        State Indicator of Water Quality for Surface Water and Groundwater in Agriculture

        Indicators of environmental conditions qualitatively and quantitatively describe the state of the environment and natural resources, and the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) has initiated and suggested AEIs (Agri-Environmental Indicators) to assess trends over time of the effects of agriculture on the environment and the effectiveness and efficiency of agricultural and environmental policy measures since 1990’s. This study aims to develop the state indicators of water quality for agricultural water, surface and groundwater, to evaluate the environmental impacts of agricultural activities and policies by qualifying the environmental levels of a nation. Status indicators were calculated according to the agricultural water quality standards of OECD and Korea, and their trends were analyzed over time. Particularly, nitrate(NO₃<SUP>-</SUP>) status indicators of ground water in 2013 were significantly lower than the ones in 2000. Overall, the water quality indicators of surface water in 2013 were higher than the ones in 2012, except for pH and DO. The groundwater quality indicators in 2013 were lower than those of previous years. The optimal management indicators were calculated to assess agricultural surface water and groundwater quality. The findings of this study indicated that the state indicators could play a significant role to establish policies and procedures for managing and conserving water resources. This study also discussed water pollution caused by agricultural and industrial effluents.

There have been many studies describing the relationship between angiogenesis and VEGF expression. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-angiogenic effect of neferine on HUVEC and CAM. Methods: The anti-angiogenic effect of neferine was investigated in the proliferation and the CAM assay. Results: In vitro experiment, neferine inhibits the proliferation of vascular endothelial cells on dose- dependent manner (proliferation). In vivo experiment, neferine inhibits the formation of blood vessel on CAM. Conclusion: These results indicate that neferine inhibits the VEGF-mediated tumor angiogenesis in dose-dependent manner.

        Safety and biotechnological properties of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolates from Meju

        We assessed the safety and biotechnological properties of 17 Enterococcus faecalis and 18 Enterococcus faecium strains isolated from Meju to select starter candidates for quality Meju production. Minimum inhibitory concentration assays showed that all strains were susceptible to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, penicillin G, and tetracycline, as judged by the breakpoint values defined at the species level by the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing, whereas two E. faecalis strains were resistant to vancomycin, which could be ascribed to acquired resistance. None of the strains exhibited ${\alpha}$- or ${\beta}$-hemolytic activities or biofilm formation. Both species showed similar levels of biogenic amine production, and noticeable amounts of tyramine ($3397.4{\pm}172.4ppm$) were produced by all strains in the presence of precursors (histidine, lysine, ornithine, and tyrosine). All strains exhibited protease, lipase, and acid production, with decreased activity observed with increasing NaCl concentrations. This study confirmed the necessity of antibiotic resistance screening of Enterococcus species for food production, with the identification of vancomycin-resistant strains from Meju.

Caffeine may repair skin damage induced by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light. In previous report of the associations between coffee consumption and incidence of these skin cancers, the result that the consumption of neither caffeinated nor decaffeinated coffee was associated with basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Objectives: In this study, our aim is to describe the mechanisms of the anti-angiogenic effect of caffeine in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods: Matrigel assays were used to investigate the effect of caffeine on angiogenesis at cell migration and wound healing and proliferation assays using HUVECs and HNSCC. Results: Caffeine was found to inhibit blood vessel formation dose-dependently and to inhibit the proliferation of HUVECs time- and dose-dependently. The apoptosis examination was used by western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. Conclusion: Caffeine was found to inhibit blood vessel formation dose-dependently and to inhibit the proliferation of HUVECs on the same manners. There is no satisfactory enhancement and/or inhibition on proliferation of HNSCC.

      • Postpartum Serum Digoxin-like Immunoreactive Substance Concentration in Preeclamptic pregnancies

        연구목적 : 자간전증 발생을 예측하는데 혈청 digoxin-like immunoreactive substance (DLIS) 농도가 유용한지 알아보기위해, 혈청 DLIS 농도와 임신주수의 연관성을 관찰하고, 정상임부 및 자간전증환자간에 분만전후 혈청 DLIS 농도의 차이가 있는지 알아보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법 : 임신주수벌로 무작위 선정한 73명의 정상임부의 혈청 및 분만진동으로 입원한 정상임부 21명과 자간전증환자 23명으로부터 분만전, 분만후 각각 24시간, 36시간, 1주일후에 연속적으로 채취한 혈청으로 Fluorescence Polarization Immunoassay를 이용하여 DLIS 농도를 측정하였다. 통계분석은 선형회귀분석, 반복측정값을 이용한 analysis of variance와 t-test를 이용하였다 결과 : 정상임신의 경우 혈청 DLIS 농도는 임신주수가 증가함에 따라 지속적으로 증가하였고 (y= 0.575x + 15.144 ; r= 0.57 ; p<0.0001), 분만직전에 비해 혈청 DLIS 농도는 분만후 급격히 감소하였으나 (분만전, 0.38 ± 0.12 ; 분만 24시간후, 0.24 ± 0.09 ; 분만 36시간후, 0.25 ± 0.1 ; 분만 1주일후, 0.19±0.07 ng/ml, p<0.0001), 자간전증의 경우는 분만후에도 뚜렷한 감소가 없었다 (각각 0.35±0.19 ; 0.29±0.19 ; 0.34±0.17 ; 0.25±0.12p=0.2279) 임신 3기의 자간전증 환자의 혈청 DLIS 농도는 정상임신과 차이가 없었다 (0.354 ± 0.19 ng/ml vs 0.381±0.12 ng/ml, p=0.533). 결론 : 혈청 DLIS 농도는 임신주수에 따라 증가되며, 분만후에는 괍격히 감소한다. 그러나 혈청 DLIS 농도 측정은 자간전증의 발생을 예측하는데 유용성이 없다. Purpose : To determine clinical usefulness of serum digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels as a predictor of preeclampsia, we evaluated the relationship between serum digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels and gestational age. and compared pre and postpartum digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels in normal and preeclamptic patients. Material and Methods : We measured serum digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels with Fluorescence Polarization Immunoassay (Abbott, IL) in 73 Patients during either the first (n=11), second (n=31), or third (n=31) trimester of pregnancy. We also measured serial serum digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels in 21 normotensive and 23 preeclamptic patients at immediate prepartum, postpartum 24 hours, postpartum 36 hours, and postpartum 1 week. Statistical evaluation was performed with the linear regression, repeated measures analysis of variance and t-test. Results : Serum digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels increased throughout gestation (y=0.575x + 15.144, r²=0.3237; p<0.0001), and decreased rapidly after delivery in normal pregnancies (prepartum, 0.38 ± 0.12; postpartum 24 hours, 0.24± 0.09; postpartum 36 hours, 0.25 ± 0.1; postpartum 1 week. 0.19±0.07 ng/ml, p<0.0001). There was no significant postpartum decreases in preeclamptic pregnancies (0.35±0.19; 0.29±0.19; 03.34±0.17; 0.25±0.12, respectively, p=0.2249). There was no difference in digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels between normal and preeclamptic pregnancies of third trimester (0.354±0.19ng/ml vs. 0.381±0.12ng/ml, p=0.533). Conclusion : Serum digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels increase with gestational age, and decrease rapidly after delivery. However, measuring digoxin-like immunoreactive substance levels is not useful as a predictor of preeclampsia.

        Research Note : Mitochondrial Protein Nfu1 Influences Homeostasis of Essential Metals in the Human Fungal Pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans

        Mitochondrial protein Nfu1 plays an important role in the assembly of mitochondrial Fe-S clusters and intracellular iron homeostasis in the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, we identified the Nfu1 ortholog in the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. Our data showed that C. neoformans Nfu1 localized in the mitochondria and influenced homeostasis of essential metals such as iron, copper and manganese. Marked growth defects were observed in the mutant lacking NFU1, which suggests a critical role of Nfu1 in Fe-S cluster biosynthesis and intracellular metal homeostasis in C. neoformans.

        <P><B>An extraordinarily facile sub‐10 nm fabrication method</B> using the synergic combination of nanotransfer printing and the directed self‐assembly of block copolymers is introduced. The approach is realized by achieving the uniform self‐assembly of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)‐containing block copolymers on a PDMS mold through the stabilization of the block copolymer thin films. This simple printing method can be applied on oxides, metals, polymers, and non‐planar substrates without pretreatments. The fabrication of well‐aligned metallic and polymeric functional nanostructures and crossed wire structures is also presented.</P>
