        Effect of Edible Surface Coatings Followed by Dehydration on Some Quality Attributes and Antioxidants Content of Raw and Blanched Tomato Slices

        Changes in quality attributes and antioxidantscontent of tomato slices coated with gum Arabic at differentconcentrations then sun- or air-dried were investigated. Drying increased the dry matter content and the rehydrationratio with increase in gum Arabic concentrations. Thewater activity was fluctuated. Slices coated with 10% gumArabic and air-dried had a maximum dry matter content(84.87%), a minimum water activity value (0.27) and ahigher rehydration ratio (4.69), compared to uncoatedslices. Drying of slices before and after coating had nosignificant (p≤0.05) effect on the pH. Coating of the slicesfollowed by drying had no effect on the total soluble solidscontent. Blanched slices coated with 10% gum Arabic andsun-dried had a lower browning index value (0.029). Drieduncoated slices were darker than coated slices. Surfacecoating alleviates the effect of heat on the ascorbic acid,total phenolics, and flavonoid contents.

        Hedgehog Oral Viral Papilloma

        고슴도치에서 발생한 바이러스성 섬유 유두종의 조직학적 소견과 관련하여 증례보고를 하고자 한다. 상악에서 발생한 단발성의 종대된 종괴는 원형 혹은 타원형의 외양을 보였으며, 표면은 거칠었며, 잇몸과 동일한 색을 나타내었고, 직경은 6×3×2 mm였다. 외과적으로 절제 후, 종괴는 병리조직학적 진단을 위해 경북대학교 수의과대학 병리학교실에 의뢰되었다. 종괴는 처리과정을 거친 후 조직절편 과정 후에 조직병리학적 진단을 위해 염색 과정을 거쳤다. 조직병리학적 진단으로 본 종괴는 Fibro-papilloma로 진단되었다. 조직병리학적으로 종괴는 유두종 바이러스에 의한 사마귀와 비슷한 조직학적 소견을 보였으며, 가시층 및 기저층의 비후, 각질세포에서의 핵내봉입체, 점막하층의 섬유화가 특징적으로 관찰되었다. 또한 Macchiavello염색을 통하여 붉은 색의 핵내봉입체를 동정하였으며, 유두종의 자발적인 퇴축과 관련이 있는 림프구의 침윤은 관찰되지 않아, 본 증례의 종양의 자발적인 퇴축의 가능성이 낮음을 시사하였다. 유두종증은 주로 어린 연령의 동물에서 다발하는 것으로 알려졌으나, 본 증례의 경우 5년령의 고슴도치에서 발생한 경우로, 감소한 면역력과 관련 있는 것으로 사료된다. 본 증례는 고슴도치에서 발생한 유두종 바이러스에 의한 섬유성 유두종 증례로서, 본 저자가 알고 있는 한 최초 보고인 것으로 사료된다. Here we describe the histological lesion of a viral fibro-papilloma in a hedgehog. After surgical removal from maxilla, the solitary swollen mass was round to oval, yellowish with rough surface and measuring 6×3×2mm approximately. The tumor mass was submitted to the laboratory of pathology, college of veterinary medicine, Kyungpook National University for pathological diagnosis. Pathological examination of the tumor was established, the tumor was described grossly and sample was trimmed, sectioned and routinely prepared for histopathological evaluation. The tumor mass was diagnosed as viral fibro-papilloma, as the histological picture showed characteristic features of warts caused by papillomaviruses. The tumor characterized by thickening of the stratum spinosum (acanthosis) and basale, koilocytosis, intra-nuclear inclusion bodies in keratinocytes and fibrosis of submucosa. Further, viral inclusion bodies were demonstrated by Machiavello stain giving red color to the nuclei. No lymphocytes that responsible for regression of the wart could be detected, suggesting the poor possibility of spontaneous regression of the tumor. Papillomatosis is a disease of young animals, but in our case the infected Hedgehog was 5 years old, that maybe due to an impaired immune system, which is also shown by absence of lymphocytes. To the best knowledge of the author, this case presents the first report of viral fibropapillomatosis in Hedgehog.

        <P>The present case report describes a case of chronic renal failure characterised by renal medullary fibrosis and renal papillary necrosis in a male Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica). A 12-year-old male Siberian tiger presented with depression, anorexia and weight loss. Blood urea nitrogen (&gt; 50.4 mmol/l) and ammonia (71.7 µmol/l) were increased, suggesting chronic renal failure and uraemia. The tiger died secondary to gastric haemorrhage. At necropsy, the kidneys had yellow lesions in the medulla and renal papillae and petechiae in the cortex. The stomach had multiple mucosal ulcers and haemorrhage. Microscopically, marked renal medullary fibrosis and renal papillary necrosis were observed with tubular atrophy, degeneration, coagulative necrosis, calcification and chronic inflammatory cell infiltration. The renal cortex showed moderate interstitial inflammation. The urinary bladder exhibited epithelial desquamation and submucosal fibrosis. The tiger was diagnosed with chronic renal failure secondary to renal papillary necrosis and medullary fibrosis.</P>

        Comparison of intraperitoneal versus intravenous dexamethasone on postoperative nausea and vomiting after gynecological laparoscopy: a randomized clinical trial

        Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complication following laparascopic surgery. This study compared the effect of intraperitoneal versus intravenous dexamethasone for reducing PONV after gynecological laparoscopic surgeries. Methods: Eighty adult female patients, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I–II, scheduled for gynecological laparoscopic surgery were randomized to receive 8 mg dexamethasone intravenously (IV) (n = 40) or intraperitoneally (IP) (n = 40). The primary outcome was the PONV incidence during the first 24 h after laparoscopy. Secondary outcomes included visual analogue scale (VAS) pain scores, total rescue analgesic consumption during the first 24 h postoperatively, the need for rescue antiemetic drugs, and the incidence of complications that may accompany these medications. Results: Eleven women (27.5%) in the IV group, versus only 3 (7.5%) women in the IP group, experienced nausea during the first 24 h postlaparoscopy (P = 0.037). However, 5 patients (12.5%) in the IV group, versus only 2 patients (5.0%) in the IP group, experienced vomiting (P = 0.424). No statistically significant differences were seen in the severity of nausea or the need for rescue antiemetics. The IV group had a higher rate of side-effects than the IP group (27.5% vs. 7.5%, P = 0.037). Headache and dizziness were common side effects in the IV dexamethasone group. The groups did not differ significantly in terms of mean VAS score for pain and total meperidine consumption during the first 24 h postoperatively. Conclusions: Intraperitoneal dexamethasone at a dose of 8 mg at the end of gynecological laparoscopy reduces the incidence of postoperative nausea.

        Renal Failure in a Female Muskrat

        야생 포유류의 신부전 증후군은 거의 보고가 없다. Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus)는 중간 크기의 설치류이며 많은 질병을 가지고 있으나, 신부전 증후군은 보고된 바가 없으며, 본 케이스는 병리학적 진단을 위해 6개월령 암컷사향쥐의 다른 임상증후군 없는 상태로 부검을 실시하였다. 요관, 신장결석과 수진증을 관찰하였고, 결석에 의한 심각한 신장 손상과, 뇌 손상을 포함한 전신 출혈과 석회화가 관찰되었고, 이는 신장 손상으로 인한 요로결석과 장기 손상에 기인한 것이다. 괴사 및 미세석회화는 신장 피질 및 수질에서, 특히 근위 곡 세뇨관 및 신장의 수집관에서 검출되었다. 사구체의 초자양변성이 크게 관찰되었으며 이는 만성 신염을 나타내며. 이러한 소견은 특히 신장에 대한 진균성 독성 효과를 나타내는 것으로 사료된다. 또한, 폐에서 호중구 및 단핵 세포의 침윤이 관찰되었고, 비장에서도 만성 염증세포인 형질세포의 침윤이 관찰되었다. 본 소견에서는 사향쥐 신부전에 따른 사인은 오염된 사료섭취로 의심되는 것으로 판단된다. Renal failure syndrome in wild mammals is infrequently reported. Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a medium-sized rodent known to carry many diseases but rarely exhibiting renal failure. A six-month old female muskrat was submitted to our laboratory for pathological diagnosis, and necropsy revealed severe renal damage with sand-like lithiasis in the ureter, renal calculi, and hydronephrosis. All major organs, including the cerebrum, also showed systemic hemorrhage and calcification which may have been due to uremia induced by renal failure. Histopathologically, necrosis and microcalcification were detected in the renal cortex and the medulla, especially in the proximal convoluted tubules and collecting ducts of the kidney. Significant hyalinization of the glomeruli was also observed, and this suggested chronic nephritis. These findings would support mycotoxic effects, particularly on the kidney. Moreover, infiltration of neutrophils and mononuclear cells was observed in the lung and of plasma cells in the spleen. The definitive cause of the toxic effects in this case of muskrat renal failure could be attributed to contaminated food.
