        알-하피즈 아랍어 연어 사전에 관한 적절한 평가: 코퍼스를 기반으로 한 연구

        연어(collocation) 학습은 외국인 학생과 외국어 학습자에게 있어매우 중요하다. 원어민은 배우지 않아도 자연스럽고 능숙하게 연어를 구사할 수 있지만, 외국인 학습자가 원어민 수준으로 외국어 실력을 향상시키기 위해서는 연어를 학습해야만 한다. 서구 언어학자들과 사전편찬자들이 연어에 대해 관심을 갖기 시작한 것은1933 년부터이다. 최초의 영어 연어 사전(the BBI)이 1986 년에 출간된 반면 아랍어 연어 사전은 2004 년에 처음 발간되었다. 이 논문은 최초의 아랍어 연어 사전인 Al-Hafiz 사전에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 연어 사전은 번역가, 작가 그리고 외국어 학습자에게 없어서는 안될 필수품이다. 연어 번역에 나타나는 오역의 원인 중 하나는 번역가가 연어에 대한 자세한 설명과 예문이없는 일반 이중언어 사전을 참고하기 때문이다. 이 논문은 언어학적 방법론과 학문적 비평을 기반으로 한 현대 기술의 도입으로 아랍어-영어와 영어-아랍어 범용사전뿐만 아니라 특수사전 분야에서도 선도적 역할을 담당하게 하기 위함을 목적으로 한다. 이 점과 관련하여, 이 논문에서는 Al-Hafiz 사전의 장점과 단점에 대해살펴볼 것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 Al-Hafiz 사전에서 발견되는 오류들을 지적하기 보다는 오류의 수정을 통해 아랍어 사전편찬자들이 이런점들을 활용하여 같은 실수를 반복하지 않게 하는 데 있다. 사전편찬자가 사전 편찬에 좀더 심혈을 기울여서, 일반독자들조차쉽게 발견할 수 있는 오류들을 범하지 않았더라면 Al-Hafiz 사전은더 잘 만들어졌을 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 연어 사전을 편찬하는 데있어 코포라(corpora)나 소프트웨어(software) 같은 현대기술의 활용을 제안한다. Collocation has become one of the most controversial linguistic terms of today. As evidence to this, linguists did not agree up till today as to its exact definition, types or patterns. This may explain, to some extent, the scarcity of collocational dictionaries and their late appearance regardless of the huge number of collocations that can be found in general (i.e. noncollocational) lexicons and dictionaries of nearly all languages. Added to this is the difficulty of compiling a collocational dictionary unless modern technological tools such as computers, huge corpora, and text analysis software are used. This is true as the first English collocational dictionary appeared in 1986, the BBI, while in Arabic, the first one to appear was Hafiz in 2004 which is the main focus of this paper. This is exactly the reason behind our interest in this dictionary as it is already the first of its kind in Arabic as is mentioned by its author on its front cover. Collocation dictionaries are indispensable tools for the translator, writer and learner of any foreign language. One of the reasons behind the errors translators make in rendering collocations from one language to another is that they consult general-purpose bilingual dictionaries that do not provide the translators with detailed explanation or examples of collocations. Hence, the significance of this paper as it represents an attempt towards introducing a modern-technology-based linguistic methodological and academic criticism for evaluating such a great effort aiming at elevating it to the best shape it can be and to help it become a model to be emulated in the field of compiling specialized as well as non-specialized Arabic/ English and English/Arabic dictionaries.As the dictionary’s author has committed-according to Al-Halawani-a number of methodological, editorial and translational mistakes; a matter which makes it incumbent upon specialists to look into its content to clarify such mistakes and attempt to amend them whenever possible.

        Microbial Consortia in Oman Oil Fields: A Possible Use in Enhanced Oil Recovery

        Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is one of the most economical and efficient methods for extending the life of production wells in a declining reservoir. Microbial consortia from Wafra oil wells and Suwaihat production water, Al-Wusta region, Oman were screened. Microbial consortia in brine samples were identified using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and 16S rRNA gene sequences. The detected microbial consortia of Wafra oil wells were completely different from microbial consortia of Suwaihat formation water. A total of 33 genera and 58 species were identified in Wafra oil wells and Suwaihat production water. All of the identified microbial genera were first reported in Oman, with Caminicella sporogenes for the first time reported from oil fields. Most of the identified microorganisms were found to be anaerobic, thermophilic, and halophilic, and produced biogases, biosolvants, and biosurfactants as by-products, which may be good candidates for MEOR.

        Mosquitocidal and repellent activities of essential oils against Culex pipiens L.

        Plants are a prospective source of novel natural insect repellents and botanical insecticides. This study was conducted to investigate the chemical composition of the essential oils of three plants growing in Saudi Arabia, namely Ducrosia anethifolia, Achillea fragrantissima, and Teucrium polium; and to evaluate their potential mosquitocidal and repellent activities against adult female Culex pipiens L. The main components of the three oils were found to be decanal (28.9%) and chrysanthenyl acetate (10.04%), (D. anethifolia); sabinyl acetate (35.79) and artemesia ketone (18.28%) (A. fragrantissima); α-cadinol (49.53%) and δ-cadinene (10.23%) (T. polium). The oil of A. fragrantissima was the most toxic (LC50- = 0.11 μL/L air) followed by D. anethifolia and T. polium with LC50 values of 5.22 and 25.98 μL/L air, respectively. T. polium oil was the most repellent (292 min at 2 μL/cm2 ), followed by D. anethifolia and A. fragrantissima. The results indicate that the essential oils have a potential fumigant insecticidal and repellent activities for mosquito control.

      • Leisure Time Physical Activity in Saudi Arabia: Prevalence, Pattern and Determining Factors

        Background: Identification of reliable predictors of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) will enable healthcare providers to intervene and change the patterns of LTPA in the population to improve community health. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine prevalence and pattern of LTPA among adult Saudis aged 18-65 years, and to define the socio-demographic determinants that correlate with LTPA in Al-Hassa, Saudi Arabia. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study of 2176 adult Saudis attending urban and rural primary health care centers were selected using a multistage proportionate sampling method. Participants were personally interviewed to gather information regarding socio-demographics, physical activity pattern using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). Physical activity (PA) in each domain was expressed in metabolic equivalents (METs). Results: The median total METs minutes/week for LTPA for both genders was 256, higher for men (636 METs minutes/week) compared to women (249METs minutes/week). Overall, only 19.8% of the total PA was derived from LTPA. Of the sampled population 50.0% reported doing no leisure activity. Using the cut off of 600 METs-minutes/day or 150 minutes of moderate intensity over 5 or more days/week, only 21.0% of the included sample were considered as being sufficiently active and 10.4% were in the high active category with beneficial health effects. Multivariate regression analysis showed that male, younger age (<35 years), absence of chronic disease conditions and moderate level of total PA were significant predictors for being active in the LTPA domain. Conclusion: The prevalence and intensity of LTPA among the included sample demonstrated low levels. Nearly 80% of the included sample population did not achieve the recommended LTPA level with beneficial health effects. Female gender, urban residence and associated chronic diseases correlated with a low LTPA.

        Analysis and deep hydrodesulfurization reactivity of Saudi Arabian gas oils

        Gas oils obtained from Arabian Light (AL-GO), Arabian Medium (AM-GO) and Arabian Heavy (AH-GO)crude oils were subjected to detailed analysis in terms of reactive and refractory sulfur, nitrogen, as well as aromatic species. Deep hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of these gas oils over SiO2–Al2O3-supported CoMo and NiMo catalysts was studied using autoclave reactor either in one- or two-stage operations. AL-GO was easily and deeply desulfurized to 15 ppm over CoMo/Al2O3–SiO2 (catalyst X) at 340 8C and 5 MPa (H2) for 2 h. At the same conditions, AM-GO and AH-GO could be desulfurized to 70 and 78 ppm,respectively. Two-staged HDS, by combining CoMo and NiMo catalysts, in successive steps resulted in effective deep HDS. The replacement of hydrogen atmosphere after the first-stage (1 h) enhanced the AH-GO HDS during the second-stage (1 h) to 9 ppm. However, replacing the hydrogen in the secondstage with 5% H2S in hydrogen inhibited the HDS, resulting in product sulfur content of 15 ppm. Analysis of sulfur species indicate that significant fraction of reactive and refractory sulfur species were removed during the first-stage whereas the remaining refractory sulfur species were removed during the second-stage. Kinetic analysis indicates overwhelming influence of refractive sulfur species on the overall HDS. The results from this study show that two-stage scheme with optimum catalysts in series can be applied to overcome the difficulty to achieve deep HDS of AH-GO.

        Odds Ratio and Probability of Conception of Holstein Friesian Dairy Cows in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

        Logistic Regression Analysis was used to compute the odds ratio (OR) and probability of conception of Holstein dairy cows of AL-MARAIE company. Data consisted of 103,778 reproductive records collected from three farms in the central region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Records were classified according to lactation number, season of calving and milk level. At first lactation, OR of first service was 0.63 of other services and probability of pregnancy from first services was 0.39. Odds ratio increased to 1.72 at fourth lactation or probability of conception reached 0.63. The probability of conception increased from 0.39 for cows inseminated at first services to 0.75 at fifth service insemination. Odds ratio of cows calving in winter were higher than those calving in summer. Odds ratio of conception of low producing cows is about twice as likely to occur from first service as from other services. However, OR of conception of high producing cows was higher than one (probability=0.56) from first service and increased to 1.63 (probability=0.65) from third service. Odds ratio was in favor of the right uterus horn where probability of conception from first service was slightly greater than 50% in first and second lactations and less than 50% in favor of left horn in later lactations.

        Knowledge Sharing Among Accounting Students: An Exploratory Study

        This paper explores the attitudes of accounting students toward knowledge sharing at Umm Al-Gura University for the academic year 2013-2014. The study explored knowledge sharing among 202 accounting students at Umm Al-Gura University in session during the 2013- 2014 academic year. Primary data came from a 3-item questionnaire collected from students; secondary data were source from scholarly publication. Descriptive statistics was used. The findings of this study revealed that the students had a medium to high degree of positive attitude toward knowledge sharing. The students had a positive perception of the use of knowledge sharing in supporting their education. The findings are essential for several stakeholders, such as university policymakers, lecturers, and the students, to provide a deeper understanding of knowledge sharing at the university education level. The findings may encourage policymakers at the university and the classroom levels to organize activities that promote knowledge sharing such as seminars, symposiums, or knowledge sharing exercises during the classroom hours to raise the students’ knowledge sharing behavior and enhance education. The results of this study should be useful to policy makers at the university level and the classroom level as there is a positive attitude in disseminating knowledge in the higher educational setting.

        An Offline Electronic Payment System Based on an Untraceable Blind Signature Scheme

        This paper proposes a new offline electronic payment (e-payment) system that satisfies the major security requirements of e-payment, i.e. anonymity, unlinkability, unforgeability, double spending control, conditional traceability, and fraud prevention. The central idea is the use of Hwang et al.`s RSA-based untraceable blind signature (BS), which disables the link between the e-coin and its owner and ensures the anonymity of both the customer and the merchant. It attaches an expiration, a deposit and the transaction dates to each e-coin in order to manage the database of the bank effectively, to correctly calculate the interest on the e-coin and to aid arbitration if a dishonest customer attempts to double-spend the coin. It also ensures the anonymity of the customer as long as the coin is spent legitimately. Only when a fraudulent e-coin transaction is detected can the bank, with the help of the central authority (a trusted entity), determine the identity of the dishonest customer. The system is referred to as offline since the bank does not need to be concurrently involved in transactions between a customer and a merchant. Finally, analyses of the performance of the prototype and the primary security requirements of the proposed system are also presented.
