Dermal wound healing is a complex process that involved inflammation leading to re-epithelialization, granulation tissue, and tissue remodeling. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that polysaccharides isolated from fungus, Phellinus gilvus (PG) have various anti-inflammatory activities. In present study, we have assessed the effect of polysaccharides from PG on the dermal wound healing of polysaccharides from PG in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model. Six of 6-mm circular wounds were created with biopsy punch on the 4th day after induction of diabetes. After 24 hours, each test substance was applied to the wound twice a day for next 5 days. Circular wounds treated with PG showed significantly reduced wound contraction and complete reepithelialization, as compared to wounds of non-treated (p < 0.05). These results show that polysaccharides isolated from PG enhanced wound repair in diabetic impaired healing, and could be developed as a wound healing agent in such clinical settings.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect the interferential current (IFC) stimulation level according to autonomic nerve system (ANS) of healthy adults. IFC measured with adhesive 2-pole electrodes pad on T1∼T4 spinal cord segment level that electrode stimulation of 20 min after. A total of 45 healthy adults participated in the study, who were randomly divided into three groups: 15 of sensory level stimulus group (100 bps, 10∼12 ㎃), 15 of exercise level stimulus group (5 bps, 45∼50 ㎃), 15 of noxious level stimulus group (100 bps, 80∼90 ㎃). Measured items were sympathetic activity and parasympathetic activity. In order to identify the changes in measurement variables before electrode stimulation and after and 30 min stimulation. The comparison of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity in each group revealed that they was changes of after vs 30 min in after electrical stimulation time(p<.05).

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and is led to physical disability. Yet the development of effective disease-modifying treatments has lagged. In this study, I examined the effect of physical therapeutic intervention through microcurrent stimulation and attempt to find which degree of intensity, either 25 ㎂ or 500 ㎂ with a regular 5 pps pulse, is more effective in the osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis was induced with a mixture of 2% carrageenan and 2% kaolin in 26 male Sprague-Dawley rats. The mixture(0.1 ㎖) was injected into the intra-articular capsule of knee joint once a week for three weeks. Five animals did not show degenerative changes by radiological findings and excluded in the following experiment. Osteoarthritic animals were randomly divided into 3 groups(n1, n2, n3=7/each): untreated, treated with 25 ㎂, treated with 500 ㎂. All experimental groups received microcurrent stimulation for four weeks (15 min/day, 5 days/week). The ethological inspection of foot print analysis on the walking corridor was accomplished every week. Histological preparations and immunohistochemical staining with insulin-like growth factor-1 were also done in the articular cartilages. All of these parameters were compared with those of osteoarthritic control group (n=7). The ethological inspection of foot print analysis revealed that changes of walking track (paw width) and stride length was significantly increased in both experimental groups. The better results were observed in experimental group treated with 25 ㎂ intensity without significance than group treated with 500 ㎂. Histological preparations disclosed that routine hyaline cartilage of articular surface were altered to fibrous cartilage in untreated group and experimental group treated with 500 ㎂ intensity. But a little changes were seen in experimental group treated with 25 ㎂ intensity. Immunolocalization of insulin-like growth factor-1 was simultaneously decreased according to the duration of osteoarthritis, and did not show significant difference among the groups. In this study discovered that the microcurrent stimulation, especially 25 ㎂ intensity, had a positive effect by the ethological inspection, histological and immunohistochemical stainings. These results suggest that microcurrent stimulation with low-intensity might be effective in the promotion of healing process for the osteoarthritis.
