Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Increased Autonomic Activation and Improved Symptoms of Depression and Insomnia among Patients with Major Depression Disorder

        I-Mei Lin,Sheng-Yu Fan,Cheng-Fang Yen,Yi-Chun Yeh,Tze‐Chun Tang,Mei-Feng Huang,Tai-Ling Liu,Peng-Wei Wang,Huang-Chi Lin,Hsin-Yi Tsai,Yu-Che Tsai 대한정신약물학회 2019 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.17 No.2

Objective: Autonomic imbalance is considered a psychopathological mechanism underlying major depressive disorder (MDD). Heart rate variability (HRV) is an index for autonomic activation. Poor sleep quality is common among patients with MDD. HRV biofeedback (BF) has been used for regulating autonomic balance among patients with physical illness and mental disorders. The purpose of present study was to examine the effects of HRV-BF on depressive symptoms, sleep quality, pre-sleep arousal, and HRV indices, in patients with MDD and insomnia. Methods: In this case-controlled study, patients with MDD and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score higher than 6 were recruited. The HRV-BF group received weekly 60-minute protocol for 6 weeks, and the control group who have matched the age and sex received medical care only. All participants were assessed on Beck Depression Inventory-II, Back Anxiety Inventory, PSQI, and Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale. Breathing rates and electrocardiography were also performed under resting state at pre-testing, and post-testing conditions and for the HRV-BF group, also at 1-month follow-up. Results: In the HRV-BF group, symptoms of depression and anxiety, sleep quality, and pre-sleep arousal were significantly improved, and increased HRV indices, compared with the control group. Moreover, in the HRV-BF group, significantly improved symptoms of depression and anxiety, decreased breathing rates, and increased HRV indices were detected at post-testing and at 1-month follow-up, compared with pre-testing values. Conclusion: This study confirmed that HRV-BF is a useful psychosocial intervention for improving autonomic balance, baroreflex, and symptoms of depression and insomnia in MDD patients.

Ecological No-tillage Technology of Sloping Tea Garden in China

        Dong-Mei Fan,Kai Fan,Peng Lu,Xiao-Chang Wang 한국차학회 2015 한국차학회지 Vol.- No.S

The majority of sloping tea gardens in China are now short of effective management because of the limitation of labor force, therefore tea quality is hard to guarantee and the tea industry might be frustrated. Thus a new ecological no-tillage technique (abbreviation for ENT) was put forward, the application of this technique was developed on the basis of some reconstructions in current sloping tea gardens including two key steps: 1) remolding present sloping tea gardens into semi-trapezoidal one by a special ditch; 2) preserving pruning brunches and organic fertilizers into those ditches to form an organic cover layer on soil. This no-tillage technique could significantly reduce soil erosion as well as promote the formation of organic matters on soil surface in 3-5 years. Comparing with the conventional tillage measures, ENT could save about 40% fertilization and 50% labor-cost. Combine with assistant managements, the ecological no-tillage technology could not only effectively recover ecosystem, but also depress plant diseases and insect pests. Improvement on tea production and tea quality especially tea aroma are also observed. It is convincible that ENT has considerable advantages in cost-savings and production efficiency improvement in sloping tea gardens, which makes it one of the reference management choices for future sustainable development.

Molecular cloning and characterization of two alanine aminotransferase genes in the white-backed planthopper Sogatella furcifera

        Jin-Mei Fan,Pin-JunWan,Qiang Fu,Na Li,Li-Li Mu,Guo-Qing Li 한국응용곤충학회 2014 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.17 No.3

Sogatella furcifera is a serious phloem-feeding pest of rice. Rice phloem sap cannot meet its nutrition requirementfor some essential amino acids. The yeast-like symbionts (YLSs) have been hypothesized to aid S. furcifera inamino acid metabolism to compensate for the unbalanced amino acid composition in the rice phloem. In thepresent paper, two full-length cDNAs of putative alanine aminotransferases (ALTs) were obtained fromS. furcifera. Sequence similarity and phylogenetic analysis suggested that one ALT came from the YLSs (SfylsALT)whereas the other ALT originated from S. furcifera (SfALT1). Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chainreaction revealed that SfylsALT clearly had a high transcript level in the abdomen. In contrast, SfALT1 was broadlyexpressed in the head, wings, legs, thorax and abdomen. Since YLSs were distributed in the abdominal fat body, ovary and eggs, and were not located in the head, leg, thorax and wing, the tissue expression patterns alsosuggested that SfylsALT came fromthe YLSs' genome and SfALT1 was from the host. Moreover, the enzyme activitiesof Sf9 cell-expressed SfALT1 and SfylsALT proteins were tested in vitro. The isolated suspensions containingeither of the two proteins showed higher ALT activities than that fromblank cells or egfp-expressed cells. It seemsthat SfALT1 and SfylsALT encode functional alanine aminotransferases.

Clinical and Pathologic Features of Multifocal and Multicentric Breast Cancer in Chinese Women: A Retrospective Cohort Study

        Mei-rong Zhou,Zhong-hua Tang,Jing Li,Jin-Hu Fan,Yi Pang,Hong-jian Yang,Shan Zheng,Jing-qiao Bai,Ning Lv,You-Lin Qiao,Feng Xu,Hai-zhi Qi 한국유방암학회 2013 Journal of breast cancer Vol.16 No.1

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the clinical-pathological characteristics of multifocal and multicentric breast cancer (MMBC) in Chinese women. Methods: Sixty-seven cases with MMBC were randomly collected and reviewed at seven hospitals in representative districts of China during 1999 to 2008. Results: The incidence of MMBC in breast cancer in China was 1.75%. Compared to those with unifocal breast cancer, women with MMBC were more likely to have larger tumor size, lymph node metastasis (59.70% vs. 45.62%) and stage III to IV (46.26% vs. 21.10%). The peak age at onset of MMBC was 40 to 49 years old and has been gradually increasing during 1999 to 2008. Most of the MMBC women were treated with surgery and adjuvant therapy. Conclusion: In China, the incidence of MMBC in breast cancer is significantly lower than that in Western countries. Compared to unifocal breast cancer, MMBC is biologically more aggressive. Most MMBC women underwent mastectomy, instead of breast conservation surgery.

      • Fire performance of edge and interior circular steel-reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns

        Fan-Qin Meng,Mei-Chun Zhu,G. Charles Clifton,Kingsley U. Ukanwa,James B.P. Lim 국제구조공학회 2021 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.41 No.1

The steel-reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular column (SRCFT) is a new form of composite columns. Before widely accepted in engineering practice, its fire behaviour shall be fully understood. Four representative circular SRCFT stub columns were built and tested to failure under ISO fire herein. The tests explored the effect of reinforced steel, the internal or external heating condition and load ratios. The experimental results indicated that the inserted section steel significantly improved the fire resistance of circular SRCFT columns. The non-uniform fire condition did not produce a detrimental effect on the fire response of the specimen. The numerical model was developed and validated against the experimental results. Then a parametric study was present to evaluate the effect of load level, eccentricity and heating conditions. A comparison was made to check the accuracy of a widely accepted design method. The comparison indicated the design method was generally 36% conservative for axially loaded condition and 25% un-conservative for eccentrically loaded condition.

Dimensional synthesis of six-degrees-offreedom high-speed parallel robot using comprehensive evaluation index

Fan Zhang,Jiangping Mei,Yanqin Zhao 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.3

Existing high-speed parallel robots cannot satisfy the operating requirements of non-planar industrial generating line. Considering this problem, this study proposes a comprehensive index that can be used for the dimensional synthesis design of a six-degrees-offreedom (6-DOF) (three translations and three rotations) parallel robot. The index is based on kinematic, coupling characteristic, and dynamic analyses. A comparison with the dimensional parameters of a previously designed robot shows that the proposed design method can effectively decrease the indexes in various aspects and improve the motion performance of the robot. In addition, the servo motor specifications are estimated using the common trajectory and seven-time B-spline curve motion law to meet the robot motion requirements. Therefore, the proposed design approach has successfully been used to guide and develop the design process of the 6-DOF high-speed parallel robot.

Effects of rice straw fermented with spent Pleurotus sajor-caju mushroom substrates on milking performance in Alpine dairy goats

        Fan Geng-Jen,Chen Mei-Hsing,Lee Churng-Faung,Yu Bi,Lee Tzu Tai 아세아·태평양축산학회 2022 Animal Bioscience Vol.35 No.7

Objective: To improve the feeding value of rice straw (RS), this study evaluated the potential of rice straw fermented with Pleurotus sajor-caju (FRS) as dairy goat feed. Methods: Spent Pleurotus sajor-caju mushroom substrate was used as fungi inoculum to break the lignocellulose linkage of rice straw, which was solid-fermented at 25°C to 30°C for 8 weeks. The ruminal degradation of pangolagrass hay (PG), FRS, and RS were measured in situ for 96 hours in three dry Holstein cows, respectively. Effect of fungi fermented RS on milking performance was studied in feeding trials. A total of 21 Alpine goats a trial were divided into 3 groups: a control group in which PG accounted for 15% of the diet dry matter, and FRS or RS was used to replace the PG in the control group. Goats were fed twice a day under two 28-day trial in individual pens. Meanwhile, a 3×3 Latin square trial (14 days/period) was conducted to study the rumen digestion of three diets by using three fistulated dry goats. Rumen contents were collected for metabolite analyses every one to three hours on the last two days. Results: In situ study showed that fermentation could elevate the rumen degradable fraction and effective degradability of RS (p<0.05). Effective degradability of FRS dry matter was significantly increased from 29.5% of RS to 41.7%. Lactating trial results showed that dry matter intake and milk yield in the PG group and FRS group were similar and higher than those in RS group (p<0.05). The concentration of propionic acid and total volatile fatty acid in the RS group tended to be lower than those in PG group (p<0.10). There were no differences in rumen pH value and ammonia nitrogen level among the groups tested. Conclusion: Fermentation of rice straw by spent Pleurotus sajor-caju mushroom substrate could substantially enhance its feeding value to be equivalent to PG as an effective fiber source for dairy goat. The fermented rice straw is recommended to account for 15% in diet dry matter. Study on the characteristics of zirconia ceramic in three-dimensional ultrasonic vibration-assisted ELID internal grinding

        Fan Chen,Guojian Mei,Bo Zhao,Wenbo Bie,Guangxi Li 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.1

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonic vibration-assisted ELID grinding, which combines 3D ultrasonic vibration-assistance with electrolytic in-process grinding wheel dressing (ELID), is a compound process that is designed to achieve high-efficiency precision machining. A grinding force model of 3D ultrasonic vibration-assisted ELID grinding was first developed on the basis of the kinematics of a single grit particle and was verified through experimentation. The surface quality then was observed using white light interference profiling. It was demonstrated during the present investigation that the grinding force during 3D ultrasonic vibration-assisted ELID grinding was approximately 20 %~30 % lower than that of twodimensional (2D) ultrasonic vibration-assisted ELID grinding. In addition, the surface roughness (Ra) achieved during 3D ultrasonic vibration-assisted ELID grinding was approximately 40 %~50 % smoother than was achieved under 2D ultrasonic vibration-assisted ELID, and thus 3D ultrasonic vibration-assisted ELID grinding can achieve better surface quality.
