        DNA methylation and mRNA expression of COL6A3 in antler mesenchyme of female and male reindeer

        Backgroud Reindeer is the only deer species that both male and female produce antlers, which provides a particularly interesting case in studying the differences between antlers of the two sexes. Alpha 3(VI) Collagen Gene (COL6A3), forms a microfibrillar network associated with the structural integrity and biomechanical properties, has been found to be one of the differentially expressed genes in antler mesenchyme of female and male reindeer. Objective and Methods The promoter sequence of reindeer COL6A3 gene was obtained using the cloning technology and analyzed by the bioinformatics methods. Bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP) was used to detect the methylation status of the COL6A3 promoter in reindeer antler mesenchyme. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to detect COL6A3 expression in the antler mesenchyme of female and male reindeer. Results Sequence analysis revealed that the reindeer COL6A3 partial promoter sequence was 983 bp including the possible promoter region at + 105 bp to + 155 bp. Homology and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the COL6A3 promoter of reindeer had the closest genetic distance with Bos taurus, Capra hircus and Ovis aries. BSP results indicated that the methylation level of COL6A3 promoter in the female reindeer antler mesenchyme was significantly higher than in the male. Correlating with increased methylation status, we also found that COL6A3 mRNA expression in female reindeer antler mesenchyme was significantly lower than in the male. Conclusion The higher methylation level of the COL6A3 gene in female reindeer antler mesenchyme coincides with decreased COL6A3 mRNA expression, thereby affecting the transposon silencing mechanism and possibly contributing to apparent differences of antlers in female and male reindeer.

        Apolipoproteins as Differentiating and Predictive Markers for Assessing Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Small Cell Lung Cancer

        Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the value of apolipoproteins, including ApoA-1, ApoC-III, and ApoE, in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) as potential biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and cancer progression. Materials and Methods: Lung samples were collected from 89 patients with SCLC. Nineteen lung samples from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and 12 normal lung tissues were used as controls. Expression profiles of ApoA-1, ApoC-III, and ApoE in different samples were examined using immunohistochemical methods, and the expression levels were correlated with cancer types, treatment, and outcomes using chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: Expression of ApoA-1 and ApoC-III in SCLC was significantly different, compared with that in NSCLC and normal lung tissues, and was correlated with recurrence of SCLC. Patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy before surgery showed significantlyreduced expression of ApoA-1 and increased expression of ApoC-III and ApoE. Nevertheless, the expression levels of ApoA-1, ApoC-III, and ApoE were not correlated with SCLC staging. Conclusion: ApoA-1 and ApoC-III may be used as differentiating and predictive markers for SCLC. ApoA-1, ApoC-III, and ApoE may be used to monitor the efficacy of chemotherapy.

        English Reading Performance and Test-taking Strategies Use in the Two Reading Test Formats

        The present study reports an investigation into the comparison of test-taking strategies use in the two English reading test formats. Participants were 106 college level Chinese-speaking students of non-English majors, taking an obligatory English class in a college in China. They were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A taking the paper-pencil test and Group B the computer-based test. They took 20-item multiple-choice English reading comprehension test in each test format before answering a 16-item test-taking strategy questionnaire. The results revealed that 1) there were no significant effects of the test formats on their English reading test performance; 2) there were some effects of the test formats on their strategies use; and 3) the test formats had effects on strategies use of the low-level test-takers.         Interfacial performance enhancement of carbon fiber/epoxy composites by a twostep surface treatment

        Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) have many features, such as lightweight, high specific strength, and excellent chemical resistance. However, the adhesion at the interface of the CFRPs, which are composed of fiber and resin, is poor. Thus, delamination and interfacial peeling occur, and the mechanical properties, such as intrinsic strength and rigidity, decrease. Fiber surface modification by plasma and silane coupling treatments has attracted much attention to improve these properties. In this study, argon and oxygen mixed gas plasma treatment was used as pretreatment to introduce hydroxyl group on the fiber surface. This method was utilized to improve the adhesion between the fiber and resin. A silane coupling treatment was conducted to bond the carbon fiber and epoxy resin by chemical covalent bonding. The effect of silane coupling treatment on the interfacial property of CFRPs was investigated. Elemental analysis of the surface modified carbon fiber was explored through energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The functional groups of different carbon fiber surfaces were analyzed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The wettability of the treated carbon fiber was examined with a contact angle meter. The interlaminar shear strength was determined with a short beam method.

      • miR-340 Reverses Cisplatin Resistance of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cell Lines by Targeting Nrf2-dependent Antioxidant Pathway

        Many chemotherapeutic agents have been successfully used to treat hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, the development of chemoresistance in liver cancer cells usually results in a relapse and worsening of prognosis. It has been demonstrated that DNA methylation and histone modification play crucial roles in chemotherapy resistance. Currently, extensive research has shown that there is another potential mechanism of gene expression control, which is mediated through the function of short noncoding RNAs, especially for microRNAs (miRNAs), but little is known about their roles in cancer cell drug resistance. In present study, by taking advantage of miRNA effects on the resistance of human hepatocellular carcinoma cells line to cisplatin, it has been demonstrated that miR-340 were significantly downregulated whereas Nrf2 was upregulated in HepG2/CDDP (cisplatin) cells, compared with parental HepG2 cells. Bioinformatics analysis and luciferase assays of Nrf2-3'-untranslated region-based reporter constructor indicated that Nrf2 was the direct target gene of miR-340, miR-340 mimics suppressing Nrf2-dependent antioxidant pathway and enhancing the sensitivity of HepG2/CDDP cells to cisplatin. Interestingly, transfection with miR-340 mimics combined with miR-340 inhibitors reactivated the Nrf2 related pathway and restored the resistance of HepG2/CDDP cells to CDDP. Collectively, the results first suggested that lower expression of miR-340 is involved in the development of CDDP resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, at least partly due to regulating Nrf2-dependent antioxidant pathway.

        Influence of LPPS Spraying Parameters on Deposition Efficiency of Zirconia Powder

        Yttria stabilized zirconia coating is an attractive material for several engineering applications. In order to produce coatings with consistent and reliable performance it is important to understand the influence of spraying parameters on the coating properties and optimize the spraying parameters. In this paper the low pressure plasma spray(LPPS) deposition of as-received zirconia powder has been investigated using simple one-factor-at-a-time approach. The deposition efficiency was chosen to evaluate the melting characteristics of the as-received zirconia powder. The results obtained indicated that the deposition efficiency of zirconia powder is very sensitive to the spraying parameters such as plasma gas flow rate and ranges from 24% to 57% The microstructure and the phase composition of zirconia coating deposited with the different plasma spraying parameters were also examined by SEM and XRD respectively. The relationship between deposition efficiency and the microstructure of zirconia coating was discussed.

        다층 건물을 위한 Wi-Fi 기반의 저 복잡도 층간 위치 측위 기법

        최근 들어, 다층 건물 내 층간 위치 측위(Floor Determination)는 다양한 위치 기반 응용 서비스를 만족하기 위해 빠르게 해결해야 되는 문제가 되었다. 본 논문에서는 다층 건물 환경에서 Wi-Fi 신호를 기반으로 한 저복잡도 층간 위치 측위 기법을 제안한다. 제안 기법에서는 WAP(Wireless Access Point)에 대한 자세한 좌표 정보가 필요 없이, 사용자 단말기에 나온 각 WAP 의 층수와 각 WAP 의 수신 신호세기(Received Signal Strength) 값만을 이용한다. 제안 기법의 성능을 검증하기 위해 본 논문에서는 Multi-Wall-Floor 모델을 사용하였으며, 모의실험 결과를 통해 각층의 WAP 배치 밀도가 충분히 높을 경우 제안 기법의 정확도가 100%에 도달함을 보였다. 그리고 각층의 WAP 수가 적은 경우에서도 우수한 층간 위치 측위 성능을 보였으며, 특히 심지어 WAP 가 하나도 없는 층이 있어도 층간 위치 측위가 가능한 것을 보임으로써 제안된 기법의 우수성을 확인하였다. Floor number determination has attracted considerable attention because many applications require accurate floor number information for providing better localization services in multistory buildings. This paper describes a Wi-Fi-based, low-complexity floor number determination method for multistory buildings. In our scheme, with the exception of floor ID and received signal strength of each WAP, detailed information on the wireless access point(WAP) coordinates is not needed. The multi-wall-floor model is used for the simulation and analysis. The simulation results show that the floor determination accuracy is nearly 100 given an adequate deployment density of WAPs on each floor. The results also show that the proposed method provides a good estimate of floor number even when only a few WAPs are implemented on each floor. Specifically, the proposed method can work under extreme conditions, i.e., where there are no WAPs on a floor.

        韩语表对象副词格助词对译汉语介词的研究

        한국어 부사격 조사와 중국어 개사는 모두 허사(虛詞)에 속하는 것으로 많은 유사점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 대조언어학을 이론적 배경으로 하여, ‘대상 표지’ 즉 ‘대상을 나타내는’ 의미 기능에 있어 한국어 부사격 조 사에 상응하는 중국어 개사를 분석하고, 더 나아가 한국어 격조사와 중국어 개사에 대한 대조 연구를 진행하고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 우선 ‘대상 표지’ 의미 기능을 ‘행위가 영향이 미치는 대상’, ‘무엇을 받는 주체’, ‘주어에 대해 행위를 미치는 주체’, ‘관계를 맺거나 관련된 대상’, ‘비교와 비유의 대상’ 그리고 ‘행동이나 상태의 한정된 범위’ 등 여섯 가지로 분류하여 각 의미기능에서 한국어 부사격 조사에 상응하는 중국어 표현을 살펴본 결과, 모든 경우에 한국어 부사격 조사가 중국어 개사에 상응하는 것이 아니라 어떤 경우에는 개사 형식이 아닌 다른 요소로 표현된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 본 논문에서는 문장 중의 위치, 문장 구성, 어휘 변천 등 여러 면에서 한국어 부사격 조사와 중국어 개사에 대한 대조 분석을 통해 한국어 조사와 중국어 개사가 가진 양자의 특징을 살펴 볼 수 있었다. Both case auxiliaries in Korean and preposition in Chinese fall into the category of function words with many conceptual similarities. Based on the linguistic theory, the paper analyzes and compares the literal translation between adverbial case auxiliaries in Korean and preposition in Chinese in the category of object. The paper firstly further divides the “category of object” into the following six aspects: “object directly affected by action behavior”, “receiver”, “activity subject”, “related object”, “comparison or metaphor object” and “limited range”, and studies the Chinese translation of Korean adverbial case auxiliaries for each aspect. The paper finds that not all the adverbial case auxiliaries in Korean are equivalent to the preposition in Chinese. Base on the comparison result, the paper makes a comparative analysis about the adverbial case auxiliaries in Korean and preposition in Chinese from such aspects as sentential position, sentence composition and word development, therefore making a conclusion about the respective features of case auxiliaries in Korean and preposition in Chinese.
