients (11.2%). The ALBI and PAGE score both at baseline and at year 1, respectively, were associated with development of HCC. After 1 year of entecavir therapy, the ALBI score improved (median: -2.69 to -2.96, P<0.001), whereas PAGE-B score did not (median: 14 to 14.5, P=0.619). Combination of ALBI and PAGE-B score showed the highest areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) for the prediction of HCC development at 3 and 5 years, at baseline and at year 1, respectively, compared with ALBI and PAGE-B alone. Especially, the ALBI grade was able to further classify patient with intermediate risk according to PAGE grade at baseline and year 1, respectively. Conclusions: The use of ALBI score and PAGE-B score in combination, compared to their solitary use, was more effective in predicting HCC risk for chronic hepatitis B patients on entecavir therapy. Performance of PAGE-B score can be improved by simply adding ALBI score.
The epidemiology and clinical features of hidradenitis suppurativa in Korean patients

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin appendage and occurs in 1-4% of the whole population in the Western countries. However, there are few studies on the prevalence of HS in Asia. The clinical characteristics, response to treatment, and prognosis of Korean patients are not well known. Objectives: To investigate epidemiology and clinical features such as severity, risk factors, comorbidities, treatment response, and prognosis of HS patients in Korea through multicenter study. Methods: Fourteen hospitals and the Korean Society for Acne Research participated in this multicenter study. A retrospective chart review was conducted for HS patients who had visited the hospitals during the period from May 1, 2007 to April 30, 2017. Results: More than 300 patients were enrolled in this study. The age and sex distribution of the disease was investigated, and the demographic characteristics were found. The following clinical features were also collected: Body mass index (BMI), smoking history, comorbidities, family history, site of disease involvement, severity of disease, treatment method, response to treatment. Conclusion: These results provide important basic data for the clinical characterization of Korean HS. Also, it can help to broaden social awareness and understanding of HS.
