Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba 한국무역연구원 2014 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.10 No.2

This study primarily assessed the Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management (BSABM) degree program of UP Los Baños (UPLB) through its graduates’ perceptions of their readiness on the job front. Specifically, the study focused on ascertaining the career paths taken by the graduates after attaining their degrees, identifying which subjects/skills the graduates perceived as having contributed to their job preparedness, determining the factors affecting the graduates’ perception of their job readiness and recommending changes for the improvement of the BSABM curriculum based on suggestions obtained from the respondents. Data collection was done through a survey of 150 BSABM alumni selected through purposive sampling. Results from descriptive data analysis indicated that career paths, demographic characteristics, parameters pertaining to college life and job satisfaction indicated the respondents’ preparedness for their jobs. Perceived gaps in their training by the graduates were recognized to suggest changes for the improvement of the BSABM curriculum.

Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo a,Kristine P. Lasac The International Academy of Global Business and T 2017 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.13 No.2

This paper examines the impacts of mining in the fishery sector of selected country cases, namely Zambia, Canada, Alaska, Northern Chile and the Philippines. Secondary data were utilized to describe the impacts of mining in the fishery sector of the selected countries, except in the Philippines, wherein primary data were gathered through personal interviews of the fisherfolk in Boac, Marinduque, Philippines. Mining may have positive benefits, particularly in the overall economy of the selected countries, but in the fishery sector, only negative consequences have been found. The study enumerates these benefits and the consequences of mining to the fishery sector of the selected countries, and also gives recommendations to address the general welfare of the global fishery sector.

      • An Assessment of an Inclusive Business Model (Ibm) in The Philippines: The Case of the Kalasag Farmers Producers Cooperative (KALASAG-FPC)

        Cathrene P. Amante(Cathrene P. Amante ),Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba(Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba ),Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo(Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo ),Juan Paulino S. Trespalacio(Juan Paulino S. Trespa 아시아무역학회 2022 Journal of Asia Trade and Business Vol.9 No.1

Purpose - This paper evaluated the inclusive business model (IBM) adopted by the KALASAG Farmers Producers Cooperative (KALASAG-FPC) in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Specifically, the study assessed the Farmer Entrepreneurship Program (FEP) of Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) relative to KALASAG-FPC in order to describe how an IBM affected the farmers' lives and their business operations. By determining the perceived level of inclusiveness of the IBM from three perspectives, strategies were crafted to improve business model inclusivity. Design/Methodology/Approach - In discussing the activities in the business model and the business operations of the cooperative, the case approach, and the IBM principles and radar chart from the study entitled “Is Inclusive Business for you? Managing and upscaling an inclusive company: Lessons from the field” by Sopov et al. (2014) were used. Findings - The results showed that the business model was perceived by the farmers, program implementers, and the main researcher to be the most inclusive in three different areas, but least inclusive in one same area. Therefore, the discussion focused on what led to these perceptions, and what can be done to enhance the inclusivity of the business model. Research Implications - The recommendations focused on activities that promote the chain-wide collaboration of the IBM players in order to solve problems faced not only by the farmers but also by the program implementers and partners. The study’s contribution lies in demonstrating the application of the 2014 study framework on an IBM in the Philippine context.

Longevity Determinants of Embroidery Enterprises in Taal, Batangas, Philippines

        Divine Krizza B. Padua,Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba,Jimmy B. Williams 강원대학교 경영경제연구소 2016 Asia-Pacific Journal of Business Vol.7 No.1

The study specifically aimed to identify factors affecting business longevity. It focused on knowing how embroidery enterprises managed to persist in the industry for many years despite the competitive business environment. After discovering the significant relationships of such factors to longevity, problems experienced by the enterprise cluster were ascertained in order to come up with recommendations that can be proposed to the enterprise owners. Embroidery entrepreneurs have been experiencing a continuous decline in sales due to lack of innovation and intense competition. In the evaluation of their personal entrepreneurial competencies, they scored low on risk-taking, persuasion and networking, and opportunity seeking; thus, implying that these are their weaknesses. On the other hand, the statistical results of this study say that longevity is a function of the entrepreneur’s competencies (i.e., persistence, commitment to work contract, demand for quality and efficiency, information seeking, and systematic planning or monitoring), the generation currently managing the business, competition, and the customer’s preferences. These results suggest that these independent variables are significant and are deemed critical to business longevity. Thus, entrepreneurs have to find ways on how to use these competencies as an advantage in reinventing their businesses and in reviving their industry.

The Acceptability of Locally-Adapted Japonica Rice Variety in the Philippine Market: A Product Market Test Approach

        레넨 실라르도 C. 데 구즈만,Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo,박동수,서정필 한국국제농업개발학회 2023 韓國國際農業開發學會誌 Vol.35 No.1

To determine the acceptability of Grain Utilization Value Added (GUVA) Japonica rice variety developed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and South Korea’s Rural Development Authority (RDA), home use tests were conducted in n=69 businesses that were using Japonica rice. In general, they were satisfied with the Japonica brands, because they provided them with the particulars needed in their Japanese and Korean dishes. According to them, the value and quality of the Japonica rice justify the price. However, the GUVA Japonica Rice variety’s positive ratings were significantly lower compared to the brands they were used to. This applied to both their overall and attributespecific evaluations. Among the attributes, size, shape, aroma, and stickiness received significantly lower ratings compared to the other Japonica varieties. For them, it was too small, too round, less aromatic, and less sticky which may lead to challenges in preparation consequently affecting the commercial acceptability of the dishes they offer. Even with this experience and perception, they were still willing to consider the GUVA Japonica Rice when it was available in the market. Using the Van Westendorp pricing model, GUVA Japonica yielded a price of PHP 51.00 (1.01 USD) which was competitive. These findings provide recommendations for measures that should be put in place so that value chain players can preserve and maintain quality until the rice reach the business market.

      • Employer Perceptions on Relevant Competencies and Career Readiness of Entry-Level College Graduate Employees in Selected Agribusiness Enterprises and Support Institutions in Laguna, Philippines

        Pia Adelie M. Mortel,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba,Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo,Nohreen Ethel P. Manipol,Rachelle A. Mariano The International Academy of Global Business and T 2017 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.13 No.2

With agribusiness as one of the five priority areas of today’s government (Romualdez, 2017), identifying the competency needs of the industry and developing a matching workforce is important for development. However, few similar studies regarding agribusiness competencies have been done in a Philippine setting. Thus, this study provided insights on employer perceptions on relevant competencies and career readiness of entry-level college graduate employees participating in agribusiness/support institutions in Laguna, Philippines. Non-random sampling was conducted depending on the availability of employer-respondents. A list of agribusiness-related enterprises and support institutions was collated from primary data (list provided by local government units and site visits of select areas in the province of Laguna, Philippines) and secondary data (web searches and referrals). Out of the 94 contacted, a total of 51 employers in Laguna province (41 businesses and 10 institutions) participated in the study, primarily through self-administered questionnaires. Fifty-two entry-level employees in different job fields were grouped by degree and university for analysis. Twenty-two competencies derived by Miller et al. (2005) from previous studies were used for the evaluation. A Likert-scale was used to express an employer’s perceived level of importance, expectation, and performance for the competencies. Descriptive statistics such as median, quartile and interquartile ranges, cross-tabulations, chi-square test of association, and Cramer’s V for strength of association were used to analyze the given ratings. Findings revealed that communication-based competencies and technical competencies (agriculture/business-specific knowledges) remain the top relevant competencies in agribusiness. External factors are associated with the emergence of new competencies (such as globalization and computer technology-related skills) becoming increasingly important in agribusiness. Entry-level college graduates were mostly rated to be proficient and career ready; however, there are competencies such as negotiation (N-UPLB graduates with ABM degree) and interdependence of business functions (UPLB graduates with N-ABM degree) where further training is needed. Thus, students and professors of educational institutions may have to align their learning and teaching, respectively, in order to address lacking or underdeveloped competencies for better employability.
