      • Wide Range Parametric Study for the Pool Boiling of Nano-fluids with a Circular Plate Heater

        <P>The characteristics of boiling and critical heat flux (CHF) behavior of nano-fluids with alumina and silver nano-particles suspended in de-ionized water (pure water) were studied with circular plate heaters in the present study. Enhancements of CHF in nano-fluids in the wide range of particle sizes and concentrations were compared with those in pure water. Also, the effects of the particle deposition on CHF enhancement were investigated. All experiments were performed at the atmospheric pressure condition. The results show that the measured boiling curves in nano-fluids were shifted to the right and CHF were significantly enhanced for different nano-particle sizes and concentrations. The CHF of nano-fluids was increased as the size of the nano-particles decreased. On the other hand, nano-particle concentration value showing the maximum CHF had a critical value. In each pool boiling experiment of nano-fluids, nano-particles were deposited on the heater surface. Assuming that this phenomenon caused the CHF enhancement, pool boiling experiments of pure water were carried out with these nano-particle deposited heaters. The results of these tests were similar to those of the test of the nano-fluids for the CHF enhancement. The main cause of CHF enhancement was found to be the change of the heater surface structure. In order to analyze boiling phenomena of pure water and Al2O3 nano-fluids, boiling process was visualized by using a high speed camera.</P>

        Experimental study on circular CFST short columns with intermittently welded stiffeners

        This paper deals with the experimental study on strength the strength and deformation characteristics of short circular Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFST) columns. Effect of vertical stiffeners on the behavior of the column is studied under axial compressive loading. Intermittently welded vertical stiffeners are used to strengthen the tubes. Stiffeners are attached to the inner surface of tube by welding through pre drilled holes on the tube. The variable of the study is the spacing of the weld between stiffeners and circular tube. A total of 5 specimens with different weld spacing (60 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm and 350 mm) were prepared and tested. Short CFST columns of height 350 mm, outer tube diameter of 165 mm and thickness of 4.5 mm were used in the study. Concrete of cube compressive strength 41 N/mm<sup>2</sup> and steel tubes with yield strength 310 N/mm<sup>2</sup> are adopted. The test results indicate that the strength and deformation of the circular CFST column is found to be significantly influenced by the weld spacing. The ultimate axial load carrying capacity was found to increase by 11% when the spacing of weld is reduced from 350 mm to 60 mm. The vertical stiffeners are found to effective in enhancing the initial stiffness and ductility of CFST columns. The prediction models were developed for strength and deformation of CFST columns. The prediction is found to be in good agreement with the corresponding test data.

        Design for shear strength of concrete beams longitudinally reinforced with GFRP bars

        In this paper, a model for the evaluation of shear strength of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP)-reinforced concrete beams is given. The survey of literature indicates that the FRP reinforced beams testedwith shear span to depth ratio less than or equal to 1.0 is limited. In this study, eight concrete beamsreinforced with GFRP rebars without stirrups are cast and tested over shear span to depth ratio of 0.5 and1.75. The concrete compressive strength is varied from 40.6 to 65.3 MPa. The longitudinal reinforcementratio is varied from 1.16 to 1.75. The experimental shear strength and load-deflection response of the beamsare determined and reported in this paper. A model is proposed for the prediction of shear strength of beamsreinforced with FRP bars. The proposed model accounts for compressive strength of concrete, modulus ofFRP rebar, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, shear span to depth ratio and size effect of beams. The shearstrength of FRP reinforced concrete beams predicted using the proposed model is found to be in betteragreement with the corresponding test data when compared with the shear strength predicted using theeleven models published in the literature. Design example of FRP reinforced concrete beam is also given inthe appendix.

      • Fresh and hardened properties of concrete containing cold bonded aggregates

        The properties of fresh and hardened concrete made using three types of artificial cold bonded aggregates are determined. The properties, namely, slump, water absorption, compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of concrete containing artificial aggregate are reported. The variables considered are aggregate type and water-to-cement ratio. Three types of cold bonded aggregates are prepared using fly ash and quarry dust. The water-to-cement ratio of 0.35, 0.45, 0.55 and 0.65 is used. The test result indicates that artificial aggregates can be recommended for making the concrete up to a strength grade of 38 MPa. The use of quarry dust in the production of artificial aggregate mitigates environmental concerns on disposal problems of the dust. Hence, the alternate material proposed in this study is a green technology in concrete production.

        Designing an Intelligent Adver tising Business Model in Seoul’s Metro Network

        Modern businesses are adopting new technologies to serve their markets better as well as to improve efficiency and productivity. The advertising industry has continuously experienced disruptions from the traditional channels (radio, television and print media) to new complex ones including internet, social media and mobile-based advertising. This case study focuses on proposing intelligent advertising business model in Seoul’s metro network. Seoul has one of the world’s busiest metro network and transports a huge number of travelers on a daily basis. The high number of travelers coupled with a well-planned metro network creates a platform where marketers can initiate engagement and interact with both customers and potential customers. In the current advertising model, advertising is on illuminated and framed posters in the stations and in-car, non-illuminated posters, and digital screens that show scheduled arrivals and departures of metros. Some stations have digital screens that show adverts but they do not have location capability. Most of the current advertising media have one key limitation: space. For posters whether illuminated or not, one space can host only one advert at a time. Empirical literatures show that there is room for improving this advertising model and eliminate the space limitation by replacing the poster adverts with digital advertising platform. This new model will not only be digital, but will also provide intelligent advertising platform that is driven by data. The digital platform will incorporate location sensing, e-commerce, and mobile platform to create new value to all stakeholders. Travel cards used in the metro will be registered and the card scanners will have a capability to capture traveler’s data when travelers tap their cards. This data once analyzed will make it possible to identify different customer groups. Advertisers and marketers will then be able to target specific customer groups, customize adverts based on the targeted consumer group, and offer a wide variety of advertising formats. Format includes video, cinemagraphs, moving pictures, and animation. Different advert formats create different emotions in the customer’s mind and the goal should be to use format or combination of formats that arouse the expected emotion and lead to an engagement. Combination of different formats will be more effective and this can only work in a digital platform. Adverts will be location based, ensuring that adverts will show more frequently when the metro is near the premises of an advertiser. The advertising platform will automatically detect the next station and screens inside the metro will prioritize adverts in the station where the metro will be stopping.In the mobile platform, customers who opt to receive notifications will receive them when they approach the business premises of advertiser. The mobile platform will have indoor navigation for the underground shopping malls that will allow customers to search for facilities within the mall, products they may want to buy as well as deals going on in the underground mall. To create an end-to-end solution, the mobile solution will have a capability to allow customers purchase products through their phones, get coupons for deals, and review products and shops where they have bought a product. The indoor navigation will host intelligent mobile-based advertisement and a recommendation system. The indoor navigation will have adverts such that when a customer is searching for information, the recommendation system shows adverts that are near the place traveler is searching or in the direction that the traveler is moving. These adverts will be linked to the e-commerce platform such that if a customer clicks on an advert, it leads them to the product description page.         펄스형 초음파 신호에서 비선형 파라미터의 정밀 추정

        초음파 비선형성은 적층 구조물 내부의 미세크랙이나 계면 들뜸을 검출하기 위한 수단으로 주목받고 있다. 비선형 초음파의 특징적인 현상은 전파 과정중에 고조파가 발생되는 것이다. 그러므로 비선형성의 정량화를 위해서는 수신된 초음파 신호에 포함된 고조파 성분의 검출이 중요하며, 일반적으로 2차 조화 성분과 기본 주파수 성분의 진폭비가 비선형 파라미터로 이용되고 있다. 그러나 이 비선형 파라미터를 정확하게 추정할 수 있는 방법이 확립되어 있지 않기 때문에 현재까지는 현장적용에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 본 연구에서는 초음파 비선형 파라미터의 정밀 추정을 위한 신호 처리 기술을 제안하고자 한다 이 기술은 파워 스펙트럼과 바이스펙트럼 분석에 기초하며, 특히 본 연구에서는 초음파 현미경(SAM, scanning acoustic microscope)에 사용되는 펄스형 신호로부터 고조파를 검출하는데 주목하였다. 제안된 기법의 유효성은 틈새의 크기가 접촉 중심에서 반경 방향으로 일정하게 증가하는 뉴턴링(Newton-ring)과 칩의 윗면에 국부적인 들뜸을 가진 반도체 샘플에 대한 실험을 통해 검증되었다. 결과적으로 제안된 신호처리기법에 의해 획득된 비선형 파라미터는 계면 들뜸과 좋은 상관성을 보였다. Ultrasonic nonlinearity has been considered as a solution for the detection of microcracks or interfacial delamination in a layered structure. The distinguished phenomenon in nonlinear ultrasonics is the generation of higher-order harmonic waves during the propagation. Therefore, in order to quantify the nonlinearity, the conventional method measures a parameter defined as the amplitude ratio of a second-order harmonic component and a fundamental frequency component included in the propagated ultrasonic wave signal. However, its application In field inspection is not easy at the present stage because no standard methodology has yet been made to accurately estimate this parameter. Thus, the aim of this paper is to propose an advanced signal processing technique for the precise estimation of a nonlinear ultrasonic parameter, which is based on power spectral and bispectral analysis. The method of estimating power spectrum and bispectrum of the pulse-like ultrasonic wave signal used in the commercial SAM (scanning acoustic microscopy) equipment is especially considered in this study The usefulness of the proposed method Is confirmed by experiments for a Newton ring with a continuous air gap between two glasses and a real semiconductor sample with local delaminations. The results show that the nonlinear parameter obtained tv the proposed method had a good correlation with the delamination.
