Estimating the Validity of CPTED Guidelines on Residence Hall in University
한동호,박창배 대한건축학회 2015 Architectural research Vol.17 No.4
University residence halls have become one of the most important issues for students when selecting their academic institutions. However, in South Korea, while universities maintain technologically up-to-date facilities, when it comes to safety or security, the management is unsatisfactory. As a result, the number of violent crime has been increasing. However, there are few researches in terms of practical validity of CPTED Guidelines even though a myriad of researchers study about CPTED Guidelines. Therefore, this study endeavours to investigate the validity of theoretical CPTED Guidelines that to what extent it might be adopted for design process. As a methodology, Space Syntax Convex map and Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA) are chosen. As a result, since the types of space which have a high level of Space Syntax Index are analogous with space treated on CPTED Guidelines, it roughly shows that the theoretical CPTED Guidelines could be adopted in practical architectural design process. Furthermore, it reveals that there is a close relationship between detail design guide stated in CPTED Guidelines and the result of VGA. That is, through the analysis, it is proved that the validity of CPTED Guidelines is quite enough to be adopted in practical design process.
Making Engagement Effective: The Politics of North Korean Human Rights in a Humanitarian Context
한동호 통일연구원 2017 International journal of korean unification studie Vol.26 No.1
This article deals with the issue of North Korean human rights in a humanitarian context. Humanitarianism can be defined as the activities and/or policies by which the purpose of rescuing the vulnerable in a society could be achieved. It is argued that by both reinforcing a humanitarian discourse and establishing a humanitarian principle, South Korea’s engagement toward the DPRK as a primary and smart strategy could be more effective, thereby realizing a “true” sense of improvement in North Koreans’ human rights. In conclusion, this article summarizes the main findings of the research and suggests a few policy implications for policymakers.
Scenario Construction and Its Implications for International Relations Research
한동호 한국국제정치학회 2011 The Korean Journal of International Studies Vol.9 No.1
This article intends to introduce scenario methodology into the field of international relations (IR) in a systematic way. After clarifying what scenario methodology is and how it is presented, it argues that the scenario methodology is one of the most effective methods to connect theory to practice, thereby leading to a better understanding of future world events. This argument is based on exploring the implications of scenario method in the field of IR with regard to three issue areas – an eclectic approach to world politics, the issue of prediction in the social sciences and scenario analysis as a solution for that, and the connection between theory and practice. Overall, scenario methodology urges policy makers to make a decision on the pragmatic and problem-solving basis in a real world of policy making.
