Previous laboratory repellent assessment with three plant essential oils against Haemaphysalis longicornis, a major vector for Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, revealed high repellency of Lavendual angustifolia and high synergic effects of Cinnamomum zeylinicam and Juniperus verginiana. Based on the previous laboratory repellent assessment field studies on repellency of the three plant oils were carried out with formulations such as cream type and spray type. 10% spray type of Cinnamomum zeylinicam demonstrated > 70% of repellency against H. longicornis. 10% spray type of Lavendual angustifolia showed > 80% of repellency. 10% spray type of binary mixture containing Cinnnamomum zeylinicam and Juniperus verginiana showed > 98% repellency against H. longicornis. Further studies on repellency of cream type of the plant oils might be carried out and compared with two commercial repellents.

A fiber-optic radiation sensor (FORS) was fabricated using a cerium-doped silicate-yttriumlutetium (LYSO:Ce) scintillator crystal and a silica optical fiber (SOF) to measure gamma-rays accurately in elevated temperature conditions. Throughout this study, a LYSO:Ce crystal was employed as a sensing material of the FORS due to its high light yield (32,000 photons/MeV), fast decay time (a parts per thousand currency sign 47 ns) and high detection efficiency. Although the LYSO:Ce crystal has many desirable qualities, the thermoluminescence (TL) should be eliminated by using a heat annealing process because the light yield of the LYSO:Ce crystal varies with its TL. In this study, therefore, we obtained the TL curve of the LYSO:Ce crystal by increasing the temperature up to 280 a'integral, and we demonstrated that almost all of the TL of the LYSO:Ce crystal was eliminated by the heat annealing process.

Botulism is a neuroparalytic disease caused by a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. This study aimed to genetically characterize C. botulinum strain isolated from the first case of infant botulism in Korea reported on June 17, 2019. We isolated C. botulinum strain CB-27 from a stool sample of the patient and analyzed the toxin types and toxin gene cluster compositions of the strain using a mouse bioassay, real-time PCR, and genome sequencing. Toxin gene cluster analysis showed that strain CB-27 possesses a C. botulinum neurotoxin type A harboring an unexpressed B gene. Although the nucleotide and amino acid sequences of toxin genes as well as the toxin gene cluster arrangements in strain CB-27 were identical to those of the known strain CDC_69094, the total nucleotide sequences of the toxin gene clusters of CB-27 differed from those of CDC_69094 by 0.47%, indicating genetic diversity of toxin gene clusters of CB-27 among other previously reported C. botulinum strains. To our knowledge, this is the first description of a C. botulinum strain with two separate toxin gene clusters in Korea.

Abstract

We show that hydrogen-induced magnetism in monolayer MoS2 is dictated by the hydrogen adsorption sites and concentration by using density functional theory calculations. Hydrogen adsorbed at the center of the hexagonal ring leads to an itinerant ferromagnetism at relatively high concentrations, whereas hydrogen adsorbed on sulfur leads to a flat-band ferromagnetism at a relatively low concentration. The electrons in the non-metallic flat-band ferromagnetism are equally distributed on hydrogen and nearby Mo and S atoms, in contrast to the non-magnetic case where they are concentrated on the nearby Mo atoms.

Highlights

Magnetism in monolayer MoS2 dictated by hydrogen adsorption sites and concentration.

Itinerant ferromagnetism from high-concentration hydrogen adsorbed at the center of the hexagonal ring.

Flat-band ferromagnetism from low-concentration hydrogen adsorbed on sulfur.
