The pitch-loblolly pine hybrid (Pinus rigida 9 P. taeda) has useful characteristics of the parents, but its exploitation is hindered by restrictions of conventional breeding and propagation methods. This study was undertaken to establish an effective in vitro system for propagating pitch-loblolly hybrid pine through somatic embryogenesis and to unravel the relationship between the efficiency of embryogenic tissue initiation and zygotic embryo development. To initiate embryogenic tissue, megagametophytes of developing seeds were used as explants. Seeds were collected weekly, examined, and tested during June and July 2004. The medium and seed collection date were the most important factors for the successful somatic embryogenesis of P. rigida 9 P. taeda. Five embryogenic lines were obtained using a modified P. taeda basal medium, and the highest initiation rate was 0.55%, for seeds collected in 2 weeks, between July 3 and 16. Histological observation revealed that zygotic embryos of those seeds were mostly at the proembryonic stage or in transition to precotyledonary stages. For the successful maturation of somatic embryos, abscisic acid and gellan gum were needed in the medium. The results show that, although further tests and development are required, somatic embryogenesis could provide a viable option for propagating P. rigida 9 P. taeda hybrids.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major chronic disease which increases global health problems. Diabetes-induced renal damage is associated with inflammation and fibrosis. Alpha (AT) and gamma-tocopherols (GT) have shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in inflammation-mediated injuries. The primary aim of this study was to investigate effects of AT and GT supplementations on hyperglycemia induced acute kidney inflammation in alloxan induced diabetic mice with different levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG). MATERIALS/METHODS: Diabetes was induced by injection of alloxan monohydrate (150 mg/kg, i.p) in ICR mice (5.5-week-old, male) and mice were subdivided according to their FBG levels and treated with different diets for 2 weeks; CON: non-diabetic mice, m-DMC: diabetic control mice with mild FBG levels (250 mg/dl ≤ FBG ≤ 450 mg/dl), m-AT: m-DM mice fed AT supplementation (35 mg/kg diet), m-GT: m-DM mice with GT supplementation (35 mg/kg diet), s-DMC: diabetic control mice with severe FBG levels (450 mg/dl < FBG), s-AT: s-DM mice with AT supplementation, s-GT: s-DM mice with GT supplementation. RESULTS: Both AT and GT supplementations showed similar beneficial effects on NFκB associated inflammatory response (phosphorylated inhibitory kappa B-α, interleukin-1β, C-reactive protein, monocyte chemotactic protein-1) and pre-fibrosis (tumor growth factor β-1 and protein kinase C-II) as well as an antioxidant emzyme, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in diabetic mice. On the other hands, AT and GT showed different beneficial effects on kidney weight, FBG, and oxidative stress associated makers (malondialdehyde, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase) except HO-1. In particular, GT significantly preserved kidney weight in m-DM and improved FBG levels in s-DM and malondialdehyde and catalase in m- and s-DM, while AT significantly attenuated FBG levels in m-DM and improved glutathione peroxidase in m- and s-DM. CONCLUSIONS: the results suggest that AT and GT with similarities and differences would be considered as beneficial nutrients to modulate hyperglycemia induced acute renal inflammation. Further research with careful approach is needed to confirm beneficial effects of tocopherols in diabetes with different FBG levels for clinical applications.

Graphic Abstract
A robust means of fabricating skin-penetrating and compatible nanocarriers comprising poly(D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) is reported. The resultant nanocapsules have the ability to load biologically active ingredients and selectively release them through the epidermis lipid layer. Their release of genistein (left figure) is determined to be diffusion-controlled, and they are shown to successfully deliver molecules, such as nile red (right figure), into biopsied skin samples.

Multi-stem Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora f. multicaulis Uyeki) is known as the forma of Korean red pine and is distributed in both Korea and Japan. Unlike Korean red pine having one or two main stems, it grows with many stems which are branched from the lower part of the tree trunk. Owing to its unique stem shape and ornamental value, it has been used as a precious ornamental tree. A total of 14 individuals with distinct characteristics were collected between 1998 and 2000 to develop new cultivars in Pinus spp. with high added value. After asexual propagation through grafting, at least 20 seedlings per tree were planted in a test field and the phenotypic characteristics were investigated. Based on the results, three individuals were re-selected and tested for uniformity and stability for 3 years. Finally, one individual with evident conical crown form was renamed as ‘Yedasol’ and was registered as a new cultivar in 2021. In addition, ‘Yedasol’ has high ornamental value derived from its thinly cracked gray-brown bark, soft needle leaf, reddish-purple male strobilus, and dense cone arrangement (Registration No. 255).
