Background and Purpose: As it becomes an aging society, interest in senile diseases is increasing. Alzheimer’s dementia (AD) and osteoporosis are representative senile diseases. Various studies have reported that AD and osteoporosis share many risk factors that affect each other’s incidence. This aimed to determine if active medication treatment of AD could affect the development of osteoporosis. Methods: The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service provided data consisting of diagnosis, demographics, prescription drug, procedures, medical materials, and healthcare resources. In this study, data of all AD patients in South Korea who were registered under the national health insurance system were obtained. The cohort underwent conversion to an Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership–Common Data Model version 5 format. Results: This study included 11,355 individuals in the good persistent group and an equal number of 11,355 individuals in the poor persistent group from the National Health Claims database for AD drug treatment. In primary analysis, the risk of osteoporosis was significantly higher in the poor persistence group than in the good persistence group (hazard ratio, 1.20 [95% confidence interval, 1.09–1.32]; p<0.001). Conclusions: We found that the good persistence group treated with anti-dementia drugs for AD was associated with a significant lower risk of osteoporosis in this nationwide study. Further studies are needed to clarify the pathophysiological link in patients with two chronic diseases.

C와 C++는 컴파일된 결과물의 실행 속도가 타 프로그래밍 언어로 작성된 것보다 빠르고 기존의 시스템과 호환성이 좋다는 점 등의 장점을 갖고 있기 때문에 많은 프로그래머들로부터 여전히 사랑받는 프로그래밍 언어이다. 하지만 C와 C++로 생성된 프로그램은 버퍼 오버플로 취약점과 같은 다양한 메모리 커럽션 취약점을 갖고 있기 때문에 쉽게 외부의 공격자들에게 노출된다. 따라서 사용자가 이와 같은 언어로 생성된 프로그램을 안전하게 실행하기 위해서는 시스템에 신뢰할 수 있는 방어 기법이 미리 적용되어 있어야만 한다. 본 연구에서는 메모리 커럽션 취약점을 이용한 공격을 탐지하기 위한 기법 중 하나인 Multi-variant Execution Environment (MVEE)를 소개하고, MVEE의 핵심 요소 기술인 레플리카 생성 기법들에 대하여 설명하고 비교·분석하고자 한다.

소프트웨어 방식의 시스템 감시 기법이 가지는 태생적인 단점으로 인해 최근에는 별도의 하드웨어를 추가하여 시스템을 감시하는 여러 기법들이 소개되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 하드웨어 기반의 감시 기법이 소프트웨어 기반의 감시 기법에 대해 가지는 이점에 대해 언급하고, 여러 가지 하드웨어 기반 감시기법에 대한 동작 방법 및 특징들에 대해 살펴보도록 한다.
Architectural Supports to Protect OS Kernels from Code-Injection Attacks and Their Applications

<P>The kernel code injection is a common behavior of kernel-compromising attacks where the attackers aim to gain their goals by manipulating an OS kernel. Several security mechanisms have been proposed to mitigate such threats, but they all suffer from non-negligible performance overhead. This article introduces a hardware reference monitor, called Kargos, which can detect the kernel code injection attacks with nearly zero performance cost. Kargos monitors the behaviors of an OS kernel from outside the CPU through the standard bus interconnect and debug interface available with most major microprocessors. By watching the execution traces and memory access events in the monitored target system, Kargos uncovers attempts to execute malicious code with the kernel privilege. On top of this, we also applied the architectural supports for Kargos to the detection of ROP attacks. KS-Stack is the hardware component that builds and maintains the shadow stacks using the existing supports to detect this ROP attacks. According to our experiments, Kargos detected all the kernel code injection attacks that we tested, yet just increasing the computational loads on the target CPU by less than 1% on average. The performance overhead of the KS-Stack was also less than 1%.</P>

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Male hypogonadism is a condition where the body does not produce enough testosterone and significantly impacts health. Age, obesity, genetics, and oxidative stress are some physiological factors that may contribute to testosterone deficiency. Previous studies have shown many pharmacological benefits of Schisandra chinensis (S. chinensis) Baillon as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. However, the molecular mechanism of attenuating hypogonadism is yet to be well established. This research was undertaken to study the effects of S. chinensis extract (SCE) on testosterone deficiency. MATERIALS/METHODS: S. chinensis fruit was pulverized and extracted using 60% aqueous ethanol. HPLC analysis was performed to analyze and quantify the lignans of the SCE. RESULTS: The 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) scavenging assays confirmed that the SCE and its major lignans (schisandrol A and gomisin N) inhibit oxidative stress. Effects of SCE analysis on the testosterone level under oxidative stress conditions revealed that both schisandrol A and gomisin N were able to recover the lowered testosterone levels. Through mRNA expression of TM3 Leydig cell, we observed that the SCE lignans were able to induce the enzymes involved in testosterone biosynthesis-related genes such as 3β-HSD4 (P < 0.01 for SCE, and P < 0.001 for schisandrol A and gomisin N), 17β-HSD3 (P < 0.001 for SCE, schisandrol A and gomisin N), and 17, 20-desmolase (P < 0.01 for schisandrol A, and P < 0.001 for SCE and gomisin N). CONCLUSIONS: These results support that SCE and its active components could be potential therapeutic agents for regulating and increasing testosterone production.
