Validity of Using the Photo-cathode Gun for a Compact X-ray Free-electron Laser

X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) machines under construction are all too huge. It is highly desirable to find how to build a compact XFEL with lower energy and smaller size, but comparable radiation quality. For this purpose, an improved electron gun with a low emittance is needed. This paper discusses some of the currently used photo-cathode guns already good enough to realize a compact XFEL.
RNA Interference-Mediated Simultaneous Silencing of Four Genes Using Cross-Shaped RNA

The structural flexibility of RNA interference (RNAi)-trig-gering nucleic acids suggests that the design of uncon-ventional RNAi trigger structures with novel features is possible. Here, we report a cross-shaped RNA duplex structure, termed quadruple interfering RNA (qiRNA), with multiple target gene silencing activity. qiRNA trig-gers the simultaneous down-regulation of four cellular target genes via an RNAi mechanism. In addition, qiRNA shows enhanced intracellular delivery and target gene silencing over conventional siRNA when complexed with jetPEI, a linear polyethyleneimine (PEI). We also show that the long antisense strand of qiRNA is incorporated intact into an RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). This novel RNA scaffold further expands the repertoire of RNAi-triggering molecular structures and could be used in the development of therapeutics for various diseases including viral infections and cancer.

The travel time among demand points is changed not only distance but traffic conditions. The existing inventory routing problem (IRP) cannot give practical solutions by assuming average speed. Therefore this study defines IRP reflecting dynamicity in transport network as mathematical model for the time dependent inventory routing problem (TDIRP) and proposes the genetic algorithm that gives retailer’s optimal replenishment policy minimizing supplier’s the total average cost. Finally, the proposed genetic algorithm’s performance is tested and analyzed on various experiments from the viewpoint of solution quality and computational time to prove the proposed genetic algorithm’s excellence.
Design and Physics Issues of the PAL-XFEL

The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) is going to build a 4th generation light source, an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) based on self-amplified spontaneous emission. For the purpose, the existing 2.5-GeV linear accelerator will be upgraded to 3.7 GeV and will include new features such as photo-cathode electron gun and bunch compressors. The other important parts of the PALXFEL are the long undulator and photon beamlines. In this paper, the design philosophy and the details of the PAL-XFEL will be presented along with the key physics issues.8消
Differential Expressions of Matrix Metalloproteinase-13 in Sound and Carious Dentin

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes involved in degradation of the extracellular matrix.In a previous study, MMP-13 was found to be expressed in pulp implying its involvement in the pathogenesis of dental caries. Two extracted teeth were used. A sound tooth and a tooth with wide range of dental caries were used. Two sections were obtained each from isolated crown and root. Immunofluorescence of the FITC of the MMP-13 in coronal and radicular dentin was analyzed by confocal microscopy. Immunofluorescence signals that were indicative of MMP-13 were observed in coronal dentin of sound teeth and in carious teeth with a wide range of caries. Marked immunofluorescent reaction was observed in the border line of caries infected and affected coronal dentin. MMP-13 expression was not detected in the root dentin. The expressions of MMP-13 in carious dentin imply the roles of MMP-13 in caries progression.
