        Camel Milk as an Adjuvant Therapy for the Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes: Verification of a Traditional Ethnomedical Practice

        There is a traditional belief in the Middle East that regular consumption of camel milk may aid in prevention and control of diabetes. The aim of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of camel milk as an adjuvant therapy in young type 1 diabetics. This 16-week randomized study enrolled 54 type 1 diabetic patients (average age 20 years) selected from those attending the outpatient diabetes clinic of the Menofia University Hospital, affiliated with Egypt's National Cancer Institute. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups of 27 patients: one received usual management (diet, exercise, and insulin), whereas the other received 500 mL of camel milk daily in addition to standard management. A control group of 10 healthy subjects was also assessed. The following parameters were evaluated at baseline and at 4 and 16 weeks: hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), human C-peptide, lipid profile, serum insulin, anti-insulin antibodies, creatinine clearance, albumin in 24-hour urine, body mass index, and Diabetes Quality of Life score. The following parameters were significantly different between the usual-management group versus the camel milk group after 16 weeks: fasting blood sugar ($227.2\;{\pm}\;17.7$ vs. $98.9\;{\pm}\;16.2\;mg/dL$), HbA1c ($9.59\;{\pm}\;2.05$[%] vs. $7.16\;{\pm}\;1.84$[%]), serum anti-insulin antibodies ($26.20\;{\pm}\;7.69$ vs. $20.92\;{\pm}\;5.45\;{\mu}U/mL$), urinary albumin excretion ($25.17\;{\pm}\;5.43$ vs. $14.54\;{\pm}\;5.62\;mg/dL$/24 hours), daily insulin dose ($48.1\;{\pm}\;6.95$ vs. $23\;{\pm}\;4.05$ units), and body mass index ($18.43\;{\pm}\;3.59$ vs. $24.3\;{\pm}\;2.95\;kg/m^2$). Most notably, C-peptide levels were markedly higher in the camel milk group ($0.28\;{\pm}\;0.6$ vs. $2.30\;{\pm}\;0.51\;pmol/mL$). These results suggest that, as an adjunct to standard management, daily ingestion of camel milk can aid metabolic control in young type 1 diabetics, at least in part by boosting endogenous insulin secretion.

These results suggest that, as an adjunct to standard management, daily ingestion of camel milk can aid metabolic control in young type 1 diabetics, at least in part by boosting endogenous insulin secretion.

        Electrochemical Microbiosensor for Detecting COVID-19 in a Patient Sample Based on Gold Microcuboids Pattern

        As continues increasing the COVID-19 infections, there is an urgent need for developing fast, simple, selective, and accurate COVID-19 biosensors. A highly uniform gold (Au) microcuboid pattern was used as a microelectrode that allowed monitoring a small analyte. The electrochemical biosensor was used to monitor the COVID-19 S protein within a concentration range from 100 to 5 pmol L −1 ; it showed a lower detection limit of 276 fmol L −1 . Finally, the developed COVID-19 sensor was used to detect a positive sample from a human patient obtained through a nasal swab; the results were confirmed using the PCR technique. The results showed that the SWV technique showed high sensitivity towards detecting COVID-19 and good efficiency for detecting COVID-19 in a positive human sample.

        Synthesis of Certain 6-(Arylthio)uracils and Related Derivatives as Potential Antiviral Agents

        New series of 6-(arylthio)uracils, 6-(4-substituted-1-piperazinyl)uracils, 2,4,5-trioxo-1H,3H-benzothiopyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidine and 5-aryl-2,4-dioxo-1H,3H-pyrimido[5,4-f]benzo[1,4]thiazepines have been prepared and screened for their in vitro activity against herpes simplex-1 virus (HSV-1) and human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1). The in vitro cytotoxic activity was also evaluated. The results of biological testing revealed that compound 5b showed marginal activity against HSV-1, while compounds 5b and 5f exhibited marginal activity against HIV-1. The rest of the tested compounds were found devoid of antiviral activity against both HSV-1 and HIV-1.

        In the last few decades with the industrial revolution many environmental contaminants have estrogenic activity (endocrine disruptors, EDs) are released into the environment affecting the male reproductive system and male fertility. Sperm motility is one of the initial tests performed to assess sperm function; only motile sperm can achieve fertilization in vivo. The present study aimed to investigate the possible effects of a group of EDs that represent a widespread chemicals in the environment genistein (Gen), is a naturally occurring isoflavone (100 μM), bisphenol A (BPA), that is used in the manufacture of plastics and other products and released largely into the environment (100 μM), nonylphenol (NP) is an important environmental toxicant and potential endocrine disrupting chemical (10 μg/ml), TCDD, that is formed as an unwanted by-product in the manufacture of chlorinated hydrocarbons (2.5 μg/ml), atrazine (Atraz) is a herbicides (500 μM), dibromochloropropane (DBCP) is a pesticide (10 μg/ml), and diazinone (Diaz) is a insecticide (500 μM) on human sperm motility and kinematic characteristics. Human spermatozoa were incubated in Ham's F10 media with/without the tested chemicals or DMSO as positive control for 6 hr at 37℃ in 5% CO2. Then, sperm motility was assessed using computer assisted semen analyzer. Interestingly, all the chemicals tested significantly decreased sperm motility as compared to the control groups. However, only Diaz significantly decreased sperm kinematic characteristics namely, VCL, VSL, STR, VAP, and ALH. We suggest that the environmental chemicals may have an effect on male fertility via decreasing sperm motility.

        Analysis of radioactivity levels and hazard assessment of black sand samples from Rashid area, Egypt

        The aim of this study is to evaluate the radioactivity levels and radiological impacts of representative black sand samples collected from different locations in the Rashid area, Egypt. These samples were prepared and then analyzed using the high-resolution gamma ray spectroscopy technique with a highpurity germanium detector. The activity concentration (Ac), minimum detectable activity, absorbed gamma dose rate, external hazard index (Hex), annual effective dose rate equivalent, radium equivalent, as well as external and internal hazard index (Hex and Hin, respectively) were estimated based on the measured radionuclide concentration of the 238U(226Ra) and 232Th decay chains and 40K. The activity concentrations of the 238U, 232Th decay series and 40K of these samples varied from 45.11 ± 3.1 Bq/kg to 252.38 ± 34.3 Bq/kg, from 64.65 ± 6.1 Bq/kg to 579.84 ± 53.1 Bq/kg, and from 403.36 ± 20.8 Bq/kg to 527.47 ± 23.1 Bq/kg, respectively. The activity concentration of 232Th in Sample 1 has the highest value compared to the other samples; this value is also higher than the worldwide mean range as reported by UNSCEAR 2000. The total absorbed gamma dose rate and the annual effective dose for these samples were found to vary from 81.19 nGy/h to 497.81 nGy/h and from 99.86 μSv/y to 612.31 μSv/y, which are higher than the world average values of 59 nGy/h and 70 μSv/y, respectively. The Hex values were also calculated to be 3.02, 0.47, 0.63, 0.87, 0.87, 0.51 and 0.91. It was found that the calculated value of Hex for Sample 1 is significantly higher than the international acceptable limit of <1. The results are tabulated, depicted, and discussed within national and international frameworks, levels, and approaches.

      • Endocrine Disruptors Alter Sex Ratio Via Decreasing Y Chromosome-Bearing Spermatozoa Viability

        In mammals, the meiosis division in testes produces equal numbers of two different types of gametes: X chromosome-bearing sperm (X-spermatozoa) and Y chromosomebearing sperm (Y-spermatozoa), which have equal potential to fertilize the oocytes. Therefore, the expected 1: 1 sex ratio is observed. However, under some conditions like endocrine disruptors (EDs) exposure the sex ratio is deviated than the expected with more males or more females. And recently many hypotheses have been postulated to explain the mechanism of sex ratio deviation; however none of them introduced a proven experimental explanation. To solve this enigma, we hypothesized that the differences between X- and Y-spermatozoa survivability under specific conditions due to differences in their chromosome contents are the key leading to the sex ratio alteration. To examine our hypothesis, we combined two techniques; first, hypo-osmotic swelling (HOS) test that was applied to test viability of spermatozoa and second, fluorescence in situ hybridization that was applied on HOS-treated spermatozoa to define sex chromosome composition. In the present study, human spermatozoa were incubated with a group of EDs represent a widespread chemicals in the environment bisphenol A (BPA, 100 μM), nonylphenol (NP, 10 μg/ml), 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD, 2.5 μg/ml), genistein (Gen, 100 μM), and the following pesticides, dibromochloropropane (DBCP, 10 μg/ml), atrazine (Atraz, 500 μM), and diazinone (Diaz, 500 μM) for 6 hr at 37℃ in 5% CO2. Then, the viability of spermatozoa and their sex chromosome contents were evaluated simultaneously. Among seven chemicals studied only four chemicals (Atraz, DBCP, TCDD, and Diaz) significantly decreased Y-sperm viability when compared to those of X-spermatozoa in the same treatment group and viability of Y-spermatozoa when compared to those in the negative and positive (DMSO) control groups (p<0.05). Also, in these four treatment groups the sex ratio of live sperm population was significantly lowered compared to the control groups (p<0.05). Otherwise, Gen, BPA, and NP did not show any significant effect on viability of Yspermatozoa or decreasing sex ratio in live sperm population as compared to the control groups. It has been proven that TCDD, DBCP, and the pesticides decrease the sex ratio, but the same effect was not observed in case of Gen, BPA, and NP. From the present findings, there is no doubt that the EDs may alter sex ratio via decreasing Y-spermatozoa viability.

        A mathematical model of electro-thermoelasticity subjected to memory-dependent derivative (MDD) heat conduction law is applied to a one-dimensional problem of a thermoelectric spherical cavity exposed to a warm stun that is an element of time in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Utilizing Laplace transform as an instrument, the issue has been fathomed logically within the changed space. Numerical inversion of the Laplace transform is carried for the considered distributions and represented graphically. Some comparisons are shown in the figures to estimate the effects of MDD parameters and thermoelectric properties on the behavior of all considered fields.

        Identification of Green Alga Chlorella vulgaris Isolated from Freshwater and Improvement Biodiesel Productivity via UV Irradiation

        Chlorella vulgaris was isolated from the Nile River, Qalubia Governorate, Egypt, for possible use in biodiesel production. BG-II nutrient growth media was used for isolation and laboratory growth. Identification was performed via 18S rRNA gene amplification, followed by sequencing. The alga was exposed to UVC (254 nm) for 15, 30, and 45 s to improve dry weight accumulation and to increase the oil production. Daily measurements of dry weight (g·l<sup>-1</sup>) were performed; oil content and volumetric lipid productivity were also determined. UV-C exposure led to an increase in the volumetric lipid productivity by 27, 27.3, and 32.4 mg·l<sup>-1</sup>·d<sup>-1</sup> with 15, 30, and 45 s, respectively, as compared with the control, which resulted in 18 mg·l<sup>-1</sup>·d<sup>-1</sup>. Of the examined mutants, the one with the highest productivity was re-irradiated by UV-C (254 nm) for 15, 30, 45, and 60 s. For 15 s of exposure time, the oil content increased to 34%, while it was 31% at 30 s; further, it decreased to 22% at 45 and 60 s exposures. The fatty acid methyl ester profile was 82.22% in the first mutant at 45 s, compared with the wild strain that contained a total of 66.01% of FAs. Furthermore, the highest levels of polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl ester were observed in the mutant exposed for 45 s, and it reached 11.41%, which reduced the cetane number to 71.3.

        Anticancer activities of some newly synthesized pyrazole and pyrimidine derivatives

        A series of pyrazolopyridine and pyridopyrimidinederivatives 2–6 were newly synthesized using3,5-bisarylmethylene-1-methylpiperidone as the startingmaterial. The anticancer activities of the synthesizedcompounds were evaluated using 59 different human tumorcell lines, representing cancers of CNS, ovary, renal,breast, colon, lung, leukemia, and melanoma, prostate aswell as kidney. Some of the tested compounds, especiallythose with a fluorine substituent at the para-position in thephenyl ring and those with a pyridopyrimidine-2-thionewith a free –NH or –SH, exhibited greater in vitro antitumoractivities at low concentrations (log 10 [GI50] =-4.6) against the human tumor cell lines. Additionally,some of the compounds had moderate inhibitory effects onthe growth of the cancer cell lines. The detailed synthesis,spectroscopic data and antitumor properties of the synthesizedcompounds are reported.
