In vitro Study on the Antimicrobial Activity of Human Tears with Respect to Age

        Zahoor, Muhammad,Bahadar, Haji,Ayaz, Muhammad,Khan, Ajmal,Shah, Muhammad Jalat Korean Society for Clinical Laboratory Science 2018 대한임상검사과학회지(KJCLS) Vol.50 No.2

Lysozyme is present in tears and has the ability to inhibit bacterial growth. In addition, it acts as a physiological scavenger for harmful substances. In the present study, sixteen tear samples from people of different ages were evaluated for their antibacterial spectrum against selected bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Shigella sonnei, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica Typhi). A radial diffusion assay was used to evaluate the antibacterial potential of tear samples. To correlate the antibacterial activities of these tear samples, the concentration of lysozyme in the tear samples was also determined. Ampicillin was used as a standard drug. The zone of inhibition (mm) was used to measure the antibacterial property of the tears. All samples showed good antibacterial activities. The tear samples of children showed antibacterial activities in the range of 4.40~5.00 mm inhibition zones against the selected bacterial strains. The tear samples from the young and adults showed good antibacterial potential with a zone of inhibition in the range of 3.20~4.00 and 4.00~5.50 mm, respectively. The tear samples from the old age group showed inhibition zones from 1.50~5 mm. The adult tear samples showed the maximum inhibition against the selected bacterial strains among all groups. The lysozyme concentration was 1.7 mg/mL, 1.95 mg/mL, 2.13 mg/mL, and 1.76 mg/mL for children, young, adults, and elderly, respectively. In conclusion, the tears from adults have the high inhibition potential. In addition, this data also showed that the lysozyme contents in the tear sample increased with age until 40~42 years.

Folic acid supplementation regulates key immunity-associated genes and pathways during the periparturient period in dairy cows

        Khan Muhammad Zahoor,Zhang Zhichao,Liu Lei,Wang Di,Mi Siyuan,Liu Xueqin,Liu Gang,Guo Gang,Li Xizhi,Wang Yachun,Yu Ying 아세아·태평양축산학회 2020 Animal Bioscience Vol.33 No.9

Objective: The current research was aimed to profile the transcriptomic picture of the peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) associated with immunity in Chinese Holsteins supplemented orally with coated folic acid during the periparturient period. Methods: The total of 123 perinatal cows were selected for this study and divided into three groups; group A (n = 41, 240 mg/500 kg cow/d), group B (n = 40, 120 mg/500 kg cow/d) and group C (n = 42, 0 mg/cow/d) based on the quantity of folic acid fed. Three samples of PBLs were selected from each folic acid treated group (high, low, and control) and RNA sequencing method was carried out for transcriptomic analysis. Results: The analysis revealed that a higher number of genes and pathways were regulated in response to high and low folic acid supplementation compared to the controls. We reported the novel pathways tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling, antigen processing and presentation, Staphylococcus aureus infection and nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B signaling pathways) and the key genes (e.g. C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10, TNF receptor superfamily member 1A, cluster difference 4, major histocompatibility complex, class II, DQ beta, NF-kappa-B inhibitor alpha, and TNF superfamily 13) having great importance in immunity and anti-inflammation in the periparturient cows in response to coated folic acid treatment. Conclusion: Collectively, our study profiled first-time transcriptomic analysis of bovine lymphocytes and compared the involved cytokines, genes, and pathways between high vs control and low vs control. Our data suggest that the low folic acid supplementation (120 mg/500 kg) could be a good choice to boost appropriate immunity and anti-inflammation as well as might being applied to the health improvement of perinatal dairy cows.

A Secure Method for Color Image Steganography using Gray-Level Modification and Multi-level Encryption

( Khan Muhammad ),( Jamil Ahmad ),( Haleem Farman ),( Zahoor Jan ),( Muhammad Sajjad ),( Sung Wook Baik ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2015 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.9 No.5

Security of information during transmission is a major issue in this modern era. All of the communicating bodies want confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of their secret information. Researchers have presented various schemes to cope with these Internet security issues. In this context, both steganography and cryptography can be used effectively. However, major limitation in the existing steganographic methods is the low-quality output stego images, which consequently results in the lack of security. To cope with these issues, we present an efficient method for RGB images based on gray level modification (GLM) and multi-level encryption (MLE). The secret key and secret data is encrypted using MLE algorithm before mapping it to the grey-levels of the cover image. Then, a transposition function is applied on cover image prior to data hiding. The usage of transpose, secret key, MLE, and GLM adds four different levels of security to the proposed algorithm, making it very difficult for a malicious user to extract the original secret information. The proposed method is evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively. The experimental results, compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, show that the proposed algorithm not only enhances the quality of stego images but also provides multiple levels of security, which can significantly misguide image steganalysis and makes the attack on this algorithm more challenging.

      • Grey wolf optimization based clustering algorithm for vehicular ad-hoc networks

        Fahad, Muhammad,Aadil, Farhan,Rehman, Zahoor-ur-,Khan, Salabat,Shah, Peer Azmat,Muhammad, Khan,Lloret, Jaime,Wang, Haoxiang,Lee, Jong Weon,Mehmood, Irfan Elsevier 2018 Computers & electrical engineering Vol.70 No.-

<P>In vehicular ad-hoc network (VANETs), frequent topology changes occur due to fast moving nature of mobile nodes. This random topology creates instability that leads to scalability issues. To overcome this problem, clustering can be performed. Existing approaches for clustering in VANETs generate large number of cluster-heads which utilize the scarce wireless resources resulting in degraded performance. In this article, grey wolf optimization based clustering algorithm for VANETs is proposed, that replicates the social behaviour and hunting mechanism of grey wolfs for creating efficient clusters. The linearly decreasing factor of grey wolf nature enforces to converge earlier, which provides the optimized number of clusters. The proposed method is compared with well-known meta-heuristics from literature and results show that it provides optimal outcomes that lead to a robust routing protocol for clustering of VANETs, which is appropriate for highways and can accomplish quality communication, confirming reliable delivery of information to each vehicle. Effect of crosslinker feed content on catalaytic activity of silver nanoparticles fabricated in multiresponsive microgels

        Zahoor Hussain Farooqi,Shanza Rauf Khan,Tajamal Hussain,Robina Begum,Kiran Ejaz,Shumaila Majeed,Muhammad Ajmal,Farah Kanwal,Mohammad Siddiq 한국화학공학회 2014 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.31 No.9

We investigated the effect of crosslinking density of poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) micro-gels on catalytic activity of silver nanoparticles fabricated hybrid microgels. Multiresponsive poly(N-isopropyl acryla-mide-co-acrylic acid) microgels with 2, 4, 6 and 8 mole percentage of N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide were synthesizedby emulsion polymerization. These microgels were characterized by dynamic light scattering and were used as mi-croreactors to synthesize silver nanoparticles. Hybrid system was characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Thecatalytic activity of hybrid microgels with different crosslinker content was compared by studying the reduction of p-nitrophenol as a model reaction. Kinetics of reaction was monitored by spectrophotometry. The value of the apparentrate constant decreases from 0.568 to 0.313 min−1, when content of crosslinker are increased from 2 to 8 mole percent-age respectively. This decreases in value of apparent rate constant is due to increase in diffusional barrier offered byhigh crosslinking of polymer network at high mole percentages of N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide.

Variation in Milk Fatty Acid Composition with Body Condition in Dairy Buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

Qureshi, Muhammad Subhan,Mushtaq, Anila,Khan, Sarzamin,Habib, Ghulam,Swati, Zahoor Ahmad Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2010 Animal Bioscience Vol.23 No.3

Buffaloes usually maintain higher body condition and do not produce milk at the cost of their own body reserves under tropical conditions. The mobilization of body reserves for fulfilling the demands of lactation has been extensively studied in dairy cows while limited work is available on this aspect in dairy buffaloes. Therefore, the present study was conducted to examine variations in milk fatty acid profiles with body condition in Nili-Ravi buffaloes. A total of 24 Nili-Ravi buffaloes within 60 days after parturition, were selected from a private dairy farm in the district of Peshawar. All animals consumed the same diet during the experimental period. A total of 576 raw milk samples were collected for laboratory analysis. The study continued up to 6 months during 2008. Body condition score (BCS), milk yield and composition were recorded once a week. Means for milk fatty acid profile were compared for various levels of BCS. The mean milk yield and fat content were 9.28 kg/d and 5.36%, respectively. The total saturated fatty acids (SFA) were 64.22 g/100 g and the unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) were 35.79 g/100 g. Of the SFA the highest amount was recorded for $C_{16:0}$, followed by $C_{18:0}$, and $C_{14:0}$. The total sum of hypercholesterolemic fatty acids (HCFA, $C_{12:0}$, $C_{14:0}$ and $C_{16:0}$) was 43.33 g/100 g. The concentrations of UFA were greater for moderate BCS followed by poor and highest BCS while SFA showed the opposite trend. The correlation analysis showed that milk yield was negatively affected by BCS and milk fat positively affected, though non-significantly. The present study suggests that Nili-Ravi dairy buffaloes produce similar milk to dairy cows regarding availability of cardioprotective fatty acids, with the highest concentration of $C_{18:1\;cis-9}$. Two HCFA ($C_{12:0}$ and $C_{14:0}$) were associated with higher body condition. Buffaloes with moderate body condition yielded milk containing healthier fatty acids.

Polyimide molecular composites containing a stiff-chain polymer derived from 1,5-diaminonaphathalene and pyromellitic dianhydride

        Khalil, Muhammad,Ha, Chang-Sik,Saeed, Shaukat,Khan, Irum Majeed,Ahmad, Zahoor Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2010 Polymer Composites Vol.31 No.4

<P>Polyimide molecular composite (MC) films were prepared by embedding a stiff-chain polyimide (PIS) in the ductile matrix of a flexible-chain polyimide (PIF) by blending their respective poly(amic acid) precursor solutions, followed by casting, drying, and thermal imidization upto 300°C. The PIS was prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 1,5-diaminonaphathalene (DAN), whereas the PIF was prepared from the same dianhydride and 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA). Transparent, tough, and creasable MC films were obtained with 2.5–40 wt% of PIS content. The disruption of crystalline order of PIS in the MC films evidenced its fine dispersion in the matrix. Visco-elastic measurements showed a single and enhanced value of the glass transition temperature for MC films indicating miscibility of this polyimide pair. Furthermore, the variation of charge transfer (CT) fluorescence intensity with the PIS content in the blends verified complete miscibility upto 30 wt% of PIS loading. These MCs showed a notable enhancement in the mechanical properties. Among all, the blend containing 30 wt% of stiff-chain molecules gave the best combination of properties when compared with the matrix polyimide: a 50% higher value of tensile modulus, a 17°C rise in the glass transition temperature, and better thermal stability.
