Manipulation of Chain Conformation for Optimum Charge-Transport Pathways in Conjugated Polymers
Jeon, Seolhee,Lee, Jung Hun,Park, Jai Il,Jo, Bonghyun,Whang, Dong Ryeol,Ahn, Tae Kyu,Park, Hui Joon,Kim, Sung Dong,Lee, Wi Hyoung,Kim, Bong-Gi American Chemical Society 2017 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.9 No.27

A pair of different diketopyrrolopyrrole-based conjugated polymers (CPs) were designed and synthesized to investigate the effect of chain conformation on their molecular assembly. Conformation management was achieved by the incorporation of different linkers during polymerization. Through the use of computational calculations and UV vis absorption measurements, the resulting CPs (PDPP-T and PDPP-BT) were found to exhibit partly modulated chain geometry. Grazing incident X-ray diffraction experiments with a two-dimensional detector revealed that PDPP-T having a planar chain conformation exhibited an edge-on type molecular arrangement, which evolved to a face-on type chain assembly when the planar geometry was altered to a slightly twisted one as in PDPP-BT. In addition, it was verified that the directional electric carrier mobility of CPS was critically distinguished by the distinctive chain arrangement in' spite of their similar chemical structure. concentration-dependent absorption measurements could provide an improved understanding of the assembly mechanism of CP chains: the planar conformation of PDPP-T facilitates the formation of preassembled chains in a concentrated solution and further directs the edge .on stacking, while the twisted dihedral angle along the benzothiophene in PDPP-BT prevents chain assembly, resulting in the face-on stacking. Because CP chain conformation is inevitably connected with the generation of preassembled chains, manipulating CP geometry could be an efficient tool for extracting an optimum chain assembly that is connected with the principal charge-transport pathway in CPs.

Many inflammatory mediators, including histamine, inflammatory proteases, arachidonic acid metabolites and cytokines are released by mast cell activation. However, little is known about the endogenous modulators for mast cell activation and their mechanism. Endogenous cannabinoids found in peripheral tissues, such as palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), have been proposed as having autacoid activity, which can down-regulate mast cell activation and local inflammation. Based on the chemical structure of agonists and antagonists, 30 compounds were synthesized and their modulating activity on human cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) and 2 (CB2R) were tested using CB1R or CB2R transfected CHO cell line, respectively. Among the tested compounds, a few potential CB1R agonists were screened and further investigated on mast cell activation model. Using a cultured rat mast cell line, effect of selected compounds on Fcε RI-induced histamine and β-hexosaminidase release were measured. As a result, newly synthesized CB1R agonists down-regulated the release of histamine by IgE activation in mast cells, Furthermore, inhibitory effect on histamine release was also observed in mast cells activated by protease-activated receptor (PAR)-2 agonists. Taken together, CB1R agonists can down-regulate the mast cell activation, and might be a used for relieving inflammatory symptoms mediated by mast cell activation, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis or chronic urticarial.

Nanoscale floating-gate characteristic of colloidal Au nanoparticles electrostatically assembled on the oxidized surface of Si nanowires have been investigated. The Si nanowire split-gate transistor structure was fabricated by electron beam lithography and subsequent reactive ion etching. Colloidal Au nanoparticles with ${\sim}5$ nm diameters were selectively deposited onto the Si nanowire surface by 2 min electrophoresis. It was found that electric fields applied to the self-aligned split side gates allowed charge to be transferred on the Au nanoparticles. It was observed that the depletion mode cutoff voltage, induced by the self-aligned side gates, was shifted by more than 1 V after Au nanoparticle electrophoresis. This may be due to the semi-one dimensional nature of the narrow Si nanowire transport channel, having much enhanced sensitivity to charges on the surface.

We report the fabrication of multifunctional theranositic biomaterials via non-covalent, rapid, andeffective encapsulation of 1,10dioctadecyl-3,3,30,30-tetrametylindotrucarbocyanine iodide (DIR)onto mesoporous silica nanoparticles by coating the surface of polyethylene glycol (PEG-DIR@MSN). PEG-DIR@MSNs exhibited great stability with excellent biocompatibility and photothermal conversionproperties. PEG-DIR@MSN allowed for not only the detection of various types of tumor and ischemiclesions but also photothermal therapy against breast cancer in living mice, suggesting that PEGDIR@MSN is a valuable multifunctional theranostic platform.
Resistive and Inductive Loading Techniques on Microstrip Antenna for Wideband Application
Jeon, Sang-Bong,Ahn, Chang-Hoi The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2011 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.6 No.5
In this work, an exponentially tapered microstrip antenna was implemented using a resistive loading technique in order to suppress the internal reflections. The inductive loading was realized by introducing slits on the antenna to improve radiation efficiency. Compared with a resistive-loaded antenna, the proposed antenna had an average improvement of about 6.2% in radiation efficiency within the range of 2-10.5 GHz. In addition, the highest peak of the radiated short pulse from the proposed antenna became 45% greater than that of an antenna with resistive loading only.

Abstract

The west coast of Korea has experienced environmental deterioration for more than half a century. In the present study, we specifically aimed to: i) evaluate potential toxicities of contaminants in sediments that cause effects mediated through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and estrogen receptor (ER); ii) determine spatio-temporal distributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and alkylphenols (APs); and iii) identify causes of greater potencies of samples. From 2010 to 2014, sediments were collected from 12 major estuarine and coastal regions along the west coast of South Korea. In vitro cell bioassays were performed to determine AhR- and ER-mediated potencies using H4IIE-luc and MVLN cells, respectively. Fifteen PAHs and six APs in sediments were identified by GC/MSD. Results of bioassays generally showed a low-to-moderate degree of contamination, however, greater AhR- and ER-mediated potencies were measured at some locations. Concentrations of PAHs and APs varied among locations, which indicated that sources were independently affected by the surrounding environment (e.g., industrial complex and cities). Results of bioassays were generally well correlated with concentrations of putative causative chemicals. Benzo[k]fluoranthene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, and benzo[b]fluoranthene were the major AhR agonists, explaining approximately 30% of the bioassay-derived benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration (BaP-EQ). Unknown AhR and ER agonists and potential mixture effects remain in question. Overall, the present study provides baseline information on chemical contaminations and potential toxicity of sediments in a fairly wide geographical region of the west coast of South Korea.

Highlights

AhR and ER potencies in sediments from the west coast of Korea were characterized.

Bioassay results generally showed a low-to-moderate contamination of sediments.

Distributions of PAHs and APs were generally affected by human activities.

Five- and six-ring PAHs were the major AhR-active compounds in sediments.

Known and unknown aromatics with log Kow 5–8 are likely major AhR agonists.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Purpose: Management options for extraperitoneal bladder injury (EBI) associated with pelvicfracture are variable. Predictive factors of operative management (OM) in patients with EBIassociated pelvic fracture have not been previously addressed. This study assessed the currentepidemiology of blunt traumatic urinary bladder injury and evaluated relevant clinical findings ofpatients with EBI associated with pelvic fracture who received OM. Methods: Patients with urinary bladder injury with or without pelvic fracture from blunt traumafrom January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2019 were identified from the institute trauma registry(n = 12,891). Demographics, mechanism of injury, type of urinary bladder injury, pelvic fractureconfiguration, and management options were analysed in the study population (n = 9,894). Results: Of the 1,400 patients who had pelvic and/or acetabular fracture, 32 (2.3%) had urinarybladder injury. Of the 8,494 patients without pelvic and/or acetabular fracture, 12 (0.1%) had nonpelvicfracture urinary bladder injury. The total incidence of urinary bladder injuries in the studypopulation was 0.4% (44/9,894). Patients with EBI associated with pelvic fracture who underwentOM, had a higher frequency of high-grade pelvic injury (100% vs 0%, p = 0.015), concomitant pelvicsurgery (75.0% vs 0%, p = 0.001), and non-lateral compression type pelvic fracture (62.5% vs 10.0%,p = 0.043) compared with patients who underwent non-operative management of EBI. Conclusions: These data suggest that OM may be considered especially in patients with EBIassociated with pelvic fracture with high grade pelvic injury, concomitant pelvic surgery, and nonlateralcompression type pelvic fracture.
