• Does Visitation Dictate Animal Welfare in Captivity? : A Case Study of Tigers and Leopards from National Zoological Park, New Delhi

        Gupta, Avni,Vashisth, Saurabh,Sharma, Mahima,Hore, Upamanyu,Lee, Hang,Pandey, Puneet National Institute of Ecology 2022 Proceedings of NIE Vol.3 No.2

Zoological Parks house exclusive animal species, thus creating a source of education and awareness for visitors. Big cats like tigers and leopards are among the most visited species in zoos globally. However, they often display stressful or stereotypic behaviours. Such behaviours are influenced by multiple factors including visitors, animal history, and captive environment. To understand this impact, we investigated the behavioural response of tigers and leopards to visitation, captive, and biological factors. The behaviour of eight big cats housed in the National Zoological Park, New Delhi, was monitored using focal sampling technique during May and June 2019. We recorded the captive and biological factors and visitor density for the subjects. The study revealed high proportions of inactive and stereotypic behaviours amongst the species. Tigers and leopards were found to perform stereotypic behaviours for 22% and 28% of their time, respectively. Generalised Linear Models revealed a significant variation of stereotypy in association with the factors. Stereotypy was influenced by visitor density, age, sex, breeding history, coat colour, and enclosure design. Adults, males, white-coated, previously bred, and those housed in smaller and simple enclosures display more stereotypy than young, females, normal-coated, unbred, and those housed in larger and complex enclosures, respectively. A high density of visitors induced more stereotypic behaviours amongst the big cats. As providing entertainment and awareness amongst the public is one of the fundamental objectives of the zoo, visitors can not be avoided. Thus, we suggest providing appropriate enrichments that would reduce stereotypies and promote naturalistic behaviours.

A mosaic of identities, opportunities, and challenges: How intersectionality shapes the experiences of female water, sanitation, and hygiene entrepreneurs in Indonesia

        Kumar Avni,Siscawati Mia,Anggriani Septiani,Ratnasari,Nailah,Willetts Juliet 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2023 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.29 No.3

Many intersecting factors influence the identity, motivations, and experiences of women entrepreneurs. This paper explores the experiences of female water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) entrepreneurs in the context of the region of Nusa Tenggara in Eastern Indonesia. We conducted in-depth interviews with a diverse set of female WASH entrepreneurs, and applied intersectionality concepts in combination with the Gender at Work analytical framework [Rao et al., 2016. Gender at work: Theory and practice for 21st century organizations. Routledge] to analyze and present qualitative data. This approach and combined framing helped to unpack the varied identities and characteristics such as occupation, educational background, disability, social position, religion, age, economic status, and ethnicity that shape their experiences within societal structures including ableism, patriarchy, and social class. The findings demonstrate how all these aspects influence individual consciousness and capabilities, help to navigate, and challenge structural social norms that transcend ethnicity and religion, and build social networks, to support entrepreneurial activity and facilitate access to resources. This study has implications for development practitioners who can strengthen consideration of these complexities while designing training programs for private and public sector workforces with responsibility for WASH service delivery.

      • Poster Session:PS 0208 ; Family Medicine : Marital Satisfaction Levels of Diabetic and Non-Diabetic Couples

        ( Huseyin Avni Sahin ),( Gulnihal Guvendi ),( Dilek Kusaslan ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: Family dynamics are increasingly recognized as affecting factor of management of Diabetes Mellitus (DM): however, little research has been done until recently. The aim of this study is to compare the marital satisfaction levels of couples with Diabetes and those without the disease in Eastern Turkey. Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted among couples during June 2014 at a major tertiary hospital in Van, Turkey. Couples previously diagnosed as Diabetes Mellitus consisted the Diabetic Group and couples without Diabetes Mellitus and any other chronical disease consisted the Non Diabetic Group. Randomly selected 326 respondents were interviewed using the Turkish version of the Marital Satisfaction Scale to assess the satisfaction levels. Data was analyzed using SPSS computer software version 21 and the independent sample t-tests were the key statistical test. Results: The mean age was 53.7 years among Diabetic Group (N=109) and 40.8 among Non-Diabetic group (N=217) (p=0001). The mean Body Mass Index was 31.6 among Diabetic Group and 28.5 among Non-Diabetic group (p=0001). The mean Diastolic Blood Pressure was 84.7 mm Hg among Diabetic Group and 77.3 mm Hg among Non-Diabetic group (p=0.0001). The mean number of children was 5.3 among Diabetic Group and 4.1 among Non-Diabetic group (p=0.0001). The mean Marital Satisfaction Score was 107.3 (male=112.2, female=102.8) among Diabetic Group and 99.2 (male=109.4, female=93.5) among Non-Diabetic group (p=0.004). Conclusions: Diabetes is of growing public health concern in developing countries like Turkey. Marital stasifaction levels of Diabetic couples should be tested in order to identify and implement appropriate interventions. As Marital Satisfaction levels of Non-Diabetic women are lower more care should be given by the physicians to support Non-Diabetic women.

Evaluation of abiotic stress tolerance and physiological characteristics of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Kennebec) that heterologously expresses the rice Osmyb4 gene

        Gulsum Aydin,Huseyin Avni Oktem,Meral Yucel,Ming-Tsair Chan 한국식물생명공학회 2014 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.8 No.3

MYB transcription factors are involved indiverse biochemical and physiological processes, includinghormone signaling, defense, and stress responses. In thepresent study, we developed a transgenic potato (Solanumtuberosum L. cv. Kennebec) expressing the rice Osmyb4gene, which encodes the transcription factor MYB4. Thetransgene was under the control of either the constitutiveCaMV35S promoter or the stress-induced ArabidopsisCOR15a promoter. The potential involvement of MYB4 incertain physiological processes and the abiotic stressresponse in the potato was evaluated. The transgenic plantsdid not exhibit growth retardation, and they showed nosignificant difference (P\0.05) in tuber yield from that ofnon-transgenic wild-type plants. Although the chlorophylla and b as well as the anthocyanin contents of the sixtransgenic lines were similar to those of the wild type, thetransgenic line S2 presented a significantly higher carotenoidcontent. The total sugar contents of the lines S2 andM48 were significantly higher than that of the wild-typeplants. S2 and M48 were significantly more tolerant ofsalinity than the wild type, according to measured growthparameters. Transgenic plants grown under a high concentrationof boric acid (3 mM) exhibited greater survivalrates than non-transgenic control plants. On the other hand, the transgenic plants did not show an improvement infreezing tolerance. Overall, our results indicated thatMYB4 may affect diverse processes such as carotenoidbiosynthesis, sugar metabolism, and salinity tolerance inpotato, and that it may be an upstream regulatory elementof these processes.

        Anju Hooda,S.P. Khatkar,Avni Khatkar,Sangeeta Chahar,Sushma Devi,Jyoti Dalal,V.B. Taxak 한국물리학회 2019 Current Applied Physics Vol.19 No.4

An efficient and cost-effective technique, solution combustion synthesis was used to synthesize Dy3+ doped SrGdAlO4 nanophosphor utilizing urea as a suitable fuel. The tetragonal phase and nano-crystallinity of the synthesized phosphor belonging to I4/mmm space group was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) technique respectively. Various crystal structure parameters and refined atomic positions of host matrix and SrGd0.95Dy0.05AlO4 nanophosphor were determined by Rietveld refinement. The two intense bands i.e. blue and yellow bands were observed in photoluminescence emission spectrum recorded at 352 nm excitation wavelength, associated to transitions 4F9/2→6H15/2 (484 nm) and 4F9/2→6H13/2 (575 nm) respectively. Photometric characterizations revealed the emission of white color by the synthesized nanophosphor proving its wide applications in WLEDs (white light emitting diodes). Band gap values calculated using diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) were found to vary in the range of 5.50 eV–5.59 eV for host and doped lattice system. Keeping in mind, the concentration quenching phenomenon, SrGd0.95Dy0.05AlO4 was considered as optimized nanophosphor for WLEDs.

Main supporters were the daughters/son (41%) and couples (38%) during the illness. Although 16% were threatened to be abandon, 79% were afraid of being abandon. 45% of the patients thought that they were neglected. Only female patients stated physical violence and before the illness rate was 18% (100% by the male partner) and it decreased to 8% (87.5% by the partner and 12.5 % by the son) after the illness. Conclusions: Even though violence rate among cancer patients decreased during the illness period it is still a serious public health problem. Health-care providers should increase their awareness to protect the cancer patients from violence. Education and improvements in economic autonomy and society`s attitudes may also reduce violence towards cancer patients.

      • p62- and ubiquitin-dependent stress-induced autophagy of the mammalian 26S proteasome

        Cohen-Kaplan, Victoria,Livneh, Ido,Avni, Noa,Fabre, Bertrand,Ziv, Tamar,Kwon, Yong Tae,Ciechanover, Aaron National Academy of Sciences 2016 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF Vol.113 No.47

The ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy are the two main proteolytic systems involved in, among other functions, the maintenance of cell integrity by eliminating misfolded and damaged proteins and organelles. Both systems remove their targets after their conjugation with ubiquitin. An interesting, yet incompletely understood problem relates to the fate of the components of the two systems. Here we provide evidence that amino acid starvation enhances polyubiquitination on specific sites of the proteasome, a modification essential for its targeting to the autophagic machinery. The uptake of the ubiquitinated proteasome is mediated by its interaction with the ubiquitin-associated domain of p62/SQSTM1, a process that also requires interaction with LC3. Importantly, deletion of the PB1 domain of p62, which is important for the targeting of ubiquitinated substrates to the proteasome, has no effect on stress-induced autophagy of this proteolytic machinery, suggesting that the domain of p62 that binds to the proteasome determines the function of p62 in either targeting substrates to the proteasome or targeting the proteasome to autophagy.

Long-term results in the treatment of fistula-in-ano with fibrin glue

        Gokturk Maralcan,?lyas Ba?konu?,Avni Gokalp,Ersin Borazan,Ahmet Balk 대한외과학회 2011 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.81 No.3

Purpose: This prospective study was done to analyze the efficacy of commercial fibrin glue application in the healing of patients with fistulas-in-ano from a long-term (mean 4.5 years) research period. Methods: This clinical trial of forty-six patients was performed during the period from January 2004 to February 2005. Thirty-nine men and seven women were treated for a fistula-in-ano with a commercial fibrin glue application. In the operating room, the patients underwent an anorectal examination under spinal anesthesia. The external and internal fistula tract openings were then identified. The fistula tract was curetted. Fibrin glue was injected into the external fistula opening until the fibrin glue could be seen coming from the internal opening. Results: The overall initial success rate was 86.95% (40/46). Recurrence rate was 41.30% (19/46). Two patients underwent a re-application with fibrin glue and the fistulas of these patients closed. The total recurrence rate was 36.95% (17/46). The long-term overall success rate was 63.04% (29/46). Conclusion: Fibrin glue application was thus found to be an easy, safe, acceptable, successful alternative treatment in the management of fistulas-in-ano. Choosing the patient correctly is very important because long (more than 4 cm) and non-ramificate fistula tracts usually close with commercial fibrin glue.
