Purpose: To improve the quality of the statistical analysis of papers published in the Journal of the Korean Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (JKOSTRO) by evaluating commonly encountered errors. Materials and Methods: Papers published in the JKOSTRO from January 2006 to December 2007 were reviewed for methodological and statistical validity using a modified version of Ahn’s checklist. A statistician reviewed individual papers and evaluated the list items in the checklist for each paper. To avoid the potential assessment error by the statistician who lacks expertise in the field of radiation oncology; the editorial board of the JKOSTRO reviewed each checklist for individual articles. A frequency analysis of the list items was performed using SAS (version 9.0, SAS Institute, NC, USA) software. Results: A total of 73 papers including 5 case reports and 68 original articles were reviewed. Inferential statistics was used in 46 papers. The most commonly adopted statistical methodology was a survival analysis (58.7%). Only 19% of papers were free of statistical errors. Errors of omission were encountered in 34 (50.0%) papers. Errors of commission were encountered in 35 (51.5%) papers. Twenty-one papers (30.9%) had both errors of omission and commission. Conclusion: A variety of statistical errors were encountered in papers published in the JKOSTRO. The current study suggests that a more thorough review of the statistical analysis is needed for manuscripts submitted in the JKOSTRO.

Haemophilus parasuis causes contagious porcine Glasser`s disease leading to severe losses in the swine industry. In this study, we established an efficient Escherichia colibased system for the expression of H. parasuis major outer-membrane protein (MOMP) that has been known as a good vaccine candidate against Glasser`s disease. Use of an E. coli-derived pelB leader sequence made it possible to produce recombinant MOMP (rMOMP) as the soluble forms without an additional refolding process. Using two different animal models, it was evaluated that the rMOMP was capable of inducing a significant immune response and providing protection against H. parasuis infection.
Hydrogen Bonding in Aromatic Alcohol-Water Clusters: A Brief Review
Ahn, Doo-Sik,Jeon, In-Sun,Jang, Sang-Hee,Park, Sung-Woo,Lee, Sung-Yul,Cheong, Won-Jo Korean Chemical Society 2003 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.24 No.6
Recent experimental and theoretical advances on the aromatic alcohol-water clusters are reviewed, focusing on the structure of the hydrogen bonding between the alcoholic OH group and the binding water molecules. The interplay of experimental observations and theoretical calculations for the elucidation of the structure is demonstrated for phenol-water, benzyl alcohol-water, substituted phenol-water, naphthol-water and tropolone -water clusters. Discussion is made on assigning the role (either proton-donating or -accepting) of the hydroxyl group by measuring the shifts of infrared frequency of the OH stretching mode in the cluster from that of bare aromatic alcohol for the experimental determination of the cluster structure.
Computational Study of Hydrogen Bonding in Phenol-acetonitrile-water Clusters
Ahn, Doo-Sik,Lee, Sung-Yul,Cheong, Won-Jo Korean Chemical Society 2004 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.25 No.8
Calculations are presented for phenol ?acetonitrile - $(water)_n$ (n = 1-3) clusters. We examine the nature of interactions in the mixed clusters by calculating and comparing the structures, relative energies and harmonic frequencies of isomers with different type of hydrogen bonding. The conformers exhibit quite different patterns in the shifts of the CN and OH stretching frequencies, depending on the type of hydrogen bonding. Cyclic hydrogen bonding among the water molecule(s), acetonitrile and phenolic OH proves very important in determining the relative stability. It is also shown that acetonitrile tends to bind to the OH group of phenol in low energy conformers.

Alumina particles wrapped in few-layer graphene sheets were prepared by calcining aluminum nitride powders under a mixed gas flow of carbon monoxide and argon. The graphene sheets were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The few-layer graphene sheets, which wrapped around the alumina particles, did not exhibit any diffraction peaks in the XRD patterns but did show three characteristic bands (D, G, and 2D bands) in the Raman spectra. The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) with the alumina particles wrapped in few-layer graphene sheets exhibited significantly improved overall energy-conversion efficiency, compared to conventional DSSC, due to longer electron lifetime.
