BACKGROUND: Chemical accidents have increased owing to chemical usage, human error and technical failures during the last decades. Many countries have organized supervisory authorities in charge of enforcing related rules and regulations to prevent chemical accidents. A very important part in chemical accidents has been coping with comprehensive first aid tool. Therefore, the present research has provided information with the initial applications concern to the rapid analysis of hazardous material using instruments in vehicle of field mode after chemical accidents. METHODS AND RESULTS: Mobile measurement vehicle was manufactured to obtain information regarding field assessments of chemical accidents. This vehicle was equipped with four instruments including gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC/MS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Ion Chromatography (IC), and UV/Vis spectrometer (UV) to analyses of accident preparedness substances, volatile compounds, and organic gases. Moreover, this work was the first examined the evaluation of applicability for analysis instruments using 20 chemicals in various accident preparedness substances (GC/MS; 6 chemicals, FT-IR; 2 chemicals, IC; 11 chemicals, and UV; 1 chemical) and their calibration curves were obtained with high linearity (r2 > 0.991). Our results were observed the advantage of the high chromatographic peak capacity, fast analysis, and good sensitivity as well as resolution. CONCLUSION: When chemical accidents are occurred, the posted measurement vehicle may be utilized as tool an effective for qualitative and quantitative information in the scene of an accident owing to the rapid analysis of hazardous material.

Gas phase chemicals by chemical accident and terror have volatile and reactive characteristics which affect on human health and ecosystem, so it is important to detect and identify the chemicals immediately as soon as possible. Recently a variety of detection methods have been reported including indicator, sensor, spectrophotometer, chromatography, analyzer etc. but it is difficult to find proper detection methods because they have some limitations to detect unstable toxic gas phase chemicals considering selectivity and sensitivity. As it is needed to find out unknown chemicals released to the environment by chemical accident or terror, we would like to propose the rapid and effective detection method for the identification of hazardous chemicals in the gas phase. In this study we introduced detection methods using metal porphyrin complexes. Metal porphyrin complex are prepared on the reverse phase silicagel plate and exposed to gas phase chemicals. Color change was observed in the metal porphyrin complex exposed to acrylic acid, hydrochloric acid, in addition RGB(Red Green Blue) value was calculated to confirm the difference of color change. These results might be caused from the activity of chemicals used in the exposure experiment and could be useful to develop the method for the detection of gas phase chemicals difficult to detect with previously reported methods.

BACKGROUND: The analysis for the concentration and enantiomeric ratio of OCPs have been performed to confirm the distribution and to emonstrate the pollution characteristics of chiral OCPs in ambient air. METHODS AND RESULTS: In ambient air at coastal and inland sites, concentrations and enantiomer fractions (EFs) of heptachlor (HEPT), eptachlor epoxide (HEPX), trans-chlordane (TC), cis-chlordane (CC), xychlordane (OXY), 2,4`-DDT, 2,4`-DDD with HRGC/HRMS were investigated to understand source and distribution of chiral organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in ambient air. The mean concentrations of OCPs in ambient air were at the range of 0.027(heptachlor)∼1.279 (4,4`-DDT) pg/m3 and 0.0005 (heptachlor)∼0.1043 ng/g d.w. (TC), respectively, The mean EFs of OCPs in ambient air were at the range of 0.73 (HEPX)∼0.45 (CC). Both preferential depletions of (+) and (-) enantiomer were observed for CC, indicated by EFs either <0.5 or >0.5, while preferential depletions of (-) enantiomer which mean EFs <0.5 were observed for chiral OCPs except TC and MC-5. CONCLUSION: OCPs in ambient air have been distributed from soil, but some of them such as chlordane, DDT etc. might have been introduced by long-range atmospheric transport, considering EFs by chiral analysis and trajectory analysis.
