A new HPLC method for the analysis of cyanobacterial toxins, i.e. microcystin was developed using cyano-type prepacked cartridge while the conventional method was to utilize ODS cartridge. The cartridge was washed with 0.5 M acetic acid, then microcystins RR and LR were eluted from the cartridge with 30% acetonitrile. A better degree of quantitation was observed than with a ODS cartridge. Especially, in the case of microcystin LR a great difference in peak area was observed.
Sentiment Shock and Housing Prices: Evidence from Korea

This study examines the impact of sentiment shock, which is defined as a stochastic innovation to the Housing Market Confidence Index (HMCI) that is orthogonal to past housing price changes, on aggregate housing price changes and housing price volatility. This paper documents empirical evidence that sentiment shock has a statistically significant relationship with Korea’s aggregate housing price changes. Specifically, the key findings show that an increase in sentiment shock predicts a rise in the aggregate housing price and a drop in its volatility at the national level. For the Seoul Metropolitan Region (SMR), this study also suggests that sentiment shock is positively associated with one-month-ahead aggregate housing price changes, whereas an increase in sentiment volatility tends to increase housing price volatility as well. In addition, the out-of-sample forecasting exercises conducted here reveal that the prediction model endowed with sentiment shock and sentiment volatility outperforms other competing prediction models.

It is very difficult to analyze microcystins quantitatively in shellfish, since microcystins in shellfish easily combine with other proteins. Therefore, in this study, we produced 2-methyl-3-methoxy-4-phenylbutyric acid (MMPB) by separating Adda, the most characteristic part of microcystins, from the complexes of proteins and microcystins. MMPB was esterified and used for the quantitative analysis of microcystins in shellfish using GC.
Do Animal-Spirits Matter for Fundamentals? U.S. Firm-Level Evidence

This paper studies the impact of the animal-spirit (non-fundamental) shock on the future fundamentals of firms. The empirical investigation on U.S. firms demonstrates that the animal-spirit shock has persistent impacts on firm profitability and investments. Furthermore, it also suggests that the magnitude of the impacts depends on the firm type; it is shown to be more pronounced in technology-oriented firms.
Cryptocurrency Market Efficiency: A Test of Korean Markets

In this paper, we provide empirical evidence that supports the existence of serious imbalances in the recent cryptocurrency prices in Korea. From the standpoint of equilibrium, the prices of three major cryptocurrencies (i.e., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple) in Korea are not compatible with the law of one price (LOP) even after controlling for risk arising from cross-border arbitrage attempts. This implies high volatility-a distinct feature of the cryptocurrency marketis not a crucial factor that deters cross-border arbitrage. We conjecture robust demand on cryptocurrencies coupled with various structural market frictions and the limited supply may have supported the persistent deviation from the equilibrium level of cryptocurrency price. We also identify the equilibrium gap contains a unit root in its dynamic process, which suggests policy measures aiming to extenuate excessive demands on cryptocurrencies will have a stabilizing effect on cryptocurrency prices persistently. At the same time, any positive shock on investors’ preferences on cryptocurrencies can also offset the effectiveness of policies, which makes the current situation very complicated.

남조류 독소인 마이크로시스틴은 여름철 우리나라 여러 호수들에 존재하여 물고기와 가축 그리고인간에게 강한 독성을 나타내는 독소이다. 지금까지는 남조류독소인 마이크로시스틴을 분석하기 위하여HPLC를 사용하거나 ELISA 분석법을 이용하였으나 본 연구에서는 대량배양을 통해서 얻어진 남조류들 속에 미량존재하는 마이크로시스틴을 분석하기 위해 스트립을 이용하는 새로운 분석방법을 시도하였다. 이분석법은 항원-항체기술을 이용하여 높은 특이도(specifisity)와 테스트 스트립(test strip)의 신속성, 그리고, 형광리더(reader)의 고감도(sensitivity) 분석능력 등의 장점을 이용하였다. 따라서 새로 개발된 분석법을 이용하면 다양한 물시료속에 존재하는 마이크로시스틴을 독소 표준품 없이 단시간에 고감도로 분석할 수 있다.
Selective Data Reduction in Gas Chromatography/Infrared Spectrometry

As gas chromatography/infrared spectrometry (GC/IR) becomes routinely avaliable, methods must be developed to deal with the large amount of data produced. We demonstrate computer methods that quickly search through a large data file, locating thos e spectra that display a spectral feature of interest. Based on a modified library search routine, these selective data reduction methods retrieve all or nearly all of the compounds of interest, while rejecting the vast majority of unrelated compounds. To overcome the shifting problem of IR spectra, a search method of moving the average pattern was designed. In this moving pattern search, the average pattern of a particular functional group was not held stationary, but was allowed to be moved a little bit right and left.
화학적 산화제를 이용한 남조류 독소, 마이크로시스틴 LR의 분해연구

Cyanobacterial toxins, microcystins which exist in korean lakes show strong toxicity to fish, cattles and human. In this study, we tried to degrade microcystin LR using various chemical oxidants, Chlorine, Potassium permanganate and Hydrogen Peroxide. The detection method for the concentrations of microcystin LR in water samples was Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method using the monoclonal antibody of microcystin. Chlorine degraded microcystin LR effectively at the concentration of 800 pg/mL microcystin LR and 12 ppm chlorine. The reaction took 40 minutes at pH 7. Potassium Permanganate also degraded microcystin LR successfully at the concentration of 2000 pg/mL microcystin LR and 1.2 ppm chlorine. The degradation reaction took 60 minutes at pH 7. In the case of hydrogen peroxide, the degradation rate of microcystin LR was very slow because of the slow reaction rate.
