Epsilon Hard Ferrite Nanopowders for Millimeter Wave Absorption Application

Ferrites with excellent electrical and magnetic properties have widely used in various applications such as electronic inductors, magnetic recording tapes and microwave absorber. Among the ferrite family, epsilon iron oxide (ε-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>) has a giant coercive field (> 20 kOe) at room temperature, resulting in spectroscopic absorption in high frequency electromagnetic (EM) waves (30~300 GHz). However, it is difficult to synthesize high purity of ε-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> for scale up via previous methods such as pulsed laser deposition and reverse-micelle & sol-gel method. Herein, we develop a facile aerosol approach to synthesize high purity ε-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> nanopowder. The substitution of nonmagnetic elements to ε-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> can be an effective method to tune coercivity, leading to the control of frequencies of EM waves to absorb. This strategy would pave the way for the mass production of millimeterwave absorber composed of ε-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>.
전자파 제어소재로 활용을 위한 코어셸 α-Fe@SiO<sub>2</sub> 나노라드 입자 제조

전자파 차폐/흡수 소재로 활발하게 사용되고 있는 철 나노 입자는 일정 주파수 이상의 범위에서 투자율 감소로 인하여 전자파 제어 성능이 감소되는 문제가 있다. 그러나 이때 철의 형상을 이방화하면 투자율이 유지되는 주파수 구간이 증가되는 장점이 있어 이에 관한 연구가 세계적으로 진행되고 있다. 그러나 철은 등방성 결정구조를 가지고 있어 일축 성장 자체가 불가능하여 제조가 어려운 문제가 있으므로 신규 합성 전략이 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 실리카 박막이 코팅된 산화철 나노라드를 제조하여 수소 환원하는 전략을 기반으로 셸 안의 철 입자 형상을 다양하게 조절하여 자기적특성의 변화를 관찰 및 조정하였다. 셸 안의 철 입자 형상은 환원 시 공정 변수(반응 온도, 수소 유량, 승온 속도 등)에 따라 나노입자에서 라드 형상까지 조정이 가능하였다.
Mesenchymal stem cell therapy of systemic lupus erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a sutoimmune disease and the pathogenesis involves the emergence of autoreactive T and B lymphocytes, production of autoantibodies, formation and deposition of immune complexes in various tissues leading to inflammation in many organs. Recently, growing evidence suggests that mesenchymal stem cells can offer an effective therapy for the SLE patients, resulting in disease clinical remission and improvement of organ dysfunction. In this review, we provide a brief overview of current status of MSC therapy for the treatment of SLE and underlying mechanisms.
Synthesis of Gigantic Coercivity M-type Hexaferrites

Ferrites with excellent electrical and magnetic properties have widely used in industrial applications such as permanent magnets, microwave absorbers and magnetic memory media due to their low price and chemical stability. Among them, M-type hexaferrites (MFe<sub>12</sub>O<sub>19</sub>, M=Sr, Pb, Ba) with magnetoplumbite are known to have a high saturation magnetization of 70 emu/g and low coercive field (<sup>3+</sup> ions with other suitable ions, such as Al<sup>3+</sup>, Cr<sup>3+</sup>, Ga<sup>3+</sup>, and replacing Sr<sup>2+</sup>ions with Ca<sup>2+</sup> ions. Especially, M-type hexagonal ferrite substituted Al3+ ions for octahedral Fe3+ sites has very large coercivities, leading to lattice contraction of the unit cell. In this study, we synthesized hexaferrite particles (Sr<sub>(1-x/12)</sub>Ca<sub>(x/12)</sub>Fe<sub>12-x</sub>Al<sub>x</sub>O<sub>19</sub>(x=4-6) with a coercivity over 20kOe via spray drying process. Thus, Sr-hexaferrite substituted with Al-Ca would be a good alternative for electromagnetic wave absorbers.
Adoptive Cell Therapy of Melanoma with Cytokine-induced Killer Cells

Melanoma is the most aggressive skin cancer and its incidence is gradually increasing worldwide. Patients with metastatic melanoma have a very poor prognosis (estimated 5-year survival rate of <16%). In the last few years, several drugs have been approved for malignant melanoma, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors and immune checkpoint blockades. Although new therapeutic agents have improved progression- free and overall survival, their use is limited by drug resistance and drug-related toxicity. At the same time, adoptive cell therapy of metastatic melanoma with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes has shown promising results in preclinical and clinical studies. In this review, we summarize the currently available drugs for treatment of malignant melanoma. In addition, we suggest cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells as another candidate approach for adoptive cell therapy of melanoma. Our preclinical study and several previous studies have shown that CIK cells have potent anti-tumor activity against melanomas in vitro and in an in vivo human tumor xenograft model without any toxicity.
