Vol.- No.3

Vol.7 No.1

Language has a characteristic to be changed slowly but continuously even though we can not recognize. Especially, sound is inclind to be changed easily compare to other factors in language such as vocaburary, Syntax or Morpheme. But it is necessary to understand that phonetic changes used to occur regurally and systematically under a certain rules. By using the synchronic approach method, I have tried to study how English pronunciation have been formed to ist present state through a long period and what the phonemic characteristic of present English is. In order to find out the process of synchronic sound changes in English, I have investigated as follows: 1) The characteristics of phonetic changes. 2) The types and phenomenons of phonetic changes. (1) Independent or isolative sound changes (2) Dependent or combinative chagnes (3) External changes 3) Historical research in the changes of phonemic system by using the synchronic approach method. (1) Old English(OE) (2) Middle English(ME) (3) Modern English(ModE) (4) Present English(Pres E) As a result, it was proved that vowels were less stable and easily changed than consanant in the phonemic system. OE: The most important sound-changes of the Old English was front mutation or i/jmutation. ME: Old English diphthongs became monophthongs in ME and ME diphthongs were French origin, borrowed from the French-speaking conguerors of England. Mode: Two highest ME front and back vowels(i and u) became diphthongs. These changes in the qualities of the long, or short vowels consist were more notable as a result of the great vowel shift. Compare to the big changes of vowels, changes in the consonantal system were less striking. We may summarize the most improtant characteristics of each period's phonetic changes as follows: OE: Divergent Development period ME: Convergent Development period Mod E: Rephonologization period.

Vol.8-2 No.-

Vol.8 No.-

This research was performed to investigate and analyse the leisure activities of university's students for the purpose that the analytical results would be contributed to students' life guidances and leisure education within the university and the related institution. In addition, this study will be used as the necessary basic material to establish and improve student policy, program planning and managements in their leisure education and student's life guidance. Students were asked to respond to the questionnaire that consisted of 5 categories concerning general information of the responding students, how much leisure time, what type and item of the leisure activity and the students' consciousness of their leisure life. The sample for the study were collected from 311 students at Soonchunhyang University and each 100 students of R and H University. The responses for this sample were statistically analysed by using of SPSS/PC+. The results of the research were as follows: It was found that the university students spent 10.42 hours(43%) on biologically necessary activities, 8.37 hours on studying activities and 5.22 hours for the leisure activities in a day from monday to friday and each 10.58(44%), 3.65(15%) and 9.77(41%) hours respectively in a day of weekend. It was also revealed that the students participated in the field of the "social intercourse activity" most frequently and "viewing and appreciation activity" was the next one among 6 activities. "Watching T.V. and listening to the radio" was selected as the most enjoyable leisure items and the items of "conversation with family members or friends", "computer game and internet chatting", "reading books" and "art and literary activity", "walking" and "playing in the PC room or electronic game room" were the next places in order. It seemed to be the remarkable that relatively fewer students(69%) participated in the leisure types of sports compared to the other types. But much of the students expressed that they wanted to participate in the field of sports in the future, in which male students wanted to engage in one sports everyday continuously, but female students preferred to participate in various items extensively. As to the conditions of students' leisure activities, it was showed that university campus was the best place to enjoy the leisure activity during the weekdays and the location area of students' dwelling house during weekend. The outcomes showed that the students seemed to spend their leisure time with their college friends during weekdays, while middle or high school friends did during weekend. The most important factor affecting to the leisure activities was founded to be the students' willingness to do them and it appeared that the other conditions such as the money, places, facilities or time couldn't do anything with the leisure activities. Concerned about the students' consciousness of the leisure activities in their social lives, most of the students valued both the economic activities and the leisure ones as the one of the more valuable things in human life, rather than the religious or social service activities. And it concluded that students considered leisure activities in their university campus a preparatory process for the future's healthy leisure activities.

Vol.15 No.1

In the historical study of English vowels, we can find out easily that long vowels have passed through a drastic change in the course of the history in the English language, as compared with the comparatively stable history of short vowels. In the period of Old English, there were six vowels of i, e, o, u, æ, a with a comparatively tense quality. O E i, e, o, u were lowered to [??] and the front vowel [æ] and εback [a] merged into one central [a] by the early Middle English period and ME a in turn became front [æ] in early Modern English period. ME [u] has been unrounded and centralized to [Λ]. Rounding quality of English has also been becoming weaker and weaker. It is proved that unrounding tendency in English was exceptionally strong in the sixteenth and seventeenth centries, with its prime in the seventeenth century. In fact, all these changes found in the history of the English short vowels are largely concerned with the general unrounding tendency and Ⅰ tried to explain the history of English short vowels from a functional point of view in this paper.

Vol.9 No.1

A language has its characteristic vocal system which the air is articulated differently according to how it modulate the vocal organs during the air flows through several vocal organs from the lung. Because the characteristic vocal systems between two languages are guite different from each other, it is very difficult for Korean students to follow to the native speaker´s voice exactly especially in the listening and in the speaking. I supposed that the investigation and analysis of the problem factors in the vocal systems can suggest right teaching method for the effective education of the foreign language and so, in this report, I have tried to check and find out what kinds of the phonetic expressions can be made error by most of Korean students. For this investigation, 140 university students who are practising English in the language laboratory room have been checked out. The contents of this study have been limited only in the fields of phonemic and in the phonetic in which much errors have been observed obviously in the course of English transfer to Korean. In the field of phonemic side, I have handled only the phoneme classification. For the phonetic field, the problems of the phonetic variations complied with the phonetic environments and the phonological rules were concerned with. In order to confirm of this investigation, the perception test and the production test have been fulfilled repeatedly. From the analysis of the phonetic errors which most of the students have made in this experimental investigation, following theoretical points can be suggested in this report. 1) In the case that one English phoneme which has distinctive feature does not exist in the same type of the Korean Phoneme, but exist only in the form of the allophones, the students have made errors easily to substitute an English sound to an inexact but the similar Korean sound. 2) The students have had a tendency to substitute an English sounds to the similar Korean ones unconscisouly when the English phonemes do not exist in the Korean phonemes or in the Korean allophones. 3) Most of the students have substituted the English allophones to the similar Korean phonemic systems according to the phonetic environment´s variation. 4) Because Koreans are accustomed to the nasalization phenomena in their babits students made lots errors in speaking English with their nasalization habit. 5) Many cases have been observed that unnecessary Korean vowels have inserted between the English consonant culsters or on final consonants of the English syllables, because Korean syllables do not have consonant culsters. 6) A lots of errors have been investigated that students have a tendency to emit English with their own wrong habits by disregarding the English phonetic symbols, because they have learned English by the means of reading and translation of the written spellings in the book for a long time. As I had expected, these errors of the students were supposed to come from their own’s individnal customs in the course of English transfer to Korean and most of these errors have a regular and systematical ones.
