왜 영화인가? 영어교육강화 방안에 대한 재고: 굿 윌 헌팅을 중심으로
이연준,이자원 영상영어교육학회 2012 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.13 No.3
This paper deals with a suggestion for non-native English teachers to teach communicative language classes with the help of movie-materials. It also describes the theoretical foundations necessary to use movies in the foreign language classroom. According to Sinclair (1991), language is defined as a combination of creativity plus prefabricated chunks. Therefore, learning prefabricated chunks is theoretically justified in order to enhance language development. Lamb (1998) also argues that there are many scholars of language learning who ignore the human’s cognitive ability to memorize, implying that memorizing prefabricated chunks is an effective way to learn an L2. Speaking of the process of language acquisition, Ellis (2003) reports that syntactic systematicity is the result of strengthening associations between language function and language form. The associations are immediately processed through prefabricated chunks, he argues. In this respect, memorization of prefabricated chunks and language development are closely related. Considering teaching such chunks, there is no reason that non-native teachers should be ignored in the L2 classroom. This paper makes suggestions about how to manage L2 classrooms using movie-materials. The movie Good Will Hunting has been used because it has many touching and impressive dialogues. The roles of teachers, students and the movie-materials are described in detail. This paper shows conclusively that non-native teachers are perfectly able to improve students’ communicative abilities.

The purpose of this paper is to emphasize that graded readers, such as Anne of Green Gables, are worth being chosen as college-level study material. Even though they are simplified versions linguistically, graded books are useful for learning multi-word units (MWUs) and in learning cultural values. To show this, a 3 stage experiment was conducted with 3 non-English major college students and the text app-Anne of Green Gables. In the first stage, the participants had a form recall test to enhance their awareness of MWUs. In the second stage, they had a written test about the contents of the book and had to answer questions with MWUs. In the third stage, the participants had another written test about American culture through MWUs. After the experiment, all the participants were interviewed with questions about the tests. They responded that they could deal with the first test without difficulty though two of them failed to get good grades. However, they confessed that they could not handle the second and third tests without their teacher’s help. The results indicate that graded readers are just right for learning MWUs and are cognitively acceptable as sources of content for discussing non-language topics such as culture. .

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common type of oral cancer, and it has been steadily increasing in worldwide. Pituitary tumor transforming gene 1 (PTTG1) has been known as oncogene in a verity of cancers. Nevertheless, the expression and role of PTTG1 in OSCC progression remains largely unexplored. In this study, clinical datasets were analyzed to assess the genetic impact of PTTG1 on OSCC progression and to identify its functional roles in OSCC cell lines. We analyzed the expression of PTTG1 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) and OSCC using databases form the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). To investigate the effect of PTTG1 on proliferation and migration abilities in OSCC cell lines, following the knockdown of PTTG1 in HSC-2 and SCC-9 cell lines, we analyzed the proliferation and metastatic abilities of OSCC cells using EdU and Boyden chamber assays. Our database analysis revealed that PTTG1 was significantly overexpressed in tumor tissues compared to normal tissues. Moreover, its expression correlated with clinical parameters of OSCC. In vitro experiments demonstrated that depletion of PTTG1 suppressed the ability of cell proliferation and migration in both HSC-2 and SCC-9 cell lines. In conclusion, our study suggests that PTTG1 may act as an oncogene in OSCC. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms and clinical implications of PTTG1 expression in OSCC patients.
영화영어와 Exemplar-Based Learning : 영화 푸시를 중심으로

The purpose of this paper is three-fold: 1) to suggest a way to effectively teach movie expressions in the EFL classroom; 2) to explain why movie expressions should be taught; and 3) to show how to select the expressions. Two concepts were imported: exemplar-based sequences and the idea of a speech community. In usage-based linguistics, actual expressions (exemplars) are a starting point for language acquisition. Such expressions should be used in a speech community. In this paper, a movie was regarded as a type of speech community. The American superhero film, Push (McGuigan, 2009), was selected. This paper shows how EFL teachers can conceive of Push as a speech community. All members of the Push community had psychic abilities. Expressions were grouped according to these psychic aspects. This process is believed to create a community of psychics. After the grouping activities were done, each expression serves as a reminder of the psychic world. This paper also shows that language development can take place when EFL students learn grouped expressions. According to exemplar-based sequences, language development can move from actual expressions or exemplars to the abstract schema. We believe that EFL teachers can teach movie expressions systematically and coherently with the help of exemplar-based learning and the idea of a speech community.
미디어 리터러시(Media Literacy)를 활용한 영화영어 수업 방안에 관한 연구
이연준 영상영어교육학회 2019 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.20 No.1
The purpose of the paper is to suggest a way to get college students to become active in screen English classes. In order to do this, the concept of media literacy (Hobbs & Jensen, 2009; Lee, 2018) has been borrowed. Two Marvel movies, Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Russo & Russo, 2014) were used. Four college level students participated in the experiment. The teacher asked five questions about the movies, and provided movie clips to help the participants answer the questions. After the lessons, the participants were interviewed. The results showed three positive findings. The first is that media literacy involves asking questions which stimulate curiosity about the content. The second is that media literacy has a focus on contents or the subject, not on language items. Because students are digital natives, they will develop and create stories with the use of digital technology. This will result in students’ active engagement in screen English classes. The third is that the teacher should combine student curiosity about the subject with relevant English language learning. Current students prefer to create a new world through English not to learn English through subjects or contents. The consequences of this will be discussed. .

Procymidone (PCM), an agricultural fungicide, is attracting attention because it has been detected in all ecosystems, including aquatic environments. This study explored changes in the behavior and toxicity of PCM in water under the influence of photolysis and microplastics (MPs) coexistence. Hydrolysis of PCM was evaluated and UV-A and UV-C lamps were used as light sources for the photodegradation experiments. The Microtox® assay was used to evaluate changes in toxicity during the photodegradation and after sorption on MPs of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films. The appearance of 3,5-dichloroaniline (DCA), a major metabolite of PCM that is more toxic than its parent compound in water, was confirmed. Both PCM and DCA showed sufficient molar extinction coefficients to be photolyzed under UV-C irradiation (εPCM=10,300 M−1 cm−1 and εDCA=2,400 M−1 cm−1); however, the presence of natural organic matter negatively affected their photodegradation. PVC showed a better sorption potential for PCM and DCA than for LDPE. The higher sorption by PVC significantly reduced the toxic effect of DCA from an average value of 79% to 60% and increased the EC50 value from 30.4% to 47.6%. These results offer insights into controlling toxic micropollutants, including fungicides, in aquatic environments and water treatment processes.
