Potentials of Phyllanthus amarus, Viscum album and Moringa oleifera supplements to mitigate heat stress in female rabbits in humid tropics

        Olatunji Abubakar Jimoh,Blessing Oluwaseun Olakanye,Ayoola Mercy Ajewole,Saanu Olajumoke Akinbuyide,Johnson Sunday Adetifa,Abdul-Quadri Ayodeji Jimoh,Adewale Oluwatosin Mayowa,Feyisayo Pemisire Adesin 한국축산학회 2024 한국축산학회지 Vol.66 No.1

Global warming is a key challenge subjecting animals to heat stress conditions resulting in multiple physiological alterations in tropical climate. Dietary approach seems to be the more friendly approach to curb the adverse effects of heat stress in rabbits. Some herbs have been categorized to have high potential for promotion of immune responses for amelioration of heat stress. Thus, this research aims to evaluate the potential of Mistletoe (Viscum album), Moringa (Moringa oleifera) and Phyllanthus (Phyllanthus amarus) leaf meal as herbal supplements for the alleviation of heat stress in female rabbits by measuring improvement in sex and stress hormonal responses in serum biochemistry. 80 Rabbit does were exposed to 4 dietary groups supplemented with each of Mistletoe, Moringa, Phyllanthus and a control in an 84-day trial at the summit of thermal stress in South west Nigeria. Growth indices were monitored throughout the study, blood samples were compiled at the end of the trial to assess serum biochemistry, stress and sex hormonal responses of the Does using standard protocols. The results revealed that final weight and weight gain of Does fed on Phyllanthus were significantly (p < 0.05) higher (11.46% and 14.25%, respectively) than Does on control. The herbal supplements enhance glucose, protein, albumin and globulin, reduced cholesterol, and creatinine of Does under heat stress conditions. Among the herbal treatment groups, mistletoe, moringa and phyllanthus had 12.42%, 18.39% and 16.90%, respectively, lower corticosterone than control groups which had 39.76ng/ml. Triiodothyronine of Does fed control were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than Does on Moringa oleifera and Phyllanthus amarus supplements. Estradiol and Follicle stimulating hormone of rabbit Does fed on moringa supplement were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than other treatments. In conclusion, the herbal supplements tend to mitigate the detrimental outcome of thermal stress on Does by suppressing stress hormones. Moringa oleifera and Phyllanthus amarus enhanced sex hormones while Phyllanthus amarus confered growth promoting effects on the Does.

Mapping Physical Education Student Teacher Competencies and Developmental Needs: Insights from the University of Botswana Teaching Practice Assessment Dataset 1998-2004

( Jimoh Shehu ),( Martin Mokgwathi ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2007 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.19 No.2

In the brave new world of physical education teacher education, subjecting teaching performance scores and the professional practices associated with these scores to regular theoretical and empirical scrutiny is necessary to root out preconceptions, stimulate pedagogical innovations, and provide cogent justifications for institutional investments in teaching practicum and clinical supervision. This study examines both the instruments used at the University of Botswana (UB) to evaluate the professional behaviours and personal attributes of physical education student teachers, and how the students have performed on these clinical evaluation scales. The dataset for the study contains the observation reports on 1,776 lessons taught by about 550 physical education student teachers from 1998-2004. Although students generally achieved high thresholds on various teaching skills and abilities, the results of rank ordering of aggregate points suggest a pattern of performance in which the supervisors consistently assigned highest ratings to some competencies and lowest ratings to others. In particular, students tended to receive lowest ratings on critical dimensions of teaching. Because high quality pedagogy is essential to student outcomes, teaching method courses in the context of UB must be redesigned to enhance students` competence in lesson preparation, presentation, conclusion, evaluation and creation of supportive environment for learner engagement.

Stock Price Index and Exchange Rate Nexus in African Markets

        Jimoh Olajide Raji,Yusnidah Ibrahim,Siti-Aznor Ahmad 한국국제경제학회 2017 International Economic Journal Vol.31 No.1

This paper examines the relationship between stock price index and exchange rate in six African markets using monthly data for the period January 2007 to October 2015. A quantile regression approach is used. This methodology is shown to perform better than the ordinary least squares estimators, particularly when the conditional distribution is heterogeneous. Our empirical evidence reveals an interesting pattern in the association of these two financial markets in Africa, which shows that the negative relationship between stock and foreign exchange markets is more apparent when exchange rates are extremely low or high. The negative relationship between the two variables is in line with the portfolio balance effect.

Direct adaptive neural control of antilock braking systems incorporated with passive suspension dynamics

        Jimoh O. Pedro,Olurotimi A. Dahunsi,Otis T. Nyandoro 대한기계학회 2012 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.26 No.12

A direct adaptive neural network-based feedback linearization (NNFBL) slip control scheme for an antilock braking system (ABS) is presented. The NNFBL slip controller is developed to minimise the vehicle braking distance and to simultaneously improve its overall ride comfort and road handling. The comprehensive vehicle model incorporates the passive suspension dynamics, the dynamics of the electro-mechanical based braking system and air drag and wheel bearing friction. A feedforward, multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network (NN) model that is well suited for control by discrete input-output linearization (NNIOL) is selected to represent the ABS with passive suspension. The NN model was trained using Levenberg-Marquardt optimization algorithm. The controlled signal was further boosted using a genetic algorithm generated gain. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated by simulation results, in the presence of deterministic road disturbance input to the suspension and varying road conditions. The results are superior with respect to braking distance minimization and also to reference slip tracking, especially on the dry asphalt road.

Performance Evaluation of Batch Pulp Digester using By-product (Sheath) from Bamboo Laminate Production

Jimoh Gbenga Fatoki 한국농업기계학회 2018 바이오시스템공학 Vol.43 No.4

Purpose: Self-sufficiency in paper production is desired in Nigeria. This study was aimed at evaluating the performance of a locally fabricated batch pulp digester. Methods: The pulp yields of sheaths generated as waste in the production of bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) laminates were determined at different liquor concentrations and treatment time after preliminary experiments to ascertain the conditions under which the sheath started to pulp. Moreover, the optimum pulping conditions and fiber characteristics were determined and estimated, respectively, to ascertain the pulp fiber suitability for paper production. Results: An optimum pulp yield of 65.1% was obtained at 50% NaOH and 25% Na2S liquor concentration (w/w) when the cooking time was 4 h. The results of fiber characterization of the pulp indicated an average fiber length of 2.19 mm with a low Runkel ratio of 1.63, both of which signify the suitability of the pulp for medium quality paper production. Conclusions: Softwood pulp can be blended with the fibers to improve the strength of the produced paper; further investigation should be carried out to use other non-woody plants for pulp and papermaking.

Performance, hemato-biochemical indices and oxidative stress markers of broiler chicken fed phytogenic during heat stress condition

        Olatunji Abubakar Jimoh,Olajumoke Temidayo Daramola,Hafsat Ololade Okin-Aminu,Olayinka Abosede Ojo 한국축산학회 2022 한국축산학회지 Vol.64 No.5

Thermal stress is a tremendous health predicament encountered by poultry farmers withadverse effects on the performance, product stature, health condition, survival, and overallwelfare of poultry birds, and so requires urgent dietary user-friendly strategy to curb. Thisstudy was conducted with 200-day old broilers for the purpose of investigating the potentialof phytogenics in refining the negative effects of heat stress on broiler chicken. Moringa,Phyllanthus and mistletoe leaves were processed as phytogenic supplements and incorporatedinto standard ration for broilers as treatments B1 (control), B2, B3 and B4 diet duringthe peak of thermal discomfort in humid tropics. Growth and carcass indices were monitoredin a 49-day trial and blood samples were harvested at the end of the ordeal period to assesshaematology, serum biochemical and oxidative stress markers with the use of standard procedures. The results obtained showed that the prevailing environmental condition in the studysite indicated that the birds were exposed to heat stress. Birds fed on moringa and mistletoesupplements had higher performance index than birds without supplementation during heatstress condition, while birds fed on mistletoe supplement had the highest survival rate acrossthe treatments. The liveweight, slaughter weight, dressed weight and eviscerated weight ofheat stressed birds fed on moringa, phyllanthus and mistletoe supplements were significantlyhigher than birds on control treatment. Heterophyl/lymphocyte ratio of heat stressed birdswithout supplement were higher than birds on phytogenic supplements, with least valuesrecorded in phyllanthus and mistletoe fed birds. Birds on phytogenic supplement tend tohave lower cholesterol profile, lipid peroxidation and better antioxidant profile than birds oncontrol treatment during heat stress conditions. Mistletoe supplementation in broiler rationenhances the survival rate, as well as promotes growth indices better among the phytogenicsupplements. However, phytogenic supplements did ameliorate the negative effects of thermal discomfort on performance, physiological and oxidative stress in heat-stressed broilerchicken.
