      • PERSONAL PRIVACY AND INTERACTIONAL PATTERNS IN A NURSING HOME

        In this nursing home study, we observed that residents were treated by staff or treated each other as friends, as strangers. or. as objects. Analysis of communication patterns (i.e., between residents. resident-to-naff, staff-to-resident, or between staff members) revealed that when the resident was viewed as a friend, interaction was considerate and the individual's right to privacy was respected; and when a resident was viewed as a stranger, interaction was courteous, superficial. and formal. bur the right to privacy was still respected. Personal privacy norms were violated when an individual was viewed as an object. As the characteristics of the personalized. alienated. and objectified relationships that occurred between all groups in the setting were delineated. theoretical insights into the concept of privacy emerged. We suggest thor privacy violations occur more easily if the other person is depersonalized. This framework provides important insights into caring and the provision of nursing care.

        Synthesis of Water-Soluble Chitosan-g-PEO and Its Application for Preparation of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Aqueous Media

        A simple and useful method to synthesize water-soluble chitosan is proposed. Water-soluble chitosan-gpoly(ethylene oxide) could be synthesized readily by modification of authentic chitosan with a 150,000 g/mol molecular weight using ω-anhydride-functionalized poly(ethylene oxide)s (PEOs) with or without small molecular anhydride compounds, such as phthalic anhydride or acetic anhydride through a ‘grafting onto’ method. The PEOgrafting method in the presence of acetic anhydride leading to partial acetylation appears to be more effective in synthesizing relatively high water-soluble chitosan. The bactericidal properties of PEO-modified chitosan and small molecular anhydride over a moderate concentration range (over 500 μg/mL) suggest that they might be used in the biomedical field. The PEO-grafted chitosans were used successfully as polymeric stabilizers to prepare nano-sized iron oxide particles as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent for tumor cells. The size of the iron oxide nanoparticles stabilized by modified chitosans was controlled in the range of 5 to 30 nm with superparamagnetic properties in aqueous media. All the materials were characterized by 1H NMR, UV/Visible spectroscopy, TEM,magnetization, and XRD pattern analyses.

        GALAXY CLUSTERS DISCOVERED VIA THE SUNYAEV-ZEL'DOVICH EFFECT IN THE 2500-SQUARE-DEGREE SPT-SZ SURVEY

        <P>We present a catalog of galaxy clusters selected via their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect signature from 2500 deg(2) of South Pole Telescope (SPT) data. This work represents the complete sample of clusters detected at high significance in the 2500 deg(2) SPT-SZ survey, which was completed in 2011. A total of 677 (409) cluster candidates are identified above a signal-to-noise threshold of xi = 4.5 (5.0). Ground-and space-based optical and near-infrared (NIR) imaging confirms overdensities of similarly colored galaxies in the direction of 516 (or 76%) of the xi > 4.5 candidates and 387 (or 95%) of the xi > 5 candidates; the measured purity is consistent with expectations from simulations. Of these confirmed clusters, 415 were first identified in SPT data, including 251 new discoveries reported in this work. We estimate photometric redshifts for all candidates with identified optical and/or NIR counterparts; we additionally report redshifts derived from spectroscopic observations for 141 of these systems. The mass threshold of the catalog is roughly independent of redshift above z similar to 0.25 leading to a sample of massive clusters that extends to high redshift. The median mass of the sample is M-500c(rho(crit)) similar to 3.5 x 10(14) M-circle dot h(70)(-1) 70, the median redshift is z(med) = 0.55, and the highest-redshift systems are at z > 1.4. The combination of large redshift extent, clean selection, and high typical mass makes this cluster sample of particular interest for cosmological analyses and studies of cluster formation and evolution.</P>
