Antimutagenic Effect of Aqueous Extract from Agaricus brasiliensis on Culture of Human Lymphocytes

        Paula H. Gameiro,Jose´ S. Nascimento,Beatriz H.G. Rocha,Clause F.B. Piana,Raquel A. Santos,Catarina S. Takahashi 한국식품영양과학회 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.2

The mushroom Agaricus brasiliensis (sun mushroom), native from the southeast of Brazil, is well known by its medicinal properties that include effects on diabetes, cholesterol levels, and osteoporosis. The antimutagenic effects of A. brasiliensis has been investigated recently and revealed some controversial results depending on the temperature by which the A. brasiliensis tea is obtained. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of the A. brasiliensis extract prepared in two different temperatures, 4°C and 25°C, on the doxorubicin-induced DNA strand breaks and chromosomal aberrations (CAs) in human lymphocytes. The results demonstrated that A. brasiliensis was able to reduce the DXR-induced DNA damage in both temperatures; however, the CA test was more sensitive to demonstrate a better reduction when the cells were treated with an extract obtained at 25°C. A. brasiliensis extract obtained in different temperatures exhibited antigenotoxic and anticlastogenic effects in human lymphocytes.

        Ad-Hoc Behavior in Opportunistic Radio

Mumtaz, Shahid,Marques, Paulo,Gameiro, Atilio,Rodriguez, Jonathan The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2009 Journal of communications and networks Vol.11 No.2

The application of mathematical analysis to the study of wireless ad hoc networks has met with limited success due to the complexity of mobility, traffic models and the dynamic topology. A scenario based universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) time division duplex (TDD) opportunistic cellular system with an ad hoc behaviour that operates over UMTS frequency division duplex (FDD) licensed cellular network is considered. In this paper, we present a new routing metric which overall improves system performance in terms of interference and routing which operate in an ad hoc network in an opportunistic manner. Therefore we develop a simulation tool that addresses the goal of analysis and assessment of UMTS TDD opportunistic radio system with ad hoc behavior in coexistence with a UMTS FDD primary cellular networks.

Lamb Production Costs: Analyses of Composition and Elasticities Analysis of Lamb Production Costs

Raineri, C.,Stivari, T.S.S.,Gameiro, A.H. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.8

Since lamb is a commodity, producers cannot control the price of the product they sell. Therefore, managing production costs is a necessity. We explored the study of elasticities as a tool for basing decision-making in sheep production, and aimed at investigating the composition and elasticities of lamb production costs, and their influence on the performance of the activity. A representative sheep production farm, designed in a panel meeting, was the base for calculation of lamb production cost. We then performed studies of: i) costs composition, and ii) cost elasticities for prices of inputs and for zootechnical indicators. Variable costs represented 64.15% of total cost, while 21.66% were represented by operational fixed costs, and 14.19% by the income of the factors. As for elasticities to input prices, the opportunity cost of land was the item to which production cost was more sensitive: a 1% increase in its price would cause a 0.2666% increase in lamb cost. Meanwhile, the impact of increasing any technical indicator was significantly higher than the impact of rising input prices. A 1% increase in weight at slaughter, for example, would reduce total cost in 0.91%. The greatest obstacle to economic viability of sheep production under the observed conditions is low technical efficiency. Increased production costs are more related to deficient zootechnical indexes than to high expenses.

Experimental investigation of the behaviour of a steel sub-frame under a natural fire

Aldina Santiago,Luís Simões da Silva,Gilberto Vaz,Paulo Vila Real,António Gameiro Lopes 국제구조공학회 2008 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.8 No.3

This paper details a testing facility (“NATURAL FIRE FACILITY”) that allows closelycontrolled experimental testing on full-scale sub-frames while reproducing the spatially transient temperature conditions measured in real fires. Using this test facility, an experimental investigation of six steel sub-frames under a natural fire was carried out at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra. The main objective of these tests was to provide insight into the influence of these connection types on the behaviour of steel sub-structures under fire. The experimental layout is defined by two thermally insulated HEA300 columns and an unprotected IPE300 beam with 5.7 m span, supporting a composite concrete slab. Beam-to-column connections are representative of the most common joint type used on buildings: welded joints and extended, flush and partial depth plate. Finally, the available results are presented and discussed: evolution of the steel temperature; development of displacements and local deformations and failure modes on the joints zone.

Transmission Techniques for Downlink Multi-Antenna MC-CDMA Systems in a Beyond-3G Context

Portier Fabrice,Raos Ivana,Silva Adao,Baudais Jean-Yves,Helard Jean-Francois,Gameiro Atilio,Zazo Santiago The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2005 Journal of communications and networks Vol.7 No.2

The combination of multiple antennas and multi-carrier code division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) is a strong candidate for the downlink of the next generation mobile communications. The study of such systems in scenarios that model real-life trans-missions is an additional step towards an optimized achievement. We consider a realistic MIMO channel with two or four transmit antennas and up to two receive antennas, and channel state information (CSI) mismatches. Depending on the mobile terminal (MT) class, its number of antennas or complexity allowed, different data-rates are proposed with turbo-coding and asymptotic spectral efficiencies from 1 to 4.5 bit/s/Hz, using three algorithms developed within the European IST-MATRICE project. These algorithms can be classified according to the degree of CSI at base-station (BS): i) Transmit space-frequency prefiltering based on constrained zero-forcing algorithm with complete CSI at BS; ii) transmit beamforming based on spatial correlation matrix estimation from partial CSI at BS; iii) orthogonal space-time block coding based on Alamouti scheme without CSI at BS. All presented schemes require a reasonable complexity at MT, and are compatible with a single-antenna receiver. A choice between these algorithms is proposed in order to significantly improve the performance of MC-CDMA and to cover the different environments considered for the next generation cellular systems. For beyond-3G, we propose prefiltering for indoor and pedestrian microcell environments, beamforming for suburban macrocells including high-speed train, and space-time coding for urban conditions with moderate to high speeds.

Osteogenic potential of mesenchymal cells derived from canine umbilical cord matrix co-cultured with platelet-rich plasma and demineralized bone matrix

        Talita F.B. Souza,Silmara S. Sakamoto,Gabriel T.N.M. Ferreira,Roberto Gameiro,Marcia Marinho,Alexandre L. de Andrade,Tereza C. Cardoso 대한수의학회 2015 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.16 No.3

Canine mesenchymal cells (MSCs) derived from Wharton’s jelly were co-cultured, then supplemented or not supplemented with platelet richplasma (PRP) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM) to verify osteogenic differentiation. Osteoblastic differentiation followed by mineralizedbone matrix production was found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) when MSCs were associated with PRP/DBM in culture after 14–21-days of induction. Osteopontin and osteocalcin gene expression were significantly superior (p < 0.05) under the same culture conditionsafter 21 days of observation. In conclusion, addition of PRP to DBM co-cultured with MSCs successfully induced osteogenesis in vitro.
