        The purpose of this study is to examine background and characteristics of integrated rural development policy facing localization ages and to find out the effective ways for integrated rural development planning responding local settlement development and local autonomy. For this study, the case of Kyongsan region development planning was adopted. Policy issues were summarized as follows : 1. Endeavours for self-reliant regional development should be region-wide. Especially, residents, local government, local council, and local group concerned should be integrated through mutual cooperation. 2. Policy processes, including policy agend setting, policy making, policy implementation, policy evalution, should be opened to the public and should be institutionalized with the arrangement of participation of residents and experts. 3. Institutional arrangement should be made to compensate for scarce resources for regional development.

        The purpose of this study is to establish the integrated rural development plan based on the consciousness and development need of inhabitants in Youngchen Gun. Youngchen Gun is located near metropolitan Taegu city. It is a satellite town of Taegu. In the future it will become an industrial, educational center in a gardenlike environment. Youngchen Gun is an area having high level of the settlement consciousness in comparison with the other counties in Kyngsang Buk Do, but it has as ever the structural problem of rural. Obtained results of this study are as follows : 1. In a section of regional settlement consciousness, it is needed to establish the well organized settlement system. 2. In a section of zone of life, it is necessary to expand a marketing route for inhabitants. 3. In a section of agricultural industry, it is needed to expand the facilities for circulation, to improve an income crops and mechanize an agriculture. 4. In a section of residence, it is needed to expand the facilities of life benefit and enlarge housing lands. 5. In a section of transportation, it is needed to extend all sort of roads and traffic facilities. 6. In a section of education, it is necessary to elevate the qualities of education and modernize the education facilities. 7. In a section of medical service, it is needed to increase the medical specialist and expand medical facilities. 8. In a section of cultural service and welfare, it is necessary to establish and increase cultural and welfare facilities.

      • Development of three-axis actuator for HD-DVD

        There is much research being conducted on developing information storage devices based on formats of Blu-ray Disc (BD) and HD-DVD with requirements for high-density storage devices. This trend is set toward the use of a short-wave length laser and objective lens (OL) with high numerical aperture in optical storage devices. However, it causes the rapid decrease of tilt margin. Therefore, it is necessary that an actuator control tilt motion and have fast access time to get a stable signal. In this paper, a mathematical form of a three-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) coupled model was formulated and magnetic circuit in mechanical constraints was efficiently designed through at trial-and-error method using electromagnetic (EM) analysis. Finally, in order to have fast access time, a three-axis actuator whose rotational center is put on a lens center through redesign of tilting magnetic circuit was suggested. This design targets were evaluated by experiments.

      • Molecular design, synthesis, and properties of Y-type nonlinear optical polyester containing tricyanovinylthiophene with enhanced thermal stability of second harmonic generation

        <P>1-{3,4-Di-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl}-2-(2-thiophenyl)ethene (5) was prepared and condensed with terephthaloyl chloride to yield polyester (6). Polymer 6 was reacted with tetracyanoethylene to give a new Y-type polyester (7) containing 1-(3,4-dioxyethoxy)phenyl-2-{5-(2,2,3-tricyanovinyl)-2-thiophenyl)}ethenyl groups as NLO-chromophores, which are components of the polymer backbones. Polyester 7 is soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide and acetone. Polymer 7 showed a thermal stability up to 300 °C in thermogravimetric analysis with glass transition temperature (T<SUB>g</SUB>) obtained from differential scanning calorimetry near 126 °C. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient (d<SUB>33</SUB>) of poled polymer film at the 1560 nm fundamental wavelength was around 6.57 × 10<SUP>−9</SUP> esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability up to the T<SUB>g</SUB>, and there was no SHG decay below 125 °C due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.         The Glu/Asp Polymorphism of ecNOS Gene and the Renal Progression in Korean Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) Patients

        Two genetic loci, PKD1 and PKD2, have been identified as being responsible for ADPKD, but the presence of an intrafamilial clinical diversity suggests that there are disease-modifying loci. We studied the associations between polymorphism in the ecNOS gene, which are known to be associated with chronic tubulointerstitial and vascular changes, and ADPKD progression in Korean patients. A total of 112 individuals who had ADPKD and 41 normal control subjects were genotyped by PCR-RFLP, the Glu298Asp variant of ecNOS gene was discriminated with MboI. The distribution of the alleles for the ecNOS Glu298Asp polymorphism in ADPKD was: G 88 %, T 12 %, which was similar to the result of Korean population (95:5, p = 0.128) but different from Western controls (65:35, p = 0.000). No differences were found between the CRF and the non-CRF groups (p = 1.000) or the early hypertension and the normotension groups (p = 1.000). In conclusion, our results suggest that the polymorphism at Glu298Asp of ecNOS has no association with the renal progression in Korean ADPKD patients.

        한국인 ADPKD 환자에서의 TGF-β1 Gene Leader Sequence 유전자 다형성의 분포 및 임상경과와의 연관성

        목 적 : 상염색체우성다낭신(ADPKD) 환자에서 가계간·가계내의 임상양상의 심한 차이는 원인유전자 돌연변이 외에 modifying gene의 존재를 시사한다. 본 연구는 한국인 ADPKD 환자에서 TGF-β1 유전자 다형성의 분포와 고혈압, 신부전 등 임상상과의 연관성을 알아보고자 하였다. 방 법 : 정상 성인 47명과 ADPKD 환자 114명을 대상으로 TGF-β1 g ene leader sequence에 대한 PCR 시행한 후 제한효소 MspA 1I, Bg lI로 각각 처리하여 T 869C(Leu 10Pro)과 G915C(Arg25Pro)의 다형성을 보았다. 신부전, 고혈압 발생과의 연관성을 검정하였다. 결 과 : 각 유전자군의 비율은 Hardy -Weinberg 등식에 부합하였으며, TGF - β1의 BglI 처리결과는 125명 모두 GG형으로 서구인과 차이를 보였다(G : C=90 : 10). T GF - β1의 MspA1I 처리결과 정상인에서의 T : C allele의 빈도(56 : 44)는 서구인(65 : 35)과 차이를 보이지 않았으며, 총 PKD 환자군의 빈도(52 : 48)와도 통계적 차이를 보이지 않았다(p=0.670). PKD 환자군을 말기신부전 및 조기 고혈압 발생에 따라 나누었을 때 T : C allele 빈도의 차이는 없었다(p=0.571, p=0.252). 결 론 : 한국인 ADPKD 환자에서 TGF - β1 leader sequence 유전자 다형성과 임상경과 간에 유의한 관련은 없었고, 이는 싸이토카인의 유전적 차이보다는 물리적 요인 등 이차적인 원인에 의해 신조직 섬유화가 진행하는 것을 시사한다. Background : Two genetic loci, PKD1 and PKD2, have been identified as being responsible for ADPKD, and PKD1 is known to be associated with poor prognosis. However, the presence of intrafamilial clinical diversity suggests the presence of disease-modifying loci. Because the mechanism of renal failure in ADPKD includes cystic growth and tubulointerstitial atrophy and fibrosis, we studied the associations between two cytokine gene polymorphisms in the TGF-β1 gene, which are known to be related with chronic tubulointerstitial inflammation, and ADPKD progression in Korean patients. Methods : 47 normal controls and 114 individuals with ADPKD were genotyped by PCR-RFLP, and the TGF-β1 gene leader sequence of T 869C(Leu10-Pro) variant was compared with M spA 1I and G915C (Arg25Pro) with B glI. Statistic significances were determined using the Chi-square test. Results : The distribution of alleles for the T GF-β1 Leu10Pro polymorphism in ADPKD was : T 52%, C 48%, which w as similar to the Korean (56 : 44, p=0.670) and Western controls (65 : 35), and in addition, no differences were found between the CRF and the non-CRF groups (p=0.571) or the early hypertension and the normotension groups (p=0.252). T he distribution of alleles for the TGF-β1 Arg25Pro polymorphism was all GG type, which w as different from Western controls (90 : 10, p=0.000). Conclusion : Our results suggest that the polymorphism at Arg25Pro of TGF-β1 in Korean population has different allele distribution from Western, and the polymorphism at Leu10Pro of TGF-β1 has no association with the renal progression of Korean ADPKD patients.

        Preparation and Properties of A Novel Y-type Nonlinear Optical Polyester with Dioxybenzylidenecyanoacetate Groups

        Methyl 2,4-di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)benzylidenecyanoacetate (3) was prepared and polymerized with terephthaloyl chloride to yield a novel Y-type polyester 4 containing 2,4-dioxybenzylidenecyanoacetate groups as NLOchromophores, which constituted parts of the polymer backbone. The resulting polymer 4 is soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. Polymer 4 showed thermal stability up to 280 ${^{\circ}C}$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperature obtained from differential scanning calorimetry near 108 ${^{\circ}C}$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength was around $3.54\;{\time}\;10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibited a thermal stability up to near $T_g$ and no significant SHG decay was observed below 100 ${^{\circ}C}$ due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

        Assessment of Magnetic Field Mitigation and Electrical Environmental Effects for Commercially Operating 154kV Transmission Lines with Passive Loop

        Power frequency magnetic field is still a critical problem for new construction of overhead power transmission lines in Korea because most people have been concerned about possibly carcinogenic effects of it. Although reference level of power frequency(60Hz) magnetic field has been set to 200uT in ICNIRP guidelines published in 2010, Korean government has no intention of adjusting 83.3uT specified by law in 2006 to this new reference level in consideration of people's concerns for the time being. Regardless of the current regulated magnetic field value, electric utility company has been trying to reduce magnetic field in the residential area in the vicinity of overhead power transmission lines to take into account of public concerns on the long-term effect of magnetic fields. In an effort to reduce magnetic field, engineering side has made considerable efforts to develop passive loop based, cost-effective mitigation technique of power frequency magnetic field more than ten years. In order to verify developed power frequency magnetic field mitigation technique based on passive loop, a horizontal type of passive loop was designed and installed for commercially operating 154kV overhead power transmission line for the first time in Korea. The measurement results before and after the installation of passive loop showed that magnetic field could be reduced to about 20%. The electrical environmental effects such as AN, RI and TVI were assessed before and after the installation of passive loop and these values were complied with the requirements specified by electric utility. It has been confirmed from the field test results that passive loop could be commercially and cost-effectively utilized to mitigate power frequency magnetic field.

        Synthesis and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Novel Polyester Containing Tricyanovinylthiophene with Enhanced Thermal Stability of Second Harmonic Generation

Polymer 7 was soluble in common organic solvents such as DMF and DMSO. It showed thermal stability up to 300°C in TGA with Tg value obtained from DSC near 134°C. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient (d33) of poled polymer film at the 1,560 nm fundamental wavelength was around 6.74 × 10-9 esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability and there was no SHG decay below Tg due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which was acceptable for NLO device applications.</P>

        <P>We have developed a three-dimensional (3D) liver-on-a-chip to investigate the interaction of hepatocytes and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) in which primary 3D hepatocyte spheroids and HSCs are co-cultured without direct cell-cell contact. Here, we show that the 3D liver chip offers substantial advantages for the formation and harvesting of spheroids. The most important feature of this liver chip is that it enables continuous flow of medium to the cells through osmotic pumping, and thus requires only minimal handling and no external power source. We also demonstrate that flow assists the formation and long-term maintenance of spheroids. Additionally, we quantitatively and qualitatively investigated the paracrine effects of HSCs, demonstrating that HSCs assist in the maintenance of hepatocyte spheroids and play an important role in the formation of tight cell-cell contacts, thereby improving liver-specific function. Spheroids derived from co-cultures exhibited improved albumin and urea secretion rates compared to mono-cultured spheroids after 9 days. Immunostaining for cytochrome P450 revealed that the enzymatic activity of spheroids co-cultured for 8 days was greater than that of mono-cultured spheroids. These results indicate that this system has the potential for further development as a unique model for studying cellular interactions or as a tool that can be incorporated into other models aimed at creating hepatic structure and prolonging hepatocyte function in culture.</P>
