Optimum cost design of RC columns using artificial bee colony algorithm

Hasan Tahsin Ozturk,Ahmet Durmus 국제구조공학회 2013 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.45 No.5

Optimum cost design of columns subjected to axial force and uniaxial bending moment is presented in this paper. In the formulation of the optimum design problem, the height and width of the column, diameter and number of reinforcement bars are treated as design variables. The design constraints are implemented according to ACI 318-08 and studies in the literature. The objective function is taken as the cost of unit length of the column consisting the cost of concrete, steel, and shuttering. The solution of the design problem is obtained using the artificial bee colony algorithm which is one of the recent additions to metaheuristic techniques. The Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm is imitated the foraging behaviors of bee swarms. In application of this algorithm to the constraint problem, Deb's constraint handling method is used. Obtained results showed that the optimum value of numerical example is nearly same with the existing values in the literature.

Vibration analysis of a pre-stressed laminated composite curved bea

Hasan Ozturk 국제구조공학회 2015 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.19 No.3

In this study, natural frequency analysis of a large deflected cantilever laminated composite beam fixed at both ends, which forms the case of a pre-stressed curved beam, is investigated. The laminated beam is considered to have symmetric and asymmetric lay-ups and the effective flexural modulus of the beam is used in the analysis. In order to obtain the pre-stressed composite curved beam case, an external vertical concentrated load is applied at the free end of a cantilever laminated composite beam and then the loading point of the deflected beam is fixed. The non-linear deflection curve of the flexible beam undergoing large deflection is obtained by the Reversion Method. The curved laminated composite beam is modeled by using the Finite Element Method with a straight-beam element approach. The effects of orientation angle and vertical load on the natural frequency parameter for the first four modes are examined and the results obtained are given in graphics. It has been found that the effect of the load parameter, which forms the curved laminated beam, on the natural frequency parameter, almost disappears after a certain value of the load parameter. This certain value differs for each laminated curved beam and each vibration mode.

Effects of Autochthonous Yeast Cultures on Some Quality Characteristics of Traditional Turkish Fermented Sausage "Sucuk"

Ozturk, Ismet,Sagdic, Osman,Yetim, Hasan Korean Society for Food Science of Animal Resource 2021 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.41 No.2

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of yeast cultures (Candida zeylanoides and Debaryomyces hansenii) isolated from traditionally dry fermented Turkish sucuks, on some physicochemical and microbiological properties of the product. Eight different batches of the sucuks were produced by the inoculation of yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) cultures (Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus sakei) in different combinations. The sucuks were ripened for 12 days and analyzed at 1st, 6th, and 12th days of ripening. Percent moisture content, pH, water activity (aw) and residual nitrite values of the sucuk inoculated with the yeast cultures were higher at the end of the ripening. The use of yeast cultures decreased hardness, gumminess, and chewiness values of the sucuk while increased adhesiveness values. Major volatile groups were aldehydes, terpenes, and sulphur compounds in the sucuk samples. The most noticeable results were for sensory properties of the sucuk that were positively improved by the yeast cultures.

Effect of Gamma-Irradiation on Some Chemical Characteristics and Volatile Content of Linseed

        Hasan Yalcin,Ismet Ozturk,Mehmet Hayta,Osman Sagdic,Tuncay Gumus 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.10

The effect of irradiation (2.5, 4.0, 5.5, and 7.0 kGy) on chemical properties and volatile contents of linseed was investigated. Consistent decreases were observed in both protein and oil content of the irradiated linseed samples with increasing irradiation doses. The ash content of the irradiated linseed samples increased significantly (P<.05) with increasing irradiation doses except for 5.5 kGy. Irradiation treatment caused irregular changes in palmitic and stearic acid content. Although styrene and p-xylene content decreased as a result of irradiation, 1-hexanol content only decreased at 7.0 kGy. Benzaldehyde, p-cymene, and nonanol were not determined at irradiation doses above 4.0 kGy

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Gene Val66Met Polymorphism Is a Risk Factor for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in a Turkish Sample

        Onder Ozturk,Burge Kabukcu Basay,Ahmet Buber,Omer Basay,Huseyin Alacam,Ali Bacanlı,S˛ enay Görücü Yılmaz,Mehmet Emin Erdal,Hasan Herken,Eyup Sabri Ercan 대한신경정신의학회 2016 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.13 No.5

ObjectiveaaAttention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that negatively affects different areas of life. We aimed to evaluate the associations between the Val66Met polymorphism of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and ADHD and to assess the effect of the BDNF polymorphism on the neurocognitive profile and clinical symptomatology in ADHD. MethodsaaTwo hundred one ADHD cases and 99 typically developing subjects (TD) between the ages of 8 and 15 years were involved in the study. All subjects were evaluated using a complete neuropsychological battery, Child Behavior Checklist, the Teacher’s Report Form (TRF) and the DSM-IV Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale-teacher and parent forms. ResultsaaThe GG genotype was significantly more frequent in the patients with ADHD than in the TD controls, and the GG genotype was also significantly more frequent in the ADHD-combined (ADHD-C) subtype patients than in the TDs. However, there were no significant associations of the BDNF polymorphism with the ADHD subtypes or neurocognitive profiles of the patients. The teacher-assessed hyperactivity and inattention symptom count and the total score were higher, and the appropriately behaving subtest score of the TRF was lower in the GG genotypes than in the GA and AA (i.e., the A-containing) genotypes. ConclusionaaWe found a positive association between the BDNF gene Val66Met polymorphism and ADHD, and this association was observed specifically in the ADHD-C subtype and not the ADHD-predominantly inattentive subtype. Our findings support that the Val66Met polymorphism of BDNF gene might be involved in the pathogenesis of ADHD. Furthermore Val66Met polymorphism of BDNF gene may be more closely associated with hyperactivity rather than inattention.

The Effect of Single Dose Methylphenidate on Neurometabolites according to COMT Gene Val158Met Polymorphism in the Patient with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Study Using Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

        Onder Ozturk,Huseyin Alacam,Burge Kabukcu Basay,Omer Basay,Ahmet Buber,Ozlem Izci Ay,Kadir Agladıoglu,Mehmet Emin Erdal,Hasan Herken 대한정신약물학회 2016 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.14 No.2

Objective: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the effects of a single dose of methylphenidate (Mph) on neurometabolite levels according to polymorphisms of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene. Methods: This study evaluated the neurometabolite levels including N-acetylaspartate (NAA), creatine (Cr), and choline (Cho) of ADHD patients, before and after treatment with Mph (10 mg) according to the presence of COMT polymorphisms. The spectra were obtained from the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), cerebellum, and striatum. Results: The NAA levels of the val/val and val genotype carriers (val/val and val/met genotypes) increased in the DLPFC and ACC, respectively, following Mph treatment. The NAA/Cr ratio was lower in the DLPFC of val carriers than in the met/met genotype carriers prior to Mph administration. The Cho levels of the val/met genotype and val carriers increased in the striatum following Mph treatment. Following Mph treatment, the Cr levels of the met/met genotype carriers were higher than those of the val/met genotype and val carriers. Additionally, after Mph treatment, there was a significant increase in Cr levels in the DLPFC of the met/met genotype carriers but a significant decrease in such levels in the striatum of val/val genotype carriers. Conclusion: These findings suggest that polymorphisms of the COMT gene can account for individual differences in neurochemical responses to Mph among ADHD patients. Therefore, further studies are needed to fully characterize the effects of the Val158met polymorphism of the COMT gene on treatment outcomes in patients with ADHD.

Buckling load optimization of laminated plates via artificial bee colony algorithm

Topal, Umut,Ozturk, Hasan Tahsin Techno-Press 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.52 No.4

In this present work, Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm (ABCA) is used to optimize the stacking sequences of simply supported antisymmetric laminated composite plates with criticial buckling load as the objective functions. The fibre orientations of the layers are selected as the optimization design variables with the aim to find the optimal laminated plates. In order to perform the optimization based on the ABCA, a special code is written in MATLAB software environment. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate this optimization algorithm for different plate aspect ratios, number of layers and load ratios.

Antithrombotic effect of epigallocatechin gallate on the patency of arterial microvascular anastomoses

Igde, Murat,Ozturk, Mehmet Onur,Yasar, Burak,Bulam, Mehmet Hakan,Ergani, Hasan Murat,Unlu, Ramazan Erkin Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2019 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.46 No.3

Background Microvascular anastomosis patency is adversely affected by local and systemic factors. Impaired intimal recovery and endothelial mechanisms promoting thrombus formation at the anastomotic site are common etiological factors of reduced anastomosis patency. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a catechin derivative belonging to the flavonoid subgroup and is present in green tea (Camellia sinensis). This study investigated the effects of EGCG on the structure of vessel tips used in microvascular anastomoses and evaluated its effects on thrombus formation at an anastomotic site. Methods Thirty-six adult male Wistar albino rats were used in the study. The right femoral artery was cut and reanastomosed. The rats were divided into two groups (18 per group) and were systemically administered either EGCG or saline. Each group were then subdivided into three groups, each with six rats. Axial histological sections were taken from segments 1 cm proximal and 1 cm distal to the microvascular anastomosis site on days 5, 10, and 14. Results Thrombus formation was significantly different between the EGCG and control groups on day 5 (P=0.015) but not on days 10 or 14. The mean luminal diameter was significantly greater in the EGCG group on days 5 (P=0.002), 10 (P=0.026), and 14 (P=0.002). Intimal thickening was significantly higher on days 5 (P=0.041) and 10 (P=0.02). Conclusions EGCG showed vasodilatory effects and led to reduced early thrombus formation after microvascular repair. Similar studies on venous anastomoses and random or axial pedunculated skin flaps would also contribute valuable findings relevant to this topic.

      • Effective mode shapes of multi-storey frames subjected to moving train loads

        Demirtas, Salih,Ozturk, Hasan Techno-Press 2020 Coupled systems mechanics Vol.9 No.4

This paper deals with the effect of the mode shapes on the dynamic response of a multi-storey frame subjected to moving train loads which are modelled as loads of constant intervals with constant velocity using the finite element method. The multi-storey frame is modelled as a number of Bernoulli-Euler beam elements. First, the first few modes of the multi-storey frame are determined. Then, the effects of force span length to beam length ratio and velocity on dynamic magnification factor (DMF) are evaluated via 3D velocity-force span length to beam length ratio-DMF graphics and its 2D projections. By using 3D and 2D graphics, the directions of critical speeds that force the structure under resonance conditions are determined. Last, the mode shapes related to these directions are determined by the time history and frequency response graphs. This study has been limited by the vibration of the frame in the vertical direction.
