Rice grain quality is usually observed by its chalkiness and is affected by genetic effects of endosperm, cytoplasm and maternal plant. Controlling the chalkiness in rice can be a very challenging task because it is affected by genotype and environmental factors. The present study aimed to introduce 5-methyl tryptophan (5MT) resistance from the 5MT resistant mutants into Samgwang, a high grain and eating quality Korean variety by introgression of, resulting to elevated tryptophan content in grains. The progenies generated from single crosses of two different cross combinations were phenotyped based on agronomic traits and by 5MT growth inhibition test. Through direct PCR sequencing, the inheritance of single base mutation (F124V) in OsASA was selected among the progenies. The latter generations were used to analyze the grain and eating quality of the selected lines. Inbred lines (S4-10, S4-28, and S5-11) carrying the point mutation in OsASA and with reduced chalkiness plus good eating qualities were successfully generated. Tryptophan content in the milled grains of the selected lines showed 2 - 4 times higher (mg/100 mg) than the maternal parent. The three selected lines, S4-10, S4-28, and S5-11, were later renamed as GolSam-1, GolSam-2, and GolSam-3 respectively.
One Europe and Two Wests: The Transformation of Transatlantic Relations since 1991
( Franz Oswald ) 한국EU학회 2007 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.5 No.1
Since 1991 the West has been changing from a unitary, US-led global actor towards two friendly, but competing international actors. The roles of the transatlantic partners, shaped by the 1940`s balance of power, have been changing since 1991 when the EU began to translate its economic power into a security role. This added a new dimension to the soft balancing of US primacy practiced by the EU. Although the experiences of the 1990`s highlighted deficiencies of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, the EU has escalated its role claims and given some substance to its security role. The security dependency institutionalised in NATO since 1949 can now be replaced by the almost forgotten intention of the Marshall Plan of 1946: a united Europe increasingly able to take responsibility for its own security.

This study evaluates the techno-economic feasibility to produce tert-butyl ethers of glycerol in Colombiausing glycerol obtained from biodiesel production. The major drawback of this process is related to thehigh costs associated to the isobutylene reagent used for this reaction. Three possible scenarios, usingisobutylene: glycerol molar ratios of 2:1 and 4:1, have been evaluated by simulation and technoeconomicalassessment using pure isobutylene, C4 fraction and a mixture of C4 and isobutylene as well asa refining stage for crude glycerol. The desired product, a mixture of di- and tri- ethers of glycerol (h-GTBE) was obtained in high amounts for the three scenarios (92–99 wt.%) and a direct relation betweenproduction cost and raw material cost was established. The prices for h-GTBE were higher than theproposed selling prices; however, the formation of byproduct (C4 fraction) can make the processcompetitive. h-GTBE production did not have a competitive price for any scenario at high isobutylene:glycerol molar ratio. The production price was lowered by around 20% for all scenarios when crudeglycerol was considered. Finally, competitive price of h-GTBE (0.96 $/kg) and NPV positive was obtainedusing a mixture of C4 and isobutylene and crude glycerol.
Plant microRNAs in molecular breeding
Franz Marielle Nogoy,Marjohn C. Niño,송재영,정유진,강권규,노일섭,조용구 한국식물생명공학회 2018 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.12 No.1
MicroRNAs are small, endogenous, non-coding RNAs found in plants, animals, and in some viruses, which negatively regulate the expression of genes by promoting the degradation of target mRNAs or by translation inhibition. Ever since the discovery of miRNAs, its biology, mechanisms, and functions were extensively studied in the past two decades. Plant and animal miRNAs both regulate target mRNAs, but they differ in scope of complementarity to their target mRNA. Plant microRNAs are known to play essential roles in a wide array of plant development. To date, there are many studies giving evidence that the regulation of miRNA levels can reprogram plant responses to abiotic (physical environment) and biotic stresses (pathogen and herbivore). Most of these studies were first carried out in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Recently, the trend of miRNA research is furthering its role in crop breeding and its evolutionary origin. In this review, we presented the dynamic biogenesis of microRNAs, the diverse functions of miRNAs in plants, and experimental designs used in studying microRNAs in plants, and most importantly, we presented the applications of microRNA-based technology to improve the resistance of crops in abiotic and biotic stresses.

Background: Transient bundle branch block has been defi ned as an interventricular conduction defect that subsequently returns, to normal conduction. Of particular concern is the severe coronary artery disease etiology of this particular phenomenon which may have a diagnostic as well as prognostic value in such patients and may modify subsequent management strategies. Case: We present a case of transient left bundle branch block occurring in 60 year old female patient who presented with intermittent chest pain. First ECG on consult revealed sinus rhythm with complete left bundle branch block. A repeat ECG on follow up demonstrated an initial CLBBB pattern at lead 1 then reverting back to Narrow QRS sinus rhythm on the succeeding leads. Resting echocardiogram showed concentric left ventricular remodelling with normal wall motion, contractility and systolic function with grade 1 diastolic dysfunction. Dobutamine stress was performed revealing normal result with 88% MHR with no stress-induced ischemia. Hence, a coronary angiogram was done showing 3 vessel disease with signifi cant left main coronary involvement. She underwent CABG which remarkably improved her angina symptoms. Conclusions: This case report shows an unusual case of severe CAD presenting as transient CLBBB. The clinical presentation may be obvious clinically but certain diagnostic tests, particularly plain and stress echocardiogram, which can aid the physician in the diagnosis, may miss out the exact diagnosis. While a non-invasive echocardiogram is preferred over an invasive coronary angiogram for CAD workup, it is noteworthy to emphasize that a good history and physical examination with aid of conventional 12 lead ECG can guide physicians as to subsequent workup of this particular case.
