        Effects of Propranolol on the Left Ventricular Volume of Normal Subjects During CT Coronary Angiography

        Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of propranolol on the left ventricular (LV) volume during CT coronary angiography. Materials and Methods: The LV volume of 252 normal Chinese subjects (126 subjects with propranolol medication and 126 age- and gender-matched Chinese subjects without medication) was estimated using 64 slices multi-detector CT (MDCT). The heart rate difference was analyzed by the logistic linear regression model with variables that included gender, age, body height, body weight, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and the dosage of propranolol. The following global LV functional parameters were calculated: the real-end diastolic volume (EDV), the real-end systolic volume (ESV) and the real-ejection fraction (EF). Results: The female subjects had a greater decrease of heart rate after taking propranolol. The difference of heart rate was negatively correlated with the dosage of propranolol. The real-EDV, the real-ESV and the real-EF ranged from 48.1 to 109 mL/m2, 6.1 to 57.1 mL/m2 and 41% to 88%, respectively. There was no significant difference in the SBP and DBP between the groups without and with propranolol medication (123 ± 17 and 80 ± 10 mmHg; 120 ± 14 and 80 ± 11 mmHg, respectively). The real-EDV showed no significant difference between these two groups, but the real-ESV and real-EF showed significant differences between these two groups (69.4 ± 9.3 and 70.6 ± 8.9 mL/m2; 23.5 ± 5.7 and 25.6 ± 3.7 mL/m2, 66.5 ± 5.1% and 63.5 ± 4.6%, respectively). Conclusion: The difference of heart rate is significantly influenced by gender and the dosage of propranolol. Propranolol will also increase the ESV, which contributes to a decreased EF, while the SBP, DBP and EDV are not statistically changed.         Adaptive ILC Design for Nonlinear Discrete-time Systems With Randomly Varying Trail Lengths and Uncertain Control Directions

        In this paper, an adaptive iterative learning control (ILC) design method is proposed for a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems with nonaffine structure, randomly varying trail length, and uncertain control direction. In order to achieve repetitive tracking control of the nonaffine structure systems with uncertain control direction, randomly varying trail length, and other uncertainties, we apply a high-order neural network to approximate the expected system input. Then, a novel adaptation law is designed for the neural network weight vector. The main feature of the method proposed in this paper is that the weight vector norm instead of the weight vector itself is updated iteratively to realize the successive approximation of the expected system input, the custom-designed identification mechanism is not necessary to deal with the uncertain control direction, and the analysis of randomly varying trail lengths problem is strictly established. The convergence of the proposed adaptive ILC is set up by a composite energy function. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive ILC design is validated by two simulation examples.

        Stability investigation of phase disturbances in doubly‑fed wind power systems using phase‑locked synchronization

        Under weak grid conditions, there is a strong nonlinear coupling between phase-locked loops (PLLs) and the doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs), and the influence of its dynamic characteristics on system stability cannot be ignored. For a system to be stable, the dynamic properties must be considered. First, based on instantaneous power theory, the subsynchronous frequency component of power oscillation in a three-phase symmetrical system with the participation of a PLL is deduced. Second, the PLL transient stability is studied under two power grid structures. Third, to connect with the power grid model, a DFIG with a PLL structure is established, and the phase disturbance of the PLL is used as the excitation signal. In the rotor current inner loop and the voltage outer loop transfer processes, the PLL phase disturbance component plays a role. A d-axis structure block diagram of the current loop with the PLL phase disturbance component is constructed, and the disturbance transfer function is deduced. The influence mechanism of the PLL control parameters on system power oscillation is investigated. Finally, the modeling simulation verifies the validity of the theoretical analysis

        Buckling Analysis of Steel H Column with Thermal Gradient Along the Flanges

        This paper presents an analytical study about the axial compression buckling of H-section columns with one side of the flanges exposed to fire. The fire-induced thermal gradient along the flanges is obtained by using simplified Fourier heat conduction equation. The pre-buckling stress and bowing effect due to the non-uniform temperature distribution through the cross-section is considered. The analysis is accomplished by using the Rayleigh–Ritz method. The analytical solution is validated by finite element analysis using ANSYS. Finally, the parametric study is performed for different sections including different values of length, thickness ratio and width-to-height ratio.

      • Overexpression of Tbx3 Predicts Poor Prognosis of Patients with Resectable Pancreatic Carcinoma

        Background: To determine the expressions of Tbx3, a member of subgroup belonging to T-box family, and its prognostic value in pancreatic carcinoma. Materials and Methods: We determined the expression levels of Tbx3 on both mRNA and protein levels in 30 pairs of fresh tumor tissues and paratumor tissues by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting, respectively. In addition, protein level of Tbx3 were identified using immunochemistry in 80 pairs of paraffin-embedded specimen. The correlations between Tbx3 expression and various clinicopathological parameters as well as overall survival were evaluated. Results: Tbx3 mRNA and protein levels in tumor tissues were significantly higher than in the paratumor tissues by qRT-PCR ($0.05{\pm}0.007$ vs. $0.087{\pm}0.001$, p<0.001) and western blotting ($1.134{\pm}0.043$ vs. $0.287{\pm}0.017$, p<0.001). The statistical analysis based on immunohistochemical evaluation suggested that Tbx3 aberrant expression was significantly associated with several conventional clinicopathological variables, such as gender, age, tumor position, preoperative CA19-9 level, pathological T staging and N staging. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that Tbx3 expression was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (<0.001). Conclusions: Our results suggest that overexpression of Tbx3 is associated with poor prognosis of pancreatic cancer patients. However, additional clinical trials are needed to accurately validate this observation.

        Antioxidative Activities of Hydrolysates from Duck Egg White Using Enzymatic Hydrolysis

        Duck egg white (DEW) hydrolysates were prepared by five enzymes (papain, trypsin, chymotrypsin, alcalase, and flavourzyme) and their antioxidant activities investigated in this study. DEW hydrolyzed with papain (DEWHP) had the highest peptide content among the five enzymatic treatments. Besides, the peptide content of DEWHP increased when the enzyme to substrate ratio (E/S ratio) increased. It was suggested that higher E/S ratio contributed to elevate the degree of hydrolysis of DEW effectively. Similar results were also obtained by Tricine-SDS-PAGE. In addition, SDS-PAGE patterns indicated papain was the only one amongst all enzymes with the ability to hydrolyze DEW. In antioxidant properties, DEWHP showed more than 70% of inhibitory activity on linoleic acid peroxidation and superoxide anion scavenging. Moreover, the $Fe^{2+}$ chelating effect of DEWHP was greater than 90%, while no significant difference was observed in DPPH radical scavenging and reducing ability. The results of peptide contents, antioxidant activities and electrophoresis suggested that the higher the peptide content, the stronger the antioxidant activities in DEWHP.

        Doxorubicin Promotes Migration and Invasion of Breast Cancer Cells through the Upregulation of the RhoA/MLC Pathway

        Purpose: Cancer cells develop acquired resistance induced by chemotherapeutic drugs. In this study, we investigated the effects of brief treatment with cytotoxic drugs on the phenotype of breast cancer cells. Methods: Breast cancer cells MCF7 and BT-474 were briefly treated with paclitaxel or doxorubicin. Clonogenic, migration, and invasion assays were performed on the treated cells. Western blot analysis and RhoA activity assay were also performed. Results: Breast cancer cells when briefly treated with paclitaxel or doxorubicin showed reduced clonogenic ability. Doxorubicin, but not paclitaxel, augmented cell migration and invasion. The invasion-promoting effects of doxorubicin were lost when the two drugs were sequentially used in combination. Myosin light chain (MLC) 2 phosphorylation and RhoA activity were upregulated by doxorubicin and downregulated by paclitaxel. Pretreatment with RhoA inhibitors abolished the migration- and invasion-promoting effects of doxorubicin. Conclusion: Doxorubicin activates the RhoA/MLC pathway and enhances breast cancer cell migration and invasion. Therefore, this pathway might be explored as a therapeutic target to suppress anthracycline-enhanced tumor progression.
