Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive disease often accompanied by skeletal muscle wasting. We aimed to assess whether skeletal muscle mass and muscle attenuation on computed tomography (CT) are predictors of mortality in IPF patients using a nationwide cloud-based database and web-based multidisciplinary discussion (MDD) system. Methods: IPF patients diagnosed using MDD from April 2009 to March 2014 were included. We analyzed the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the erector spinae muscle (ESMCSA) and the pectoralis muscle (PMCSA), muscle attenuation of ESM (ESMMA), and PM (PMMA) on single-slice axial CT. Survival probability was assessed by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared by the log-rank test. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were performed to evaluate the relationship among the ESMCSA, PMCSA, ESMMA, PMMA, clinical parameters, and prognosis. Results: A total of 199 IPF patients were enrolled. Seventy-four patients died during the study period and the most frequent cause was acute exacerbation (13.1%). The group with the lowest quartile of ESMCSA had significantly worse survival than other groups (P = 0.009). Survival rates of the groups with the lowest quartile of PMCSA, lower ESMMA, and lower PMMA were not different from other groups. After multivariate analysis, ESMCSA < lower quartile was significantly associated with all-cause mortality (hazards ratio, 1.96; P = 0.030), whereas, ESMMA < median, PMCSA < lower quartile, and PMMA < median were not. Conclusions: Low ESMCSA on CT images may be a strong risk factor for all-cause mortality in IPF patients nationwide by MDD diagnosis.
Surface Characterization of Carbon Fibers as Anode Materials for Li Secondary Batteries
Takamura, Tsutomu,Awano, Hidekazu,Ura, Tetsuya,Ikezawa, Yasunari 한국분석과학회 1995 분석과학 Vol.8 No.4
Pitch-based mesophase carbon fibers prepared at different temperatures were heat-treated at temperatures lower than those of the preparation and the electrochemical Li doping/undoping characteristics were evaluated in relation to the data of IR, mass, etc. Presence of surface hydroxyls were confirmed by FTIR for lower temperature sample which showed poor anode characteristics. Upon oxidative heating, removal of surface hydroxyls took place, resulting in a remarkable improvement of the electrode characteristics. At the same time, surface roughening took place, which was confirmed by SEM and double layer capacity measurements. In situ mass spectra obesrved during the heat-treatments showed gas evolution of $H_2O$, CO, $CO_2$, $C_2H_4$, and/or $H_2$ depending on the conditions. These data together with those of weight loss and conductivity provided us a valuable information in regard to the evaluation of the electrochemical characteristics.

In June 2016, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) in Japan delivered countermeasures against long-period ground motions caused by strong earthquakes along the Nankai trough. However, the countermeasures do not cover high-rise buildings equal to or shorter than 60 m in height, which do not require earthquake response analyses in the seismic design. Hence, in the present study, earthquake response analyses for such high-rise reinforced concrete (RC) buildings were performed under artificial ground motions assumed in the OS1 and OS2 regions to determine the base shear coefficients that satisfy a given safety demand. Furthermore, the results from the earthquake response analyses were estimated by the authors' proposed method based on the equivalent linearization method, showing good agreement and inspiring suggestions for more accurate and simplified estimations.
Size Effect of the Domain-Wall Magnetoreristance in TbFeCo Wires
Do Bang,Hiroyuki Awano 한국물리학회 2013 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.62 No.12
We studied the domain-wall (DW)-induced magnetoresistance (MR) effect in TbFeCo wires witha thickness of 18 nm and different widths at room temperature. In wide (up to 10-µm-width) wires, small MR values that weakly depended on the number of DWs inside the wires, were obtained. This could be attributed to multi-domain structures that reduced the spin asymmetry in the wire. For all wires, the MR values strongly depended on the bias current. In a narrow (0.8-µm-width)wire with a single DW structure, large MR values of up to 8% were observed at a low bias currentand depended on the DW structure inside the TbFeCo wires. On the other hand, the MR valueswere greatly reduced at large bias currents, which induced magnon and phonon scattering effects. The contribution of the single DW resistivity to the MR effect was found to be large for a narrowwire due to the large spin asymmetry of conduction electrons through the DWs. The well-definedand controllable number of DWs inside magnetic wires is expected to obtain high and multi-levelMR values as well as high potentials for future magnetic devices.

The distribution of arabino-4-O-methylglucuronoxylans (AGXs) and O-acetyl-galactoglucomamians (GGMs) in warts and the warty layer of tracheids in normal wood (NW) and compression wood (CW) of Cryptomeria japonica was investigated. Under field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) observation, warts and the warty layer of delignified NW and CW tracheids were degraded by xylanase treatment, indicating that warts and the warty layer contain high amounts of AGXs. However, the effect of xylanase was not observed in NW and CW tracheids before delignification, suggesting that AGXs in warts and the warty layer may be encrusted with lignin. After β-mannanase treatment, no noticeable changes were observed in warts and the warty layer of NW tracheids, indicating that warts and the warty layer contain either no or very few GGMs. Similar results to FE-SEM observations were also observed with immunogold labeling. AGX labeling was observed in warts and the warty layer of NW and CW tracheids, while GGM labeling was not detected. NW tracheids showed a much stronger density of AGX labeling than did CW tracheids in warts and the warty layer, indicating differences in the chemical compositions of warts and the warty layer between NW and CW tracheids.

$>LaMnO_3$</TEX, $(La, Sr)MO_3$, and $(La, Sr)MO_3/YSZ$ gel films were deposited by spin-coating technique on scandium-doped zirconia (YSZ) substrate using the precursor solution prepared from $La(O-i-C_3H_7)_3$, $Co(CH_3COO)_2$or $Mn(O-i-C_3H_7)_2$,2-methoxyethanol, and polyethylene glycol. By heat-treating the gel films, the electrochemical cells, $(La, Sr)MnO_3{\mid}ScSZ{\mid}Pt$ were fabricated. The effect of polyethylene glycol on the microstructure evolution of $$LaCoO_3and $LaMnO_3$thin films was investigated, and NOx decomposition characteristics of the electrochemical cells were investigated at $500^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. By applying a direct current to the $(La, Sr)MnO_3{\mid}ScSZ{\mid}Pt$ electrochemical cell, good NOx conversion rate could be obtained relatively at low current value even if excess oxygen is included in the reaction gas mixture.

We demonstrated domain wall (DW)-induced anomalous magnetoresistance (MR) generated in asymmetric and symmetric ferrimagnetic Tb/Co multilayered, and Tb–Co alloyed wires. The extraordinary Hall effect (EHE)- induced circulating currents in the vicinity of DWs between longitudinal voltage probes are assigned to the anomalous MR. A large anomalous MR ~1.5% was obtained in the asymmetric Tb/Co multilayered wire. The large MR can be attributed to an addition of spin Hall current with a long coherence length from an adjacent Pt layer. These results open new possibilities for the use of ferrimagnetic multilayered wires beyond multi-function devices.
