A Numerical Study of Various Plastically Unstable Behaviors in Tension and Compression

Gotoh, Manabu 대한금속재료학회(대한금속학회) 1998 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.4 No.4

Various types of behavior due to plastic instability under uniaxial tension and compression are numerically investigated regarding sheet materials, plane strain blocks, and cylindrical bars and hollow cylinders. The code GOLDA for analysis of large elastic-plastic deformation previously developed by the author is used, which is one of quasi-static explicit FEM programs. Both of diffuse type and localized type of instability are concerned with. The role of vertex-hardening in plastic instability is payed attention, by using the J2G (J2-Gotoh's corner theory) as the plasticity constitutive equation, which was proposed previously by the author and is a kind of vertex-hardening theory. Following results are mainly derived. 1) In plane strain tension, shear-type strain localization is realized by the use oh J2G, but not by the conventional J2F (J2-flow theory). In axisymmetric tension of a cylindrical solid bar, however, such strain localization would never appear even by J2G, as expected by the experiment. 2) In axisymmetric tension of a hollow cylinder under the condition of no contractlion of its bore (therefore, in almost plane strain state with no circumferential strain), it is found that shear-type strain localization could occur. This is realized again by the use of J2G, whereas J2F never allows such strain localization. 3) In compression under the embedded edges condition, it is found that a sheet with initial aspect ratio of 2:1 (in height:breadth) yields double barreling, whereas a plane strain block yields double barreling at the initial aspect ratio of 3:1, not at 2:1 through expected from the conventional slip-line theory. As for a cylindrical solid bar, double barreling appears for the initial aspect ratio of 2:1 but only for higher n-vaiue (the strain hardening exponent), say n=p.5. 4) As for barreling mode, when thick-walled axisymmetric tubes with the initial ratio of thickness to inner diameter l/5 to 1/3 are compressed axially, corresponding to the initial aspect ratios of 3:1, 2:1 and 1:1, triple barreling, double barreling and single barreling appear, respectively. 5) It is found that thin-walled tubes buckle in a progressive periodic mode with almost stationary compressive load under axial compression. Thus it can be used as a simplified model for buckling of more complex structures such as the honeycomb.

      • Molting inhibition of Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) appears to be caused by an acaricide rather than a natural product

        Tetsuo Gotoh,Tomoko Korenaga,Satomi Ikejima,Tsutomu Hoshino 한국응용곤충학회 2008 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2008 No.10

Population density of the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor), in Japanese pear orchards remained low until mid-August, even after inoculation of pear leaves with a considerable number of adult female P. citri from May onwards. This raised the possibility that pear leaves contain a natural compound that suppresses an increase of P. citri populations. The rate of development from larva to adult was significantly lower on leaves collected in July than on leaves collected earlier or later, in several years. The population suppression was caused by molting inhibition and ovicidal activity, according to our close observation in the laboratory [Gotoh and Kubota (1997) Exp. Appl. Acarol. 21: 343-356]. To clarify whether a natural pear compound caused this molting inhibition, a methanol crude extract of pear leaves was isolated and added to a newly developed artificial diet, consisting of sodium caseinate, sucrose, levulose, glucose and inositol. The compound extracted from pear leaves resulted in the molting inhibition as observed on pear leaves. Based on infrared and NMR spectral analysis, the compound extracted from pear leaves closely resembled the synthetic acaricide hexythiazox. Furthermore, the LC50-values of the compound extracted from pear leaves for ovicidal activity of P. citri eggs and for inhibition of molting to protonymphs were similar to those of hexythiazox. These results strongly suggest that the molting deterrent extracted from pear leaves was in fact hexythiazox, an acaricide in use on pear trees, rather than a natural product. This suggestion becomes even stronger, considering that the molting inhibition was observed in a hexythiazox-spray year, but not in a non-spray year.

      • Model-driven experimental approach reveals the complex regulatory distribution of p53 by the circadian factor Period 2

Gotoh, Tetsuya,Kim, Jae Kyoung,Liu, Jingjing,Vila-Caballer, Marian,Stauffer, Philip E.,Tyson, John J.,Finkielstein, Carla V. National Academy of Sciences 2016 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF Vol.113 No.47

<P>The circadian clock and cell cycle networks are interlocked on the molecular level, with the core clock loop exerting a multilevel regulatory role over cell cycle components. This is particularly relevant to the circadian factor Period 2 (Per2), which modulates the stability of the tumor suppressor p53 in unstressed cells and transcriptional activity in response to genotoxic stress. Per2 binding prevents Mdm2-mediated ubiquitination of p53 and, therefore, its degradation, and oscillations in the peaks of Per2 and p53 were expected to correspond. However, our findings showed that Per2 and p53 rhythms were significantly out-of-phase relative to each other in cell lysates and in purified cytoplasmic fractions. These seemingly conflicting experimental data motivated the use of a combined theoretical and experimental approach focusing on the role played by Per2 in dictating the phase of p53 oscillations. Systematic modeling of all possible regulatory scenarios predicted that the observed phase relationship between Per2 and p53 could be simulated if (i) p53 was more stable in the nucleus than in the cytoplasm, (ii) Per2 associates to various ubiquitinated forms of p53, and (iii) Per2 mediated p53 nuclear import. These predictions were supported by a sevenfold increase in p53's half-life in the nucleus and by in vitro binding of Per2 to the various ubiquitinated forms of p53. Last, p53's nuclear shuttling was significantly favored by ectopic expression of Per2 and reduced because of Per2 down-regulation. Our combined theoretical/mathematical approach reveals how clock regulatory nodes can be inferred from oscillating time course data.</P>

The Japanese Wagyu beef industry: current situation and future prospects - A review

Gotoh, Takafumi,Nishimura, Takanori,Kuchida, Keigo,Mannen, Hideyuki Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.7

In Japan, Wagyu cattle include four Japanese breeds; Black, Brown, Shorthorn, and Polled. Today, the renowned brand name Wagyu includes not only cattle produced in Japan, but also cattle produced in countries such as Australia and the United States. In recent years, the intramuscular fat percentage in beef (longissimus muscle) from Japanese Black cattle has increased to be greater than 30%. The Japanese Black breed is genetically predisposed to producing carcass lipids containing higher concentrations of monounsaturated fatty acids than other breeds. However, there are numerous problems with the management of this breed including high production costs, disposal of untreated excrement, the requirement for imported feed, and food security risks resulting from various viral diseases introduced by imported feed. The feeding system needs to shift to one that is more efficient, and improves management for farmers, food security for consumers, and the health environment for residents of Japan. Currently, we are developing a metabolic programming and an information and communications technology (ICT, or Interne of Things) management system for Wagyu beef production as future systems. If successful, we will produce safe, high-quality Wagyu beef using domestic pasture resources while solving the problems of how to utilize increasing areas of abandoned agricultural land and to make use of the plant-based feed resources in Japan's mountainous areas.

Activation energy of hydrogen desorption from high-performance titanium oxide carrier-selective contacts with silicon oxide interlayers

        Gotoh Kazuhiro,Mochizuki Takeya,Hojo Tomohiko,Shibayama Yuki,Kurokawa Yasuyoshi,Akiyama Eiji,Usami Noritaka 한국물리학회 2021 Current Applied Physics Vol.21 No.-

The impact of hydrogen desorption on the electrical properties of TiOx on crystalline silicon (c-Si) with SiOy interlayers is studied for the development of high-performance TiOx carrier-selective contacts. Compared with the TiOx/c-Si heterocontacts, a lower surface recombination velocity of 9.6 cm/s and lower contact resistivity of 7.1 mΩ cm2 are obtained by using SiOy interlayers formed by mixture (often called SC2). The hydrogen desorption peaks arising from silicon dihydride (α1) and silicon monohydride (α2) on the c-Si surface of the asdeposited samples are observed. The α1 peak pressure of as-deposited heterocontacts with SiOx interlayers is lower than that of heterocontacts without a SiOy interlayer. Furthermore, the hydrogen desorption energies are found to be 1.76 and 2.13 eV for the TiOx/c-Si and TiOx/SC2-SiOy/c-Si heterocontacts, respectively. Therefore, the excellent passivation of the TiOx/SC2-SiOy/c-Si heterocontacts is ascribed to the relatively high rupture energy of bonding between Si and H atoms.

Chaotic Behavior of an Elastoplastic Bar in Tensile Test over a Wide Range of Strain-Rate A Numerical Investigation

        Gotoh, Manabu,Yamashita, Minoru 대한금속재료학회(대한금속학회) 1998 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.4 No.3

Numerical tensile tests of an elastoplastic cylindrical bar at various high strain-rates are performed by the use of a dynamic explicit FEM code (DYNA3D, a public domain version). The effects of mass (inertia) of the body, strain-rate and strain-rate sensitivity exponent (m-value) on the deformation pattern and the load curve are investigated. As for the material, strain dependent n-th power work hardening property is given by σ=Kε^n(1+ε)^m where a is strain-rate. The range of the prescribed average strain-rate is 50-1000/s where the tensile tests with constant average strain-rate and with constant tensile velocity are performed. Materials with higher density exert a greater influence on deformation mode at a high strain-rate. Even if the tensile speed is less than that of plastic wave propagation, deformation becomes non-uniform remarkably due to mass effect. It is unexpected that double necking occurs at certain computational conditions. The strain at maximum load point predicted by the numerical simulation does not coincide with the analytically predicted one. Maximum rate of decrease in cross sectional area within the straight portion of the bar is compared with Hart's instability criterion based on the imperfection in the cross section. The effect of a trivial change in material properties and the prescribed average strain-rate on the deformation pattern is remarkable in high rate tension over ε˙=400/s.

Characteristics and Health Benefit of Highly Marbled Wagyu and Hanwoo Beef

Gotoh, Takafumi,Joo, Seon-Tea Korean Society for Food Science of Animal Resource 2016 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.36 No.6

This review addresses the characteristics and health benefit of highly marbled Wagyu and Hanwoo beef. Marbling of Wagyu and Hanwoo beef has been increased in Japan and Korea to meet domestic consumer preferences. Wagyu and Hanwoo cattle have high potential of accumulating intramuscular fat (IMF) and producing highly marbled beef. The IMF content varies depending on the feeding of time, finishing diet, and breed type. IMF increases when feeding time is increased. The rate of IMF increase in grain-fed cattle is faster than that in pasture-fed cattle. Fatty acid composition are also different depending on breeds. Highly marbled Wagyu and Hanwoo beef have higher proportions of monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) due to higher concentrations of oleic acid. MUFAs have little effect on total cholesterol. They are heart-healthy dietary fat because they can lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol. Clinical trials have indicated that highly marbled beef does not increase LDL-cholesterol. This review also emphasizes that high oleic acid beef such as Wagyu and Hanwoo beef might be able to reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Life cycle of the lilac pyralid Palpita nigropunctalis (Bremer) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) on five oleaceous tree species

        Tetsuo Gotoh,Yuko Hagino,Kentaro Doke 한국응용곤충학회 2011 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.14 No.2

The seasonal abundance of Palpita nigropunctalis larvae was studied on five oleaceous tree species in Ibaraki, central Japan, for two years. The larval population peaked on sometree species in both spring and autumnwhile it peaked on other tree species only in autumn. In bimodal populations, the spring peaks consisted of larvae infesting leaves, while the autumn peaks consisted of larvae infesting various tree parts (flowers, fruits and leaves). Larval development was longer and pupal weights were lower on Ligustrum lucidum fruits than on Ligustrum japonicum fruits. Thus, L. japonicum fruits were suitable for larval development in autumn. First-instar larvae appeared to occur three times per year (in late April to earlyMay,mid to late September and early tomid October).Adultswere observed fromlateMarch to early April, midMay to early June, and early September to mid November at the census sites, showing that P. nigropunctalis had three generations a year. The percentage of females having premature ovaries were 64.3 and 12.5% at 15 °C under 14-h and 15-h photophases, respectively, and 28.6 and 25% at 20 °C under the respective photophases. These temperatures and photoperiods are typical of those inMay and June in the census sites. The ovaries of females collected in the field between late May and mid July were premature, in agreement with the laboratory experiments. The pupal duration was prolonged under the short photoperiod, especially at reduced temperatures. We discuss a possible life cycle of P. nigropunctalis in Ibaraki.
