Effects of muscle fluid concentrates from Styela clava on fish diets were investigated in rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish were fed on one of the isonitrogenous(48%) and isolipic(20%) feed containing 5 to 20% of muscle fluid concentrates for 8 weeks. Hematological parameters such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, albumin, glucose, total bililubin, triglyceride and glutamic pyruvate transaminase of the rainbow trout which were fed on the diets varied, but no specific trend became apparent. However, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase value was significantly higher than that of normal fishes. Therefore, concentrated ascidian fluid which is normally discarded, can be combined with commercial diets for the normal growth of rainbow trout.

This study investigated some enzymatic properties and bitterness improvement of an aminopeptidase retentate fraction (ARF) from common squid Todarodes pacificus hepatopancreas extract (HPE), obtained by ultrafiltration with a 10 kDa molecular weight cut off membrane. Endoprotease and aminopeptidase (AP) activity, and the purity of the ARF (>10 kDa) increased by 6.69-18.11 U/mg and 1.5-2.6 fold, respectively, compared to HPE (2.63-9.37 U/mg). The AP activity toward LeuPNA was stable at 20-55°C and pH 5-9, but decreased slightly with increasing concentration of NaCl in the reaction mixture. The ARF was the most active MetPNA and preferentially hydrolyzed Glu, Leu and AlaPNA. The bitterness tryptic casein hydrolysates (BTCHs) were treated with ARF, and the bitterness of ARF-BTCHs significantly decreased with increasing amounts of released amino acids Ala, Val, Met, Ile and Leu, which show strong correlations with bitterness. Therefore, the ARF of T. pacificus HPE obtained by ultrafiltration may have a considerable potential for application in protein hydrolysis and appears to be ideally suited to the purpose of lowing bitterness in protein hydrolysates.

Several our studies have focused recently on the mass production of the freshwater Cladoceran Moina macrocopa which can substitute Artemia nauplii for the culture of larval marin fish. A 6 weeks experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of enrichment on the fatty acid composition of Moina macrocopa through feeding Schizo-chytrium sp. containing highly unsaturated fatty acids and to study the impacts of n-3-HUFA enriched Moina on improving survival rate and fatty acid compostion of larval rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. After feeding for 6 weeks, the Moina-fed fry resulted in a higher survival rate of 99.2% compared to the Artemia-fed fry 12.8%. In addition, the Moina-fed fry had the fast growth rate 45.6mm compare to the Artemia-fed fry 25.7 mm at the end of the experiment. The Moina-fed fry showed significantly higher level of 16.47% DHA than their Artemia-fed fry counterparts of the level of 3.97% with respect to DHA. PL, the cell membrane components in living food organisms, constituted 63.8% of the Moina, which was significantly higher than in the 40.1% of the Artemia. The present study indicate that Moina macrocopa can be used as Artemia substitute and improving the survival rate rockfish larvae through enchriment Schizochytrium sp.

Approximately 80% of the world’s sea cucumbers Apostichopus japonicas are processed into dried sea cucumbers. The hot air-drying method is currently used in industry, but it has many problems, such as a short drying time, severe browning, high nutrition loss, and low recovery. In this study, the moisture absorption rate, dry recovery rate, and lipid nutrient composition of sea cucumber dried by heat pump decompression and with a hybrid dryer were investigated. The moisture absorption rates for hybrid-dried sea cucumbers at 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h were 241.3%, 427.7%, 652.0%, 721.0%, and 742.2%, respectively. The moisture absorption rates for hot air-dried sea cucumbers were 155.8%, 240.0%, 390.3%, 655.5%, and 667.4%, respectively. Thus, moisture absorption was faster and greater with hybrid drying than with hot air drying. The dry recovery rate at 24 h was greater for hybrid-dried sea cucumber (70.7%) than for hot air-dried sea cucumber (59.8%). Saturated fatty acid contents of the hybrid- and hot air-dried sea cucumbers were 30.0% and 37.5%, respectively. Moreover, greater Σn-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid content was found in hybrid-dried sea cucumber (15.8%) than in hot air-dried sea cucumber (11.7%).
