The History and Meaning of the MEGA Project from its Inception until 1990

        Rolf Hecker(롤프 헤커) 경상대학교 사회과학연구원(마르크스주의 연구) 2010 마르크스주의 연구 Vol.7 No.4

This article treats of the history of the Marx Engels Gesamtausgabe, or MEGA, edition of Marx and Engels’ collected works. The edition began under the editorship of David Ryazonov in 1924, and the article traces the evolution of the edition from this beginning until 1990. During this time, the edition came into being as the product of a particular tension: a tension between its claim to scientific status, on the one hand, and the dogmas of Marxism Leninism, on the other. The article explores the political pressures on the MEGA that occurred in the 1930’s, the 1950’s, and the 1970’s, and also the transitional issues that occurred in the wake of 1989. The varying scope of the edition’s contents during these historical periods, and the political and editorial reasons for this variation, are explored. Special attention is given to the relationship between Berlin and Moscow in the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s, with respect to the edition. Finally, the article notes the greatly reduced support for the MEGA staff in the post 1989 period, and, in conclusion, explores the international reception of the MEGA volumes.

North Korea’s Stockpiles of Fissile Material

        Siegfried S. Hecker,CHAIM BRAUN,Chris Lawrence 한국학술연구원 2016 Korea Observer Vol.47 No.4

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests and is believed to be rapidly increasing the size and sophistication of its nuclear arsenal. Increased sophistication, particularly the ability to miniaturize nuclear devices, requires more nuclear tests. The size of the arsenal is limited primarily by the stockpile of fissile material — plutonium and highly enriched uranium (HEU). Current plutonium inventories are estimated with moderate confidence to be in the range of 20 to 40 kg, sufficient for the manufacture of 4 to 8 plutonium bombs. HEU inventories are estimated with much greater uncertainty to be in the range of 200 to 450 kg, sufficient for 10 to 25 HEU bombs. Annual production rates are estimated to be less than 6 kg of plutonium and ~150 kg HEU.

Two-State GMS-based Friction Model for Precise Control Applications

Fernando Villegas,Rogelio Lorenzo Hecker,Miguel Peña 한국정밀공학회 2016 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.17 No.5

The capability of a model to represent the complex friction behavior is particularly important for systems where friction has a major impact on motion precision. In this work a GMS-based model is proposed which would require only two states, aiming to simplify the implementation of control laws that require friction models capable of representing presliding friction. Simulations of the proposed model are provided, showing that it keeps the main properties of the GMS model, like hysteresis with nonlocal memory, non-drifting behavior and friction lag. Also, an experimental comparison of the performance of model-based compensation for the proposed twostate model and for the complete GMS model is presented for a linear motor system with linear guides, showing promising results.

Role of platelet CD40 ligand for endothelial cell-monocyte interaction in the presence of flow

        Andreas H. Wagner,Manuel Schwarz,Gerd König,Markus Hecker 한국유변학회 2014 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.26 No.4

CD40 ligand (CD154)-induced ultra-large von Willebrand factor (vWF) multimer-mediated endothelial cellplatelet-monocyte interaction may play an important role in adaptive and maladaptive vascular remodelingprocesses. Here we analyzed the impact of and conditions favouring the deposition of these multimers onthe endothelial cell (EC) surface by way of CD40-CD154 co-stimulation in settings mimicking differentforms of blood flow. Upon exposure to low oscillatory shear stress and sCD154, a release of vWF multimerscomparable to histamine stimulation was monitored on the EC surface in a string-like fashion. Moreover,ex vivo perfused carotid arteries of wild type mice at low laminar shear stress rates showed a luminalrelease of vWF as ultra-large vWF multimers (ULVWF) upon stimulation with sCD154 which was absentin blood vessels of CD40 knockout mice. The observed CD40- and flow-dependent vWF release from intactendothelial cells and subsequent vWF multimer formation may facilitate adhesion and subsequent activationof circulating platelets at atherosclerotic predilection sites, which are characterized by disturbed flow patterns. This in turn may amplify endothelial cell-monocyte interaction, thus possibly initiating or promotingearly atherosclerotic lesion formation.

      • Guidelines for the next 10 years of proteomics

        Wilkins, Marc R.,Appel, Ron D.,Van Eyk, Jennifer E.,Chung, Maxey C. M.,,rg, Angelika,Hecker, Michael,Huber, Lukas A.,Langen, Hanno,Link, Andrew J.,Paik, Young-Ki,Patterson, Scott D.,Pennington, WILEY-VCH Verlag 2006 Proteomics Vol.6 No.1

In the last ten years, the field of proteomics has expanded at a rapid rate. A range of exciting new technology has been developed and enthusiastically applied to an enormous variety of biological questions. However, the degree of stringency required in proteomic data generation and analysis appears to have been underestimated. As a result, there are likely to be numerous published findings that are of questionable quality, requiring further confirmation and/or validation. This manuscript outlines a number of key issues in proteomic research, including those associated with experimental design, differential display and biomarker discovery, protein identification and analytical incompleteness. In an effort to set a standard that reflects current thinking on the necessary and desirable characteristics of publishable manuscripts in the field, a minimal set of guidelines for proteomics research is then described. These guidelines will serve as a set of criteria which editors of PROTEOMICS will use for assessment of future submissions to the Journal.

Higher Blood Pressure during Endovascular Thrombectomy in Anterior Circulation Stroke Is Associated with Better Outcomes

        Slaven Pikija,Vladimir Trkulja,Christian Ramesmayer,Johannes S. Mutzenbach,Monika Killer-Oberpfalzer,Constantin Hecker,Nele Bubel,Michael Ulrich Füssel,Johann Sellner 대한뇌졸중학회 2018 Journal of stroke Vol.20 No.3

Background and Purpose Reports investigating the relationship between in-procedure blood pressure (BP) and outcomes in patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) due to anterior circulation stroke are sparse and contradictory. Methods Consecutive EVT-treated adults (modern stent retrievers, BP managed in line with the recommendations, general anesthesia, invasive BP measurements) were evaluated for associations of the rate of in-procedure systolic BP (SBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) excursions to >120%/<80% of the reference values (serial measurements at anesthesia induction) and of the reference BP/weighted in-procedure mean BP with post-procedure imaging outcomes (ischemic lesion volume [ILV], hemorrhages) and 3-month functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale [mRS], score 0 to 2 vs. 3 to 6). Results Overall 164 patients (70.7% pharmacological reperfusion, 80.5% with good collaterals, 73.8% with successful reperfusion) were evaluated for ILV (range, 0 to 581 cm3) and hemorrhages (incidence 17.7%). Higher rate of in-procedure SBP/MAP excursions to >120% was independently associated with lower ILV, while higher in-procedure mean SBP/MAP was associated with lower odds of hemorrhages. mRS 0-2 was achieved in 75/155 (48.4%) evaluated patients (nine had missing mRS data). Higher rate of SBP/MAP excursions to >120% and higher reference SBP/MAP were independently associated with higher odds of mRS 0-2, while higher ILV was associated with lower odds of mRS 0-2. Rate of SBP/MAP excursions to <80% was not associated with any outcome. Conclusions In the EVT-treated patients with BP managed within the recommended limits, a better functional outcome might be achieved by targeting in-procedure BP that exceeds the preprocedure values by more than 20%.
