      • Reality and Fiction: Audiovisual Representations of Traditional Musical Cultures in China

Leonardo D’Amico 아시아음악학회 2017 Asian Musicology Vol.27 No.-

‘Real’ and ‘fake’ in filmic representation is a long-standing dilemma. Reality is an age-old anthropological and philosophical debate characterized by the dialectical tension within things as they appear through our representation and what they ‘really’ are. Film as an audiovisual representation of the world is a textual “construct” in the same way as the written text; writing on musical cultures as well as filming musical cultures are both unavoidably form of “creative” treatment of a (musical) reality. The ‘crisis of representation’ of the 1970s in visual anthropology studies brought inevitably to redefine the boundaries between fictional and documentary film, encouraging new audiovisual languages, such as the docu-fiction or "ethno-fiction", as result of the hybridization of the documentary-style languages and the narrative conventions of fictional-theatrical film. This article offers an overview of different ways of representing traditional music -with a particular enphasis on documentary, fictional and docu-fiction films dealing with traditional music in China - through the use of a variety of cinematic languages, interweaving brief historical notes of the development of early Chinese cinema with different theoretical approaches expressed in visual anthropology and ethnomusicology.

The Spinner-IBMM mouse is a new spontaneous mutant in the Tmie gene

        E. D’Amico,Virginie Stygelbout,Stéphane Schurmans 한국유전학회 2012 Genes & Genomics Vol.34 No.1

A recessively inherited, spontaneous mutation named Spinner-IBMM (SI) was identified in a transgenic mouse colony in our institute. SI mutant mice displayed hyperactivity, including a severe circling behavior, ataxia and inability to swim. Gene mapping revealed that the causative gene was located on a 35 Mb DNA fragment on chromosome 9. Candidate genes sequencing in this DNA fragment identified a new mutant allele in the Tmie gene. The identified mutant is characterized by a nucleotide deletion in exon 5, leading to a frameshift and a premature STOP codon. It has been reported that inactivating mutations in the mouse Tmie gene result in an identical phenotype, probably resulting from defects in the inner ear. However, the exact function of the Tmie protein in the ear and other organs is still unknown. The analysis of this new mouse mutant could contribute to a better understanding of Tmie functions in vivo in the ear and other organs.

Management of grade 3 acute dermatitis with moist desquamation after adjuvant chest wall radiotherapy: a case report

        Durim Delishaj,Romerai D’amico,Daniela Corvi,Giuseppe De Nobili,Alessandro Alghisi,Francesco Colangelo,Alessandra Cocchi,Fausto Declich,Carlo Pietro Soatti 대한방사선종양학회 2020 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.38 No.4

We reported a successful case management of G3 skin acute dermatitis in a 32-year-old woman affected by locally advanced breast cancer underwent adjuvant chest wall irradiation. Skin acute toxicity with dry desquamation areas was treated daily with advanced dressing using physiological solution, oxygen therapy and applying hyaluronic acid gauze. At the end of radiotherapy treatment, G3 skin acute dermatitis with moist desquamation was observed, so the patient continued advanced wound dressing shifted to twice weekly with physiological solution, oxygen therapy and applying hydrocolloid dressing. The patient completed radiotherapy treatment without interruption and one month after treatment acute skin toxicity was resolved with pain relief. We suggest that advanced dressing with trained nursing staff is essential in this sub-set of patients due to guaranteed continuation of radiotherapy treatment, indispensable to ensure patient cure.

Nasal septum angiofibroma: a rare condition with an unusual onset

        Maria Carla Spinosi,Francesca D’Amico,Chiara Mezzedimi,Cristiana Bellan,Manuela Cirami,Ilaria Innocenti Paganelli 대한구강악안면외과학회 2019 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.45 No.1

The characteristics of extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibromas tend to be different from angiofibromas of the nasopharynx according to patient gender, patient age, prevalence, affected site, pathogenesis, and clinical and epidemiological features. We report a case of an extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in a 28-year-old man referred to the ENT Clinic for right-sided epistaxis, airflow impairment and nasal swelling. The right nostril was completely occluded works by a reddish-yellow mass that bled easily. The computed tomography scan revealed an “inhomogeneous solid lesion in the nasal fossa”. With the patient under general anesthesia, the formation in the anterior portion of the right side of the nasal septum was removed up to its vascular base. Although electrical cauterization efficiently controlled the bleeding, we abraded the sub-perichondral area to prevent further bleeding as well as recurrence. The histological exam report confirmed the diagnosis of angiofibroma. As in our case, epistaxis is commonly the presenting sign of angiofibroma. Yet its onset was peculiar, given that the bleeding started with a low impact trauma. The nasal swelling was also a relevant feature as well as the breathing impairment. Although uncommon, nasal septal angiofibromas should considered in patients with epistaxis.

Post-void residual urine ratio: A novel clinical approach to the post-void residual urine in the assessment of males with lower urinary tract symptoms

        Emanuele Rubilotta,Matteo Balzarro,Nicolò Trabacchin,Rita Righetti,Antonio D'Amico,Jerry G. Blaivas,Alessandro Antonelli 대한비뇨의학회 2021 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.62 No.4

Purpose: To assess the correlation between post-void residual urine ratio (PVR-R) and pathological bladder emptying diagnosed by pressure-flow studies (PFS) in males with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Materials and Methods: PVR-R and PVR urine were evaluated in 410 males underwent PFS for LUTS. PVR-R was the percentage of PVR to bladder volume (voided volume+PVR). Schafer and International Continence Society (ICS) nomograms, Bladder Contractility Index (BCI) were used to diagnose bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and detrusor underactivity (DUA). We subdivided the cohort in 4 groups: Group I, BOO+/DUA+; Group II, BOO-/DUA+; Group III, BOO+/DUA−; Group IV, BOO−/DUA− (control group). We subdivided the 4 groups according to PVR-R strata: (1) 0%–20%; (2) 21%–40%; (3) 41%–60%; (4) 61%–80%; (5) 81%–100%. Results: Group I had a greater median PVR-R (50%) with a >40% in 61.4% of the cohort. Median PVR-R was 16.6% in Group II, 24% in Group III, and 0% in the control Group. According to ICS nomograms and BCI, median PVR-R and PVR were significantly higher (p<0.001) in obstructed and underactive males. PVR-R threshold of 20% allowed to recognize males with voiding disorders with high sensibility, specificity, PPV, and NPV. A PVR-R cut-off of 40% identified males with associated BOO and DUA and more severe voiding dysfunction. Conclusions: A higher PVR-R is related to a more severe pathological bladder emptying, and to the association of BOO and DUA. PVR-R may have a clinical role in first assessment of males with LUTS and severe voiding dysfunction.

EPDM with Biochar, Carbon Black, Aramid Pulp and Ionic Liquidcompatibilized Aramid Pulp

Vinícius Demétrio da Silva,Micaela Dani Ferrari,Rosmary Nichele Brandalise,Edilson Valmir Benvenutti,Henri Stephan Schrekker,Sandro Campos Amico 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.4

Carbon black (CB) is a fossil fuel-derived product widely used as reinforcement in the rubber industry despite itspollution potential and its high energy-demanding production. Biochar, on the other hand, is a renewable source of carbonrecently studied for the partial substitution of CB in elastomeric materials. Aramid pulp/fibers have also been used in avariety of applications in this sector, usually after a surface treatment. In this work, the use of aramid pulp (AP) and biochar inthe preparation of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) composites and hybrid composites has been studied. The 1-nbutyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate ionic liquid (IL) was used as compatibilizer in AP, and the rubber-fillerinteraction was studied via thermal, rheometric, mechanical, and swelling analyses. The biochar-EPDM and the referenceCB-EDPM compounds showed similar hardness, modulus at 50 % strain and tear strength results. Among the tested fillers,AP was identified as the most effective to obtain EPDM composites with enhanced properties. A synergistic effect of biocharand IL-treated AP was found, resulting in higher tensile strength for the hybrid formulation (EPDM/Bio05AP05IL)compared to those with just biochar or CB, and reasonable strain at break. In all, the hybrid composites of EPDM reinforcedwith biochar and AP showed the potential to partially or fully replace CB formulations.

Tie1 controls angiopoietin function in vascular remodeling and inflammation

        Korhonen, Emilia A.,Lampinen, Anita,Giri, Hemant,Anisimov, Andrey,Kim, Minah,Allen, Breanna,Fang, Shentong,D Amico, Gabriela,Sipilä,, Tuomas J.,Lohela, Marja American Society for Clinical Investigation 2016 The Journal of clinical investigation Vol.126 No.9

<P>The angiopoietin/Tie (ANG/Tie) receptor system controls developmental and tumor angiogenesis, inflammatory vascular remodeling, and vessel leakage. ANG1 is a Tie2 agonist that promotes vascular stabilization in inflammation and sepsis, whereas ANG2 is a context-dependent Tie2 agonist or antagonist. A limited understanding of ANG signaling mechanisms and the orphan receptor Tie1 has hindered development of ANG/Tie-targeted therapeutics. Here, we determined that both ANG1 and ANG2 binding to Tie2 increases Tie1-Tie2 interactions in a 131 integrin-dependent manner and that Tie1 regulates ANG-induced Tie2 trafficking in endothelial cells. Endothelial Tie1 was essential for the agonist activity of ANG1 and autocrine ANG2. Deletion of endothelial Tiel in mice reduced Tie2 phosphorylation and downstream Akt activation, increased FOXO1 nuclear localization and transcriptional activation, and prevented ANG1- and ANG2-induced capillary-to-venous remodeling. However, in acute endotoxemia, the Tie1 ectodomain that is responsible for interaction with Tie2 was rapidly cleaved, ANG1 agonist activity was decreased, and autocrine ANG2 agonist activity was lost, which led to suppression of Tie2 signaling. Tie1 cleavage also occurred in patients with hantavirus infection. These results support a model in which Tie1 directly interacts with Tie2 to promote ANG-induced vascular responses under noninflammatory conditions, whereas in inflammation, Tie1 cleavage contributes to loss of ANG2 agonist activity and vascular stability.</P>

      • Common and distinct patterns of grey-matter volume alteration in major depression and bipolar disorder: evidence from voxel-based meta-analysis

        Wise, T,Radua, J,Via, E,Cardoner, N,Abe, O,Adams, T M,Amico, F,Cheng, Y,Cole, J H,de Azevedo Marques Pé,rico, C,Dickstein, D P,Farrow, T F D,Frodl, T,Wagner, G,Gotlib, I H,Gruber, O,Ham, B J,Job Macmillan Publishers Limited, part of Springer Nat 2017 Molecular psychiatry Vol.22 No.10

<P>Finding robust brain substrates of mood disorders is an important target for research. The degree to which major depression (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are associated with common and/or distinct patterns of volumetric changes is nevertheless unclear. Furthermore, the extant literature is heterogeneous with respect to the nature of these changes. We report a meta-analysis of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies in MDD and BD. We identified studies published up to January 2015 that compared grey matter in MDD (50 data sets including 4101 individuals) and BD (36 data sets including 2407 individuals) using whole-brain VBM. We used statistical maps from the studies included where available and reported peak coordinates otherwise. Group comparisons and conjunction analyses identified regions in which the disorders showed common and distinct patterns of volumetric alteration. Both disorders were associated with lower grey-matter volume relative to healthy individuals in a number of areas. Conjunction analysis showed smaller volumes in both disorders in clusters in the dorsomedial and ventromedial prefrontal cortex, including the anterior cingulate cortex and bilateral insula. Group comparisons indicated that findings of smaller grey-matter volumes relative to controls in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and left hippocampus, along with cerebellar, temporal and parietal regions were more substantial in major depression. These results suggest that MDD and BD are characterised by both common and distinct patterns of grey-matter volume changes. This combination of differences and similarities has the potential to inform the development of diagnostic biomarkers for these conditions.</P>
