Next generation guided wave health monitoring for long range inspection of pipes
Rose, Joseph L.,Cho, Younho,Avioli, Michael J. Elsevier 2009 Journal of loss prevention in the process industri Vol.22 No.6
<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Shown in this paper are recent accomplishments of robust leading edge technologies in the guided wave technique and the technology transfer to the Gas and Petrochemical Industries. Focusing of guided wave beams is a key for success, compared to conventional axisymmetric excitation. Guided wave scanning and significant sensitivity enhancement are established via the newly implemented focusing scheme. In addition, using both longitudinal and torsional modes is essential to improve sensitivity and reliability in data analysis over the conventional technique based on only longitudinal or torsional. The related theoretical studies and experimental data are also presented along with field test results for confirmation.</P>
A Feasibility Study of Guided Wave Technique for Rail Monitoring
Rose, J.L.,Lee, C.M.,Cho, Y. The Korean Society for Nondestructive Testing 2006 한국비파괴검사학회지 Vol.26 No.6
The critical subject of transverse crack detection in a rail head is treated in this paper. Conventional bulk wave ultrasonic techniques oftenfail because of shelling and other surface imperfections that shield the defects that lie below the shelling. A guided wave inspection technique is introduced here that can send ultrasonic energy along the rail under the shelling with a capability of finding the deleterious transverse crack defects. Dispersion curves are generated via a semi analytical finite element technique along with a hybrid guided wave finite element technique to explore the most suitable modes and frequencies for finding these defects. Sensor design and experimental feasibility experiments are also reported.

Chromosomal translocations are a hallmark of leukemia/lymphoma and also appear in solid tumors, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. By establishing a cellular model that mimics the relative frequency of authentic translocation events without proliferation selection, we report mechanisms of nuclear receptor-dependent tumor translocations. Intronic binding of liganded androgen receptor (AR) first juxtaposes translocation loci by triggering intra- and interchromosomal interactions. AR then promotes site-specific DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) at translocation loci by recruiting two types of enzymatic activities induced by genotoxic stress and liganded AR, including activation-induced cytidine deaminase and the LINE-1 repeat-encoded ORF2 endonuclease. These enzymes synergistically generate site-selective DSBs at juxtaposed translocation loci that are ligated by nonhomologous end joining pathway for specific translocations. Our data suggest that the confluence of two parallel pathways initiated by liganded nuclear receptor and genotoxic stress underlies nonrandom tumor translocations, which may function in many types of tumors and pathological processes.
GUIDED WAVE MODE IDENTIFICATION USING WAVELET TRANSFORM
Park, Ik-Keun,Kim, Hyun-Mook,Kim, Young-Kwon,Rose, J. L. 한국공작기계학회 2003 한국공작기계학회 춘계학술대회논문집 Vol.2003 No.-
One of unique characteristics of guided waves is a dispersive behavior that guided wave velocity changes with an excitation frequency and mode. In practical applications of guided wave techniques, it is very important to identify propagating modes in a time-domain waveform for determination of defect location and size. Mode identification can be done by measurement of group velocity in a time-domain waveform. Thus, it is preferred to generate a single or less dispersive mode But, in many cases, it is difficult to distinguish a mode clearly in a time-domain waveform because of superposition of multi modes and mode conversion phenomena. Time-frequency analysis is used as efficient methods to identify modes by presenting wave energy distribution in a time-frequency. In this study, experimental guided wave mode identification is carried out in a steel plate using time-frequency analysis methods such as wavelet transform. The results are compared with theoretically calculated group velocity dispersion curves. The results are in good agreement with analytical predictions and show the effectiveness of using the wavelet transform method to identify and measure the amplitudes of individual guided wave modes.

The study used the total economic value as a framework for estimating the values of the different uses of mangroves in Palawan and Bohol, Philippines. Market surveys were conducted to estimate the revenues from the major mangrove products collected in the two study sites. Contingent valuation method and travel cost method questionnaires were used in the survey to determine the biodiversity and recreational values (in Philippine pesos or PHP). Results of the market survey showed that the highest direct use value per year was estimated for Banacon site in Bohol with PHP 33.368 million per year as compared to Kamuning site in Palawan (PHP 25.521 million). The highest value of benefit for Banacon came from crab catch with PHP 13.23 million. Mollusk catch gave higher benefits to Kamuning, amounting to PHP 17.65 million. In terms of the values of benefits from shrimp and fish catch, the values for Banacon were higher than those in Kamuning site (PHP 8.06 million and PHP 6.38 million, respectively for Banacon, and PHP 4.32 million and PHP 0.16 million, respectively, for Kamuning). Nipa thatch was the source of the third highest value of benefit for Kamuning amounting to PHP 2.42 million. The result of the contingent valuation analysis done (combining the data sets from Palawan and Bohol) using a least-squares method (i.e., bid function approach) showed a mean willingness-to-pay amount of PHP 44/month per individual. The different factors affecting the willingness to pay (25% level) include education, income and information (new). In terms of the recreation/ecotourism value of mangroves, the estimated values in Banacon, Bohol, and Kamuning, Palawan, were PHP 83,079 and PHP 2769, respectively.
