Femtosecond transient absorption study on relaxation intermediates in oxymyoglobin
Ishizaka, Shoji,Wada, Teruhide,Kitamura, Noboru Korean Society of Photoscience 2009 Photochemical & photobiological sciences Vol.8 No.4
We conducted femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy of oxymyoglobin ($MbO_2$) in the wavelength region of 450-750 nm to observe the charge transfer (CT) state of the heme in $MbO_2$. The transient absorption spectrum just after photoexcitation (t = 0-0.25 ps) was assigned to superposition of $S_1-S_n$ absorption (450-750 nm) and ground-state bleaching (540 and 580 nm) of $MbO_2$. At t > 0.25 ps, a new absorption band appeared at around 680 nm with the decay time of ~5 ps. This broad absorption band was similar to that of a porphyrin cation. Hence, we concluded that this absorption band was attributed to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) state of the heme. The proposed photophysical pathways suggested that formation of the LMCT state was the key event in the excited state relaxation of the heme in $MbO_2$.
Error Analysis on Distribution-based Frequency Estimator
Asami Ishizaka,Masuhiro Nitta,Kiyotaka Kato 제어로봇시스템학회 2010 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.10
Frequency estimation is a useful technology for analyzing oscillatory phenomena. In these days, there is a demand for rapid and highly accurate frequency estimator. Though various frequency estimation methods have been proposed, most of them can not respond to the demand. An algebraic approach is succeeded in achieving the demand but it requires a lot of multiple integrations due to eliminating differential operations. The present paper proposes a frequency estimator of a sinusoidal signal based on the notion of distribution theory. Then the estimator is realized by single integrations. The proposed method relaxes the complexity of multiple integrations into single integrations but the integration is theoretically evaluated over the infinite interval (-∞,∞). The paper firstly reduces the infinite interval to a finite observation interval [0,T] and secondly approximates the integration by a numerical integration. The authors introduce Gaussian function as a test function and perform an error analysis to ensure the accuracy of the frequency estimator. As a result of the error analysis, the suitable conditions of the Gaussian function are clarified. Under the derived conditions, the authors confirmed that the proposed frequency estimator brings out enough the estimation performance.

This paper was written based on a report of the Post Olympic Forum (organized by the Institute of Japanese Studies, Hallym University) at Gangneung Green City Experience Center(E-ZEN) in Gangneung on 3 July 2018. The PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games were held in Korea in February 2018 and generated significant legacies. One of the most important challenges is to reuse the Olympic venues and public spaces after the games. This paper is by no means a thorough review, but provides some issues that olympic cities, including Pyeongchang and Gangneung, will be facing with the case of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games in Japan. Since the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games were held approximately 20 years ago, the Nagano experience can provide important lessons for Pyeongchang and Gangneung considering the legacies of the Olympics. In this paper, I will delve into 1) the evaluating and exploring the Olympic legacies: tangible and intangible/ positive and negative/ temporal changes after the Olympics, 2) the outstanding amounts of municipal bonds and the maintenance costs for the athletic venues which has become a huge burden for municipal budgets in Nagano, 3) some volunteer organizations, and 4) the changes of small villages, including Karuizawa and Hakuba, in Nagano after hosting the Olympics.

Over the past decade, the Japanese government and Japanese universities have increased student mobility, both inbound and outbound, to accelerate the internationalization of higher education. However, student mobility was halted in early 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and international students who had planned to engage in a traditional study abroad program could not enter Japan. The current study examined whether the unexpected implementation of online distance classes because of the pandemic affected the learning strategies of graduate students, including international students. In addition, we investigated whether the online courses functioned as an alternative to face-to-face classes. An analysis using structural equation modeling revealed that the period of enrollment, self-regulation, and country of residence were factors that influenced help-seeking behavior. Graduate students who had enrolled before the pandemic and already experienced face-to-face classes were more likely to actively seek help from instructors and classmates in online classes. Furthermore, graduate students who were unable to enter the country but were taking classes online also tended to actively engage in help-seeking from their instructors and classmates. Students’ experiences of the sudden change to distance learning suggest that, to ensure a sustainable teaching and learning environment in various contexts, instructors should use class designs that consider distance learning, particularly designs that enhance students’ help-seeking, even under normal circumstances. In addition, ensuring sufficient online/virtual spaces for communication among teachers and students is important.

To distinguish true red tide water (particularly Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms) from non-red tide water (false satellite high chlorophyll water) in the South Sea of Korea, we developed a systematic classification method using spectral information from MODIS level products and applied it to five different harmful algal bloom events. Red tide and nonred tide waters were classified based on four different criteria. The first step revealed that the radiance peaks of potential red tide water occurred at 555 and 678 nm. The second step separated optically different waters that were influenced by relatively low and high contributions of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) (including detritus) to chlorophyll. The third and fourth steps discriminated red tide water from non-red tide water based on the blue-to-green ratio in areas with lower and higher contributions of CDOM to chlorophyll, respectively. After applying the red tide classification (using the four criteria), the spectral response of the red tide water, which is influenced by pigment concentration, showed different slopes for the blue and green bands (lower slope at blue bands and higher slope at green bands). The opposite result was found for non-red tide water, due to decreasing phytoplankton absorption and increasing detritus/CDOM absorption at blue bands. The results were well matched with the discoloration of water (blue to dark red/brown) and delineated the areal coverage of C. polykrikoides blooms, revealing the nature of spatial and temporal variations in red tides. This simple spectral classification method led to increase user accuracy for C. polykrikoides and non-red tide blooms (>46% and >97%) and provided a more reliable and robust identification of red tides over a wide range of oceanic environments than was possible using chlorophyll a concentration, chlorophyll anomaly, fluorescence analysis, or proposed red tide detection algorithms.
